Driving competitive and facilitative interactions in oak dehesas through management practices Inra
Moreno Marcos, G.; Obrador, J.J.; Garcia, E.; Cubera, E.; Montero, M.J.; Pulido, E.; Dupraz, C..
Dehesas are extant multi-purpose agroforestry systems that consist of a mosaic of widely-spaced scattered oaks (Quercus ilex L.) combined with crops, pasture or shrubs. We aimed to clarify the role of trees in dehesas of CW Spain focussed on the analysis of tree-understorey interactions. Spatial variability of resources (light, soil moisture and fertility), microclimate, fine roots of both herbaceous plants and trees and forage yield was measured. Additionally, we compared the nutritional and physiological status, growth and acorn production of oaks in cropped (fodder crop), grazed (native grasses) and encroached (woody understorey) dehesa plots. Significant light interception by trees was limited to the close vicinity of the trees, with very low reduction...

Farm-SAFE: the process of developing a plot- and farmscale model of arable, forestry, and silvoarable economics Inra
Graves, A.R.; Burgess, P.J.; Liagre, F.; Terreaux, J.P.; Borrel, T.; Dupraz, C.; Palma, J.; Herzog, F..
Financial feasibility and financial return are two key issues that farmers and land owners consider when deciding between alternative land uses such as arable farming, forestry and agroforestry. Moreover regional variations in yields, prices and government grants mean that the relative revenue and cost of such systems can vary substantially within Europe. To aid our understanding of these variations, the European Commission sponsored a research project called ‘‘Silvoarable Agroforestry For Europe’’ (SAFE). This paper describes the process of developing a new economic model within that project. The initial stages included establishing criteria for the model with end-users and reviewing the literature and existing models. This indicated that the economic...

Implementation and calibration of the parameter-sparse Yield-SAFE model to predict production and land equivalent ratio in mixed tree and crop systems under two contrasting production situations in Europe Inra
Graves, A.R.,; Burgess, P.J.; Palma, J.; Keesman, K.J.; van der Werf, W.; Dupraz, C.; van Keulen, H.; Herzog, F.; Mayus, M..
Silvoarable agroforestry, the integration of trees and arable crops on the same area, has the potential to offer production, ecological, and societal benefits. However, the uptake of such systems in Europe has been limited by a combination of unsupportive policies and uncertainty concerning their productivity, profitability, and environmental impact. Faced with a lack of experimental data, the parameter-sparse Yield-SAFE model offers one method for generating plausible yield data and improving understanding of production in mixed tree-crop systems under European conditions. The applicability of the model was examined by: (i) selecting two contrasting sites in France and the UK with measured agricultural, silvoarable and/or forestry data, (ii) implementing...

Introduction of hybrid walnut trees in arable systems: which impact on nitrogen dynamic in the presence of a fluctuating watertable? Inra
Andrianarisoa, K.S.; Talbot, G.; Dufour, L.; Dupraz, C..
The agroforestry system is a system which combines trees and crops on the same land. In a 10 years old intercropped plantation of hybrid walnut (Juglans regia x nigra), Mulia and Dupraz (2006) showed that due to the competition with winter crops, trees developed deeper root. These deep rootsmay intercept leached N (Jose et al., 2000) and increase the organic matter input in deeper horizons through their turnover. This supply of additional organic matter, combined with the presence of afluctuating watertable, may change the pattern of the soil N mineralization and the organic matter decomposition along soil profile. The aim of this study was to highlight the impact of the introduction of hybrid walnut trees in arable system on the N dynamic in the presence...

Mixing plant species in cropping systems: concepts, tools and models. A review Inra
Malezieux, E.; Crozat, Y.; Dupraz, C.; Laurans, M.; Makowski, D.; Ozier-Lafontaine, H.; Rapidel, B.; De Tourdonnet, S.; Valantin-Morison, M..
The evolution of natural ecosystems is controled by a high level of biodiversity, In sharp contrast, intensive agricultural systems involve monocultures associated with high input of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Intensive agricultural systems have clearly negative impacts on soil and water quality and on biodiversity conservation. Alternatively, cropping systems based on carefully designed species mixtures reveal many potential advantages under various conditions, both in temperate and tropical agriculture. This article reviews those potential advantages by addressing the reasons for mixing plant species; the concepts and tools required for understanding and designing cropping systems with mixed species; and the ways of simulating multispecies...

Silvoarable systems in Europe - past, present and future prospects Inra
Eichhorn, M.P.; Paris, P.; Herzog, F.; Incoll, L.D.; Liagre, F.; Mantzanas, K.; Mayus, M.; Moreno, G.; Papanastasi, V.P.; Pilbeam, D.J.; Pisanelli, A.; Dupraz, C..
Mixed systems of agriculture incorporating combinations of trees and crops have formed key elements of the landscape of Europe throughout historical times, and many such systems continue to function in the present day. In many cases they represent formerly widespread traditional systems in decline and a number have already become extinct or exist only in a threatened state. The causes are both practical and economic. The agricultural subsidy regime within the European Union is presently unfavourable towards silvoarable practices, which has been a major factor in their recent decline. The silvoarable systems of Europe can be split into two classes according to location – northern Europe and the Mediterranean. The latter contains not only a greater area of...
