A nutrient density standard for vegetables and fruits: nutrients per calorie and nutrients per unit cost Inra

Objectives: The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005 recommended that consumers give priority to nutrient dense foods, those that contain substantial amounts of key nutrients in relation to the dietary energy they provide. This study developed a scoring system to estimate the nutritional adequacy of vegetables and fruits, on a per weight, per calorie, and per unit cost basis. Data: we used a French national food composition database for 637 foods, including 129 vegetables and fruits. Mean national retail prices were obtained for each food. OBJECTIVE: Nutritious yet inexpensive foods do exist. However, many such foods are rejected by the low-income consumer. Is it because their use violates unspoken social norms? The present study was designed to assess the variety and cost of the lowest-cost market basket of foods that simultaneously met required dietary standards and progressively stricter consumption constraints. DESIGN: A mathematical optimisation model was used to develop the lowest-cost food plans to meet three levels of nutritional requirements and seven levels of consumption constraints. En 2001, environ 56 000 adultes étaient considérés en situation d’insécurité alimentaire dans le Comté de Sacramento. Malgré les six programmes d’aide alimentaire administrés par le gouvernement américain, le nombre de personnes ayant recours à des structures d’aide alimentaire d’urgence n’a cessé de croître durant les 20 dernières années. Notre étude a pour objectif de connaître les personnes ayant recours à l’aide alimentaire d’urgence et d’évaluer l’utilisation des programmes gouvernementaux au sein du Comté. Identification of nutritionally adequate mixtures of vegetable oils by linear programming Inra

Objective: To determine the types and proportions of vegetable oils to recommend for a healthy diet. Methods: Optimal vegetable oil combinations were designed, using linear programming and, as decision variables, nine single oils and 29 basic food items. ‘Oil models’ were run to determine whether reasonable amounts of individuals oils or oil mixtures satisfied a set of constraints on essential fatty acids and vitamin E. ‘Meal models’ were run to test whether selected mixtures could be used as the sole source of added fat in a meal that met micronutrient and macronutrient recommendations.Results: The cheapest mixture (0.97 € L-1) that solved the oil models contained 81% rapeseed and 19% sunflower oils. L'insécurité alimentaire pour raisons financières en France Inra

A partir de l’enquête nationale INCA 2 (Individuelle nationale sur les consommations alimentaires), cette étude indique que 12% des adultes vivent en France dans un foyer en situation d’insécurité alimentaire pour raisons financières et représentent un groupe distinct des personnes en situation de pauvreté monétaire. Ces personnes sont plus jeunes que les autres et en majorité des femmes. Malgré un revenu supérieur en moyenne au seuil de pauvreté, elles semblent devoir plus souvent faire face seules à des dépenses hors alimentation élevées, notamment pour le logement, mais aussi pour le tabac, et à des contraintes importantes en termes d’accès aux soins et à l’alimentation. Pour mieux prévenir la dénutrition et les déficiences vitaminiques et minérales chez lespersonnes en situation d’exclusion, nous avons mis au point un aliment enrichi facile à consommer dansla rue : le Vitapoche®. Il s’agit d’une pâte chocolatée résistante à la contamination bactérienne, emballéedans un sachet hermétique. Quantifying the contribution of foods with unfavourable nutrient profiles to nutritionally adequate diets Inra

That ‘all foods can fit’ into a healthy diet is a long-standing principle of dietetic practice. The present study quantified the relative contributions of foods to encourage and foods to limit, using new techniques of individual diet optimisation and nutrient profiling. Individual foods from every food group were assigned to four nutrient profile classes based on the French SAIN,LIM system. Foods with the most favourable nutrient profiles were in class 1, and foods with the least favourable nutrient profiles were in class 4.
