Agronomic strategies for the organic cultivation of potatoes for processing into high quality French fries and potato chips 21
Böhm, Herwart; Krause, Tanja; Haase, Thorsten; Haase, Norbert U.; Loges, Ralf; Heß, Jürgen.
In order to achieve the successful cultivation of potato raw material to be processed into French fries and crisps, the high quality standards set by the processing industry have to be fulfilled and high tuber yields attained. In a cooperative research project, different strategies for the cultivation of high quality potato raw material for processing were examined under the conditions of organic farming. The choice of variety was found to be the most important agronomic instrument for the organic farmer to secure high tuber yields and quality. Varieties Agria and Marena can be recommended as they gave high tuber yields of the required size grade and also high French fry quality both at harvest and after storage. With regard to processing into crisps,...

Anbauwürdigkeit und Vorfruchtwert verschiedener Körnerleguminosen-Anbausysteme im Praxisversuch in Luxemburg 21
Stoll, Evelyne; Heidt, Hanna; Bohn, Thomas; Heß, Jürgen; Zimmer, Stephanie.
Due to the protein deficit in Europe and the many negative impacts related to soy imports from overseas, it is important to increase the cultivation of grain legumes for regional fodder production. Therefore, as part of the COBRA project, two on-farm trial of different grain legume cropping systems were set up at two Luxembourgish organic farms, with the aim to demonstrate the practicality of growing grain legumes and to study their fodder and pre-crop value, as well as their suitability for cultivation under organic growing conditions in Luxembourg. Overall, all the tested grain legumes, with the exception of winter faba bean in Colmar-Berg, showed good suitability for regional high-protein fodder production. Both lupin species showed a good previous...

Reduced tillage and green manures may be capable to further improve organic crop production systems. However, it is presumed that under organic farming conditions a lower intensity of soil tillage may reduce nitrogen (N) availability and increase weed pressure. A combination of reduced tillage with an appropriate green manure species could answer these problems. The results of a repeated one year trial on the research farm of University of Kassel, regarding the effects of three different green manure species (Sinapis alba, Trifolium resupinatum and Vicia sativa) and conventional (plough) vs. reduced tillage (2012 chisel, 2013 disc harrow) on N availability in spring and on the yield of main crop oat are the topic of this paper. In both years, in the...

Developing a Documentation System for Evaluating the Societal Impact of Science 21
Wolf, Birge; Szerencsits, Manfred; Gaus, Hansjörg; Müller, Christoph E.; Heß, Jürgen.
The evaluation of research beyond scientific impact is increasingly required, but has not yet been widely applied. One reason is that data necessary for the evaluation of the societal impact of science are often not available in sufficient quantities or suitable form. This paper describes first results from a research project that develops improved documentation to serve evaluation beyond scientific impact. Firstly, we refer to the need to do this, and to the specific challenges for data assessment in this area. Secondly, we describe the concept for documenting achievements of research beyond scientific impact with a research information system that integrates the relevant parts of research proposals and reports. This enables data to be provided without...

Die Integration von Naturschutzzielen in den Ökologischen Landbau - ein Projekt auf der Hessischen Staatsdomäne Frankenhausen. 21

The interest of organic farmers for adopting conservation agriculture practices is currently growing. But, there are few technical and scientific references available for organic farmers when they start applying conservation agriculture practices. The main objectives of this study are (1) to explore the diversity of crop management practices using conservation agriculture methods among European farmers, and (2) to identify main farmers’ strategies. We carried out a survey of 159 farmers located in 10 European countries with a questionnaire with closed-ended questions. Data were analysis with a multi factor analysis followed by clustering to identify groups of farmers that share the same type of spring and winter crop managements. Organic farmers in Europe,...

E+E-Projekt „Integration von Naturschutzzielen in den Ökologischen Landbau am Beispiel der Hessischen Staatsdomäne Frankenhausen“ - Maßnahmen in der bewirtschafteten Fläche 21
van Elsen, Thomas; Godt, Jochen; Haase, Thorsten; Fricke, Thomas; Wachendorf, Michael; Saucke, Helmut; Möller, Detlev; Quintern, Michael; Otto, Marius; Kölsch, Eberhard; Baars, Ton; Heß, Jürgen.
On the Hessian state domain Frankenhausen near Kassel the project “The Integration of Nature Conservation into Organic Farming” (supported by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation with funds of the Federal Environmental Ministry) aims to support biodiversity not only by restoring biotopes on the farmland. The focus lies on measures to enhance the diversity on the arable land and the pastures of the farm. A participatory approach is striven for, in which the scientists and planners take the role of a companion catalyst or moderator.

The Hessian state domain Frankenhausen near Kassel was converted to organic farming in July 1998 and serves as a research and demonstration farm of the univer-sity. Before that time the farm changed constantly by typical intensification of conven-tional farming: The landscape is a mirror of intense use: cleared and drained fields, canalised brooks and large fields with few structural elements. – Within the project “The Integration of Nature Conservation into Organic Farming” (supported by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation with funds from the Federal Envi-ronmental Ministry) and based on the analysis of the present situation using methods of landscape ecology. Measures to restore brooks, structural elements and biotopes are to be...

