Several fleets with various fishing strategies operate as a mixed fishery in the Bay of Biscay. Among the main fleets, bottom trawlers target Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus) and, together with gillnetters, they also catch hake (Merluccius merluccius). Trawling leads to average-size catches that are below the minimum landing size (MLS); such catches are discarded since they cannot be sold. These discards result in negative impacts on stock renewal, as most of them do not survive. This also results in an economic loss for both bottom trawlers and gillnetters since these discards represent a future loss of rent. This study, based on the 2009 and 2010 selectivity experiments at sea, assesses the short- and long-term bio-economic impacts of four... |

In this paper we used a modelling approach integrating both physical and biological constraints to understand the biogeographical distribution of the great scallop Pecten maximus in the English Channel during its whole life cycle. A 3D bio-hydrodynamical model (ECO-MARS3D) providing environmental conditions was coupled to (i) a population dynamics model and (ii) an individual ecophysiological model (Dynamic Energy Budget model). We performed the coupling sequentially, which underlined the respective role of biological and physical factors in defining P. maximus distribution in the English Channel. Results show that larval dispersion by hydrodynamics explains most of the scallop distribution and enlighten the main known hotspots for the population,... |

Academia and management agencies show a growing interest for ecosystem-based fishery management (EBFM). However, the way to operationalize this approach remains challenging. The present paper illustrates how the concepts of stochastic co-viability, which accounts for dynamic complexities, uncertainties, risk and sustainability constraints, can be useful for the implementation of EBFM. In the present case, this concept is used to identify fishing strategies that satisfy both ecological conservation and economic sustainability in a multi-species, multi-fleet context. Economic Viability Analysis (EVA) and the broader Co-Viability Analysis (CVA), are proposed to expand the usual Population Viability Analysis (PVA) and precautionary approach. An illustration is... |

Basically, a dredge is a bottom-towed gear and consists of a metal frame with a blade or teeth, to dig into the sediment and extract the shelled molluscs, and a mesh bag to collect the catch. Whereas hand dredging is observed on some intertidal beds (Donax trunculus in France), the use of dredge generally needs a fishing boat. There is a great diversity of dredge types, with specific designs used to target different species in particular beds: Manual dredges for Donax (Donax trunculus), Warty venus (Venus verrucosa) and clams (Venerupis pulastra, Ruditapes sp) Dredges for King scallops (Pecten maximus) Dredges for Warty venus (Venus verrucosa) Dredge for Queen scallops (black and white, Chlamys varia and Chlamys opercularia) Dredges for small... |

Most worldwide fish stocks are overexploited, and so exploited beyond the Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) and the Maximum Economic Yield (MEY). Not exploiting fisheries resources at MSY or MEY leads to the loss of production and rents from the fisheries. A large part of the EU fisheries are managed based on single species stock assessments; however, in reality, most species are caught together with other species and by different fleets. In multi-species and multi-fleet fisheries, single species assessments, and consequently MSY and MEY reference points, are often not valid, and so the catch recommendations. In this paper it is investigated the MSY and MEY estimation in multi-species and multi-fleet fisheries in comparison to single species assessments.... |

This project systematically examines the bivalve dredging process and its physiological and ecological consequences. The literature on ecology and population dynamics of the target species, dredge design and fisheries and the environmental effects of dredging and selectivity of dredging is reviewed. A programme of experimental work, both laboratory and field studies is described in scallop and clam dredge fisheries in European waters; scallop species (UK, France) Pecten maximus, Aequipecten opercularis, clam species (Italy; N. Adriatic) Chamelea gallina, clam species (Portugal) Spisula solida, Donax trunculus, Callista chione. Selectivity measures and dredge design are examined for their consequences in terms of environmental effects. Studies included... |

In the 1960s, with a drop in the king scallop stock, the clam became a substitution resource with productions of over 400 tonnes. The drop in the production until the disruption of the fishery in the 1980s is the combined consequence of the increase of the fishing capacities with an unfavourable populating demographic strategy. Large deposits are fairly rare. In 7 years, only one age group, born in 1971, withstood the fishery. Many age groups of satisfactory abundance, from the end of the 80s on, combined with a total disruption of the fishery for a few years, lead to a recovery of the stock with fishing levels equivalent (today) to those of the 1950s. The clam, though less iconic than the king scallop in the local context, has now been for a number of... |

During the 1950s, the clam played only a bit part in the local maritime context. It was the focus of a different fleet than the king scallop fleet, with a lesser fishing capacity (fleet from the Relecq Kerhuon) and an average annual catch of around 150 tonnes. In the 1960s, with a drop in the king scallop stock, the clam became a substitution resource with productions of over 400 tonnes. The first stages of this evolution are detailed by Le Gall (1969) and Piboubès (1973). Slowly, the fleet developed (from the 70s on, with the progressive arrival of seaweed boats in the fishery) The drop of the production until the disruption of the fishery in the 1980s is the combined consequence of the increase of the fishing capacities with an unfavourable populating... |

The exploited stocks of wild bivalves (common cockles, dog cockles, clams, and spisules) in the Norman-Breton gulf vary according to the fishing activity and the environmental conditions. Different studies, carried out by the Ifremer in this region (between 1982 and 1998), enabled the evaluation of the stocks available for fishing as well as the collection of data on these species (demographic structure, growth...). For more information on the 1993-1994 studies and a presentation of the site and the fishery please refer to the reports by Berthou, 1987 and Noël et al, 1995. The bivalve expedition conducted in May 2002, enabled us to update the data on the populations of dog cockles and banded carpet shells, then of spisules and clams, using the same... |
