In both conventional and organic Italian vineyards, it is quite common to have areas characterized by problems in vine health, grape production and quality, often caused by improper land preparation before vine plantation and/or management. Causes for soil malfunctioning can include: reduced contribution of the soil fauna to the ecosystem services (i.e. nutrient cycles), poor organic matter content, imbalance of some element ratio, altered pH, water deficiency, soil compaction and/or scarce oxygenation. Si è concluso a fine giugno il Progetto europeo ReSolVe, che ha: - selezionato 19 vigneti biologici in Italia, Francia, Spagna, Slovenia e Turchia; - individuato per ciascun vigneto le aree con una ridotta crescita della vite, bassa resistenza alle malattie e/o scarsa produzione di uva; - testato per 3 anni in modo interdisciplinare gli effetti della concimazione con compost, sovescio e pacciamatura secca con leguminose; -evidenziato vantaggi, criticità e alcuni suggerimenti pratici nell’adozione di ciascuna strategia.

Effect of organic treatments on soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics in vineyard Organic Eprints

The work aims to investigate the effects of different soil management strategies on carbon sequestration and total nitrogen in areas of vineyards suffering from loss of soil functionality. Treatments, selected for inter-row management, to re-install soil functionality were based on compost or other organic amendments (COMP), green manure (GM), and dry mulching (DM) strategies using winter legumes and cereals. Cover crops were seeded in fall and mown in late spring, leaved in the ground for mulching in DM or incorporated into the uppermost soil layers in GM. Such approaches were investigated in six vineyards in Italy, six in France, and two vineyards in Slovenia and Turkey. Improper or excessive land preparation methods in vineyards before planting can have a considerable impact on soil functionality. They include excessive levelling and deep ploughing leading to disturbances of the natural contour of slopes and destruction, truncation and burial of soil horizons. Manipulations may significantly modify chemical, physical, biological and hydrological balance of soils. This multidisciplinary research work evaluated the effects of soil erosion on grape yield and quality and on different soil functions, namely water and nutrient supply, carbon sequestration, organic matter recycling, and soil biodiversity, with the aim to understand the causes of soil malfunctioning and work out a proper strategy of soil remediation. Quantitative and qualitative analyses among the soil microarthropods can be used in biomonitoring as tools in multi-disciplinary approach to characterize soil quality. Three groups of microarthropods - Collembola and Oribatida as detrivores and Gamasina as predators - were selected to evaluate the impact of different management treatments adopted to recover degraded soil in organic. Differences in arthropod populations between French and Italian sites were registered. In Italy, after two years of recovering treatments, an increase of the abundances of all groups, particularly detritivores in degraded plots, was observed. Restoring soil functionality in degraded areas within vineyards by organic treatments: the experimental layout of the RESOLVE Core-organic+ project Organic Eprints

Degraded areas are frequent in vineyards, even if managed by organic farming, mainly caused by soil truncation, soil erosion, or salts enrichment. Recovering strategies implemented in 19 degraded vineyards in 5 countries within the RESOLVE project concerned: (i) composted organic amendments, or seeding of cover crops (including legumes) for (ii) green manure or (iii) dry mulch. The relationships between vineyard management and pedo-climatic conditions are useful to better understand other contributions dealing with RESOLVE project reported in the present special issue.
