Uniform quality drying throughout the drying chamber of a dryer is important for a quality oriented drying process. The final quality of dried products significantly depends upon the drying temperature. A batch type dryer was developed for uniform air distribution. ANSYS-fluent was used to analyse the temperature distribution in the dryer. To assess the effect of drying temperature homogeneity on quality parameters, color and shrinkage of potato slices (6 mm thick) at 60° C were measured. The color parameters were quantified in CIELAB color space system. The shrinkage of slices (20 mm round samples) was measured using image analysis software. The rate of color change was found uniform at all sections of drying chamber with high value of R2. The kinetics of... |

Consumer trust in the food industry is heavily reliant upon accurate labelling of meat products. As such, methods which can verify whether meat is correctly labelled are of great value to producers, retailers, and consumers. This paper illustrates two approaches to classify between, fresh and frozen thawed, and in a novel manner matured and matured frozen-thawed, as well as fresh and matured beef using the 500-1010 nm waveband, captured using hyperspectral imaging, and CIELAB measurements. The results show successful classification based upon CIELAB between 1) fresh and frozen-thawed (CCR = 0.93), and 2) fresh and matured (CCR = 0.92). With successful classification between matured and matured frozen-thawed beef using the entire spectral range (CCR =... |

The drying behavior of fresh, matured, and frozen beef, marinated with 0.5% salt, 1% salt, salt and vinegar, and blind samples, dried at 70°C, was investigated. Weight and color (CIELAB) were measured and images of the samples were created with a hyperspectral imaging camera. Results show that the marinade and the type of beef influences the drying behavior of beef, but not the final color. Results from the hyperspectral imaging show that it is possible to build good fitting prediction models resulting in high R2 (min. 0.81, max. 0.98) and low RMSE (min. 0.08, max. 2.35) for moisture content, a* and b* values. |

Drying of foods is one of the oldest food preservation techniques, but it gains particular importance when regarding food quality and shelf life. Meat snacks are of growing interest because they are high in protein but low in fat and carbohydrates. In organic food production the use of preservatives is limited, and for this reason product specific drying strategies and pretreatments are essential. In this study fresh beef slices were treated with salt (0,5 % and 1 %) and salt and vinegar (0.5% and 5 %) and were dried at 70 °C in a convection dryer. Moisture content and color were measured during the drying process alongside visual to near infra-red hyperspectral images of the slices. The optimal wavelengths for moisture content and color were determined... |

The Hessian state domain Frankenhausen near Kassel was converted to organic farming in July 1998 and serves as a research and demonstration farm of the univer-sity. Before that time the farm changed constantly by typical intensification of conven-tional farming: The landscape is a mirror of intense use: cleared and drained fields, canalised brooks and large fields with few structural elements. – Within the project “The Integration of Nature Conservation into Organic Farming” (supported by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation with funds from the Federal Envi-ronmental Ministry) and based on the analysis of the present situation using methods of landscape ecology. Measures to restore brooks, structural elements and biotopes are to be... |

Correct irrigation management aims to determine the right amount of water at the right time. Also, it is one of the available tools to reduce energy and water costs, enabling maximum crop production. Considering these aspects, a study was conducted to determine the effects of different soil water tensions on rapeseed crop. For this purpose, an experiment was carried out in Brazil, at the department of Agricultural Engineering at the Federal University of Lavras, from April to October 2008. The experimental design was completely randomised, with four treatments of different soil water tensions (20, 40, 80 and 120 kPa) and four replicates amounting to 16 experimental plots. Crop vegetative, productive parameters and qualitative grain parameters were... |

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the performance of bulk charcoal pad configuration, experimentally. For this, a number of experiments have been conducted in a wind tunnel in order to evaluate the pressure drop, cooling efficiency and specific water consumption as a function of air velocity, water flow rate and pad configuration. The test were carried out at six levels of air velocity (0.12, 0.51, 0.82, 1.05, 1.10 and 1.14 m s-1), three water flow rates (2.2, 3.2 and 5.2 l min-1) and three pad configurations: single layer pad (SLP), double layer pad (DLP) and triple layer pad (TLP) made out of small and large size charcoal particle of equivalent diameter 30 mm and 50 mm respectively. It was found that pressure drop range of small size charcoal pads... |

The several advantages of conservation tillage systems are interesting for organic farmers too. The positive effects concerning the reduction of soil erosion are well known and documented. The more residues are left on the soil surface the higher reduction of soil erosion is achieved. Nevertheless the plough is still the main tillage equipment in organic agriculture systems. A first step towards conservation tillage might be the tillage before intercrops. In a three years project the relationship of emergence rate from straw quantity, working depth and residue cover is investigated. Thick mulch layers have negative effects on the emergence rate of the followed crop. Modern machinery for conservation tillage improve the incorporation of crop... |

Initial quality grading of meat is generally carried out using invasive and occasionally destructive sampling for the purposes of pH testing. Precise pH and thresholds exist to allow the classification of different statuses of meat, e.g. for detection of dry, firm, and dark (DFD) (when dealing with cattle and sheep), or pale, soft exudative meat (when dealing with pork). This paper illustrates that threshold detection for pH level in beef with different freshness levels (fresh, fresh frozen-thawed, matured, and matured frozen-thawed). Use of support vector machine (SVM) analysis allowed for the classification of beef samples with a pH above 5.9, and below 5.6, with an accuracy of 91% and 99% respectively. Biochemical and physical conditions of the meat... |

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) was utilised for the determination of moisture content of potato slices with three thicknesses (5 mm, 7 mm, 9 mm) at three drying temperatures (50 °C, 60 °C, 70 °C) during convective drying in a laboratory hot air dryer. The Page, thin-layer drying model was found better to explain the drying kinetics with a fitting accuracy of R2 (0.96–0.99) and lowest reduced Chi-square (0.00024–0.00090), Root mean square errors (RMSE) (0.014–0.026), and relative percentage error (1.5%–5.1%) under the used drying conditions. Spectral data were analysed using partial least squares regression (PLS) analysis, a multivariate calibration technique, alongside Monte Carlo Uninformative Variable Elimination (MCUVE-PLS) and competitive adaptive... |

In principal suppressive effects with composts on soilborne diseases are well known. In practise, however, a targeted utilisation is not common due to technical constraints. The more precise composts are applied at the site of action the more effective they are as shown in potatoes to control Rhizoctonia solani with a strip application of composts compared to broadcast application. Similar effects were achieved in peas. Therefore, dosage tools were developed for the use in potato planting machines and sowing machines for grain legumes. It was shown with defined composts (yard waste composts with size fraction <10 mm, 30-40 % humidity) that the developed tools will provide exact longitudinal and lateral application. |

Evapotranspiration is the sum of evaporation of water from soils and transpiration from plants. It is a crucial part of the water cycle and can be measured using lysimeters. However, lysimeters require high maintenance and operation costs; as such, evapotranspiration models are used for making predictions. Thus, the aim of the present study was to calibrate the Hydrus-1D to predict the water balance components of an evapotranspiration cover (in this case, a thin covering layer) for potash tailings piles. Further simulations were performed using different fine fraction proportions, soil textures and crop parameters. A high association between the calibrated and observed drainage of substrates was found, with a variation of 2.9% (approximately 13.6 mm).... |
