Ammoniakfordampning fra udbragt gylle Organic Eprints
Sommer, Sven G.; Hansen, Martin N..

EFFECTS OF ANAEROBIC DIGESTION AND SEPARATION OF PIG SLURRY ON ODOR EMISSION Organic Eprints
Hansen, Martin N.; Kai, Peter; Møller, Henrik B..
Storage and land application of livestock manure causes considerable odor nuisance to the surrounding neighborhood. Anaerobic digestion and separation of slurry change composition and physical properties of slurry and may therefore lessen the odor pollution during storage and land application. An experiment was set up to study the effects of anaerobic digestion and separation of slurry on the emission of odor. Odor concentration above treated and untreated slurry was compared during storage and following land application using GC/MS analysis and dynamic dilution olfactometry. Slurry concentrations of malodorous volatile fatty acids were reduced by between 79 to 97% by anaerobic digestion, while concentrations of malodorous phenolic and indolic odor...

Effects of separation and anaerobic digestion of slurry on odour and ammonia Emission during Subsequent Storage and land application Organic Eprints
Hansen, Martin N.; Birkmose, Torkild S.; Mortensen, Børge; Skaaning, Kent.
A study was set up to investigate the environmental effects of anaerobic digestion and separa-tion of slurry. Volatilisation of odour and ammonia from treated and untreated slurry were compared both during storage and following land application. It was found that ammonia volatilisation was higher from uncovered stores of anaerobically digested and separated slurry than from untreated slurry, however, when slurry stores were covered efficiently, the loss rate was low and equal for treated and untreated slurry. Ammonia volatilisation following land application was found to be lower from both anaerobically digested and separated slurry compared to untreated slurry. Treatment of slurry by anaerobic digestion and separation did not reduce odour nuisances during...

Emission and production of greenhouse gases and ammonia during storage of solids separated from pig slurry: effects of covering Organic Eprints
Hansen, Martin N.; Henriksen, Kaj; Sommer, Sven G..
Separation of slurry produces a solid fraction that is stored in manure heaps before being used as a fertiliser in crop production. Considerable amounts of ammonia (NH3) and greenhouse gases may be emitted during storage, which has deleterious environmental effects. The emission levels can be expected to depend on oxygenation level inside the bulk of the stored manure and therefore on storage conditions. An experiment was thus set up to study gaseous emissions during storage of the solid fraction, and the effects of the oxygenation of manure heaps on emissions of NH3 and various greenhouse gases. Emissions of NH3 and the greenhouse gases methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and carbon dioxide (CO2) from an uncovered and covered heap of solids separated from...

Evaluation of the Photoacoustic Multi-gas Monitor during measurements of gas emissions from composting livestock manure Organic Eprints
Hansen, Martin N.; Maahn, Merete.
Livestock manure contributes significantly to the atmospheric concentration of ammonia (NH3) and green house gasses. Increase in the atmospheric concentration of these gasses cause serious environmental impact locally and globally. There is therefore a need for abatement technique to reduce the gas emission from manure, and for safe and reliable measuring methods. The Photoacoustic Multi-gas Monitor (PMM) is an efficient and handy method for continuous and simultaneous measurements of concentrations of different gases and its reliability was therefore tested during measurements of gas emission from a store of composting livestock manure. Concentrations of ammonia, methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) in airflows entering and leaving a store of composting...

Heterogeneity inside heaps of composting livestock manure and its influence on emission loss of greenhouse gases and ammonia Organic Eprints
Hansen, Martin N..
Considerable amounts of methane and nitrous oxide were emitted during storage of solid pig manure generated by slurry separation. The production of greenhouse gases inside the heap was found to be heavily influenced by the oxygen accessibility, which again was influenced by length of storage and the distance to the heap surface. This implies that emission of greenhouse gases from stores of solid manure may be heavily influenced by the size of heaps and the length of storage. Attention should therefore be paid to the size of heap and the length of the storage period when composting studies for inventories of greenhouse gas emission are planned or used.

Hansen, Martin N.; Birkmose, Torkild S..

Influence of storage of deep litter manure on ammonia loss and uniformity of mass and nutrient distribution following land spreading Organic Eprints
Hansen, Martin N..
Deep litter manure contains considerable amounts of plant nutrients and is therefore used as a fertiliser in crop production. However, the manurial value of deep litter manure is reduced by ammonia volatilisation and uneven land spreading. Although storage before spreading may improve the spreading evenness of deep litter manure, it may also influence the potential for ammonia losses. A study was therefore designed to investigate how storage of deep litter ma-nure influences spreading evenness and ammonia volatilisation following land spreading. The ammonia volatilisation following land spreading was found to be reduced by 44% following storage, as the ammonium content of the deep litter manure had declined considerably during the storage period. The...

Lagring af fast husdyrgødning forbedrer spredningen, men øger næringsstoftabet Organic Eprints
Hansen, Martin N..

