Changes in blood gonadotropin level in mature female carp following hypophysial homogenate injections Animal Physiology

A hypophysial homogenate injection increased blood gonadotropin level in adult female carp and maintained it at that level for three days after injection. The blood gonadotropin level in adult female carp seems to be dependent on the physiological condition of the ovary expressed by the relation of old oocytes with a completed vitellogenesis process to the new ones, and the relation of the oocytes with the nucleus shifted to the periphery to those with a centrally placed nucleus.

Temperature and reproduction in tench: effect of a rise in the annual temperature regime on gonadotropin level, gametogenesis and spawning. II. The female Animal Physiology

Female tench were bred for two consecutive years under different thermoperiods ; the effect of the thermoperiods on vitellogenesis, spawning, plasma and pituitary gonadotropin (GTH) levels was studied. The temperature did not affect development during the preparatory period. We found no ovarian development below 10°C. The temperature accelerated vitellogenesis only if the mean daily average was more than 10°C and the rate of increase of that parameter from 10 to 23°C (spawning temperature) determined female fertility. The date of first spawning may be predicted by the summation of degree days higher than 10°C. GTH secretion increased during vitellogenesis to reach maximal values during spawning. The annual reproduction cycle in adult carp in Poland: ovarian state and serum gonadotropin level Animal Physiology

In environmental conditions in Poland, new vitellogenesis began in carp just after the spawning season. This phase was correlated with the maintenance of a high serum, gonadotropin level, which decreased and remained low when the temperature was also low ; oogenesis remained blocked at the stage attained before the drop in temperature and gonadotropin level. The rise of temperature in May increased GTH and ovarian responsiveness to hypophysation treatment. Although pituitary function seemed normal in some fish, there was no spawning even after hypophysation treatment. Resorbing oocytes were present during the whole year, and a minimum rate of GTH secretion would be necessary to prevent massive resorption. Animals were ready for a new reproduction cycle...