Effect of Different Defoliation Systems of Ryegrass–Clover on Yield and Selected Quality Parameters of Organic Potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) for Industrial Processing at Harvest and After Storage 21
Dresow, Jana; Krause, Tanja; Haase, Norbert U.; Loges, Ralf; Heß, Jürgen; Böhm, Herwart.
The nitrogen supply plays an important role in achieving quality characteristics in organic potato farming. Different defoliation systems of ryegrass–clover may influence the amount of fixed nitrogen available to the tubers. In a field experiment, the effect of different defoliation systems (cutting, mulching and a combination of them) of the pre-crop ryegrass–clover on selected quality attributes of organically grown potatoes, destined for processing into French fries (cv. Agria) or crisps (cv. Marlen), were conducted in two consecutive years (2003 and 2004). Parameters studied included compounds related to the sensory properties of potato food (tuber dry matter, starch, reducing sugars) as well as nutritional quality (nitrogen, minerals). Selected...

Effect of intercropping normal-leafed or semi-leafless winter peas and triticale after shallow and deep ploughing on agronomic performance, grain quality and succeeding winter wheat yield 21
Gronle, Annkathrin; Heß, Jürgen; Böhm, Herwart.
Winter peas (Pisum sativum L.) are a promising alternative to spring peas in organic farming. Intercroppingwinter peas and cereals may be a beneficial way to improve lodging resistance in normal-leafed andweed suppression in semi-leafless winter peas. At the same time, there is an increasing interest in areduction in tillage intensity, e.g. shallow ploughing. A normal-leafed, coloured-flowered (cv. E.F.B. 33)and a semi-leafless, white-flowered winter pea (cv. James) were cultivated as sole crops or in intercropswith triticale (Triticosecale Wittmarck) on a loam soil under Northern German conditions during twoseasons (2009/2010, 2010/2011) and compared for winter survival, lodging resistance, yield performance, grain quality and succeeding winter wheat...

Effect of ploughing depth and mechanical soil loading on soil physical properties, weed infestation, yield performance and grain quality in sole and intercrops of pea and oat in organic farming 21
Gronle, Annkathrin; Lux, Guido; Böhm, Herwart; Schmidtke, Knut; Wild, Melanie; Demmel, Markus; Brandhuber, Robert; Wilbois, Klaus-Peter; Heß, Jürgen.
The effect of ploughing depth and mechanical soil loading on the performance of pea sole crops, oat sole crops and pea–oat intercrops was investigated in field experiments under organic farming conditions at two sites in Germany in 2009 and 2010. The two ploughing depths were short-term shallow ploughing to a soil depth of 7–10 cm and deep ploughing to 25–30 cm. Wheel loads of 26 and 45 kN, which correspond to typical rear wheel loads of field machinery used during sowing operations, were compared to an uncompacted control. Shallow ploughing resulted in a greater penetration resistance in the 14–28 cm soil layer compared to deep ploughing. An increase in mechanical soil loading intensity increased the bulk density and decreased the air capacity in the...

In an EU CRAFT project (COOP-CT-2004-508458) running from March 2004 to March 2006, an international consortium of producers of environmentally benign crop inputs, RTD performers and end users, evaluated the production and use of products manu-factured from different raw materials such as seaweeds, pine needles, trees and herbaceous species or physically hydrolysed bovine fur and hair residues. At the field level, the products were applied as solid pellets or liquids, as fertilisers or sprays, respectively. This paper presents as an example results from field trials of organically grown potatoes and tomatoes at the University of Kassel. Assessments were per-formed on yield, plant health and quality aspects. In most of the experiments solid products...

The Aim of this study has been to evaluate in two two-year field trials the pre-crop effect of different grain legumes (e.g. soy bean, peas or lupines) in the same environment and to detect possible effects of grain legumes on the N-supply, the yield potential and the yield structure of the subsequent crop winter wheat. According to different pre-crop yields, a higher but different nitrogen supply for subsequent winter wheat was observed in all N2-fixing pre-crop treatments. In contrast to non-fixings control higher NO3-N contents in soil and higher yields in subsequent winter wheat (up to 24 dt*ha- 1 surplus) were observed.

Eignung von Bradyrhizobien-Impfpräparaten zur Inokulation von Sojabohnen 21
Zimmer, Steffi; Messmer, Monika; Haase, Thorsten; Mindermann, Anke; Schulz, Hannes; Wilbois, Klaus-Peter; Heß, Jürgen.

In Europe soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) has gained attention due to its ability to produce high quality protein for human and animal consumption. Under low temperature conditions in Central Europe the inoculation with different Bradyrhizobia inoculants has lead to unsatisfying nodulation results. The aim of this study was to test the ability of commercially available inoculants under cool growing conditions in Central Europe. In 2011 and 2012 four Bradyrhizobia inoculants were tested on three early soybean varieties in a field trial in Germany. The number of nodules was assessed six weeks after sowing and at flowering. Yield and protein content were determined at harvest. Product 1 was inefficient to produce nodules, resulting in a severe reduction in...

Below-ground plant N (BGN) of grain legumes is an important N pool for subsequent crops. Especially the easily available rhizodeposits (RD) provide an important N input, which might also be relevant in mixed stands. The objective of the present study was to estimate the time course of the BGN, especially RD-N, and the effect of mycorrhization on RD-N. Therefore, the quantity of RD-N of peas with and without mycorrhiza (Frisson and P2) was estimated at four different growth stages. The results show that the relative contribution of BGN to total plant N was equal in both varieties during the growing season. The contribution of RD-N to total plant N decreased over time. Mycorrhization did not affect the quantity of N-rhizodeposition. Consequences for mixed...