Methane emissions from livestock manure - effects of storage conditions and climate Organic Eprints
Hansen, Martin N.; Sommer, Sven G.; Henriksen, Kaj.
Livestock manure contributes significantly to the global emission of methane (CH4). Methane is emitted during storage of both liquid and solid manure. Part of the solid manure is produced in loose housing systems with solid floors where the manure is stored in a deep litter mat, which is a mixture of straw, urine and faeces. As anaerobic conditions are found in the lower part of the deep litter mat, significant amounts of the carbon stored in the deep litter may be emitted as CH4. It has been estimated that a cattle deep litter mat contributed 11 to 18% of the total CH4 (from cattle digestion and litter) emitted. This source of CH4 does not seem to be included in the IPCC default value for solid manure. During outdoor storage of solid manure, CH4 can be...

Hansen, Martin N.; Birkmose, Torkild; Mortensen, Børge; Skaaning, Kent.

Optimising farmyard manure utilization by varying the application time and tillage strategy Organic Eprints
Hansen, Elly M.; Thomsen, Ingrid K.; Hansen, Martin N..
Abstract. Two field experiments were carried from 1999 to 2001 to assess the effectiveness of autumn, winter and spring application of straw-based farmyard manure (FYM). The soil was a sandy loam containing 106 g clay kg-1 situated in the temperate coastal climate of Denmark. The FYM was applied manually to experimental plots at a target rate of 300 kgN ha-1. The manure was incorporated by three initial tillage strategies (harrowing, rotavating or no-tillage) prior to ploughing. All combinations of tillage strategies were also carried out without manure application. Spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) was grown, followed by ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). The results suggest that, as far as circumstances permit, FYM should be applied in spring to achieve the...

Reduction of ammonia emission by shallow slurry injection: Injection efficiency and additional energy demand Organic Eprints
Hansen, Martin N.; Sommer, Sven G.; Madsen, Niels P..
Ammonia (NH3) emission from livestock production causes undesirable environmental effects and a loss of plant available nitrogen. Much atmospheric NH3 is lost from livestock manure applied in the field. The NH3 emission may be reduced by slurry injection, but slurry injection in general, and especially on grassland, increases the energy demand and places heavy demands on the slurry injection techniques used. The reduction in NH3 emission, injection efficiency and energy demand of six different shallow slurry-injection techniques was examined. The NH3 emission from cattle slurry applied to grassland was reduced by all the injectors tested in the study, but there were major differences in the NH3 reduction potential of the different types of injectors....

Risk of heavy metal accumulation in agricultural soil when livestock manure and organic waste is used for fertilisation Organic Eprints
Hansen, Martin N..
Increased use of livestock manure and organic waste within agriculture may cause soil accumulation of heavy metal. Sewage sludge and composted organic waste are important heavy metal sources. However, livestock manure is the major source of copper and zinc. Heavy metal balances calculations have shown that actual annual inputs of especially copper and zinc exceeds annual output considerably, which may create unacceptable soil concentrations of heavy metals in regions with dense livestock production.

Short-term C and N dynamics in urine patches: Response of nitrifiers to different urinary urea levels Organic Eprints
Petersen, Søren O.; Bol, Roland; Dittert, Klaus; Christofides, Calliopi; Roslev, Peter; Hansen, Martin N..
Managed grasslands can accumulate soil organic carbon and thereby remove CO2 from the atmosphere. When grazed, however, the interaction between N inputs (fertilization, feeding, N fixation) and excretal returns can lead to sward deterioration and elevated emissions of N2O in urine patches. Both effects may reduce the positive effect of carbon storage on the greenhouse gas balance. A field plot study was carried out between 19 September and 4 October 2001, in which cattle urine amended with 13C- and 15N-labelled urea was added to a sandy loam pasture. Two levels of urea, corresponding to 23.3 and 39.8 g urea-N m-2, were compared with an unamended control. Ammonia losses corresponded to 14 and 12% of the urea-N applied in the low (UL) and high (UH) urea...

Hansen, Martin N.; Mortensen, Henrik S.; Sørensen, Karsten.

Technologies to reduce the environmental impacts and nitrogen losses of livestock manure Organic Eprints
Hansen, Martin N..
Increased attention is today paid to the environmental impact of livestock production due changes in agricultural practice and livestock manure handling. Livestock manure is an excellent source of plant nutrients, but recycling of its nutrients is greatly dependent on manure management practices. As well, several environmental effects are related to the storage and handling of livestock manure, including emissions of ammonia, odour, and greenhouse gases. The present research deals with technologies for reducing the environmental impacts and nitrogen losses of livestock manure. Livestock manure is an important source of ammonia (NH3), being responsible for more than 80% of national emissions. The volatilisation of ammonia reduces the nitrogen content of...
