The present work examines the spatio-temporal biomass trends of Mullus barbatus and Mullus surmuletus in the Mediterranean Sea through the analysis of a time series of data coming from the Mediterranean International Trawl Surveys (MEDITS), accomplished annually from 1994 to 2015. The biomass of both species showed clear declining trends below 150 to 200 m depth, which were steeper in the case of M. barbatus. Increases in temporal biomass trends were observed for M. barbatus from 2008 onward in most geographic sub-areas (GSAs), while stability was mostly observed for M. surmuletus. For both species, dynamic factor analysis revealed similarities among neighbouring GSAs and the subsequent cluster analysis identified two major GSA groups corresponding to the...

An ecological niche modelling (ENM) approach was developed to model the suitable habitat 36 for the 0-group European hake, Merluccius merluccius L., 1758, in the Mediterranean Sea. 37 The ENM was built combining knowledge on biological traits of hake recruits (e.g. growth, 38 settlement, mobility and feeding strategy) with patterns of selected ecological variables 39 (chlorophyll-a fronts and concentration, bottom depth, sea bottom current and temperature) 40 to highlight favourable nursery habitats. The results show that hake nurseries require stable 41 bottom temperature (11.8-15.0oC), low bottom currents (< 0.034 m.s-1) and a frequent 42 occurrence of productive fronts in low chlorophyll-a areas (0.1-0.9 mg.m-3) to support a 43 successful...

Spatial distribution of marine macro-litter on the seafloor in the northern Mediterranean Sea: the MEDITS initiative ArchiMer

Marine litter is one of the main sources of anthropogenic pollution in the marine ecosystem, with plastic representing a global threat. This paper aims to assess the spatial distribution of plastic macro-litter on the seafloor, identifying accumulation hotspots at a northern Mediterranean scale. Density indices (items km–2) from the MEDITS trawl surveys (years 2013-2015) were modelled by generalized additive models using a Delta-type approach and several covariates: latitude, longitude, depth, seafloor slope, surface oceanographic currents and distances from main ports. To set thresholds for the identification of accumulation areas, the percentiles (85th, 90th and 95th) of the plastic spatial density distribution were computed on the raster data. In the...
