L’objectif de ce premier article est de fournir les fondements théoriques de la notion de perméabilité à l’air et les bases méthodologiques de sa métrologie. Un second article montrera l’intérêt de cette notion pour une appréciation peu destructive et rapide de la structure du sol, in situ. Dans une première partie, la loi de Darcy est présentée sous sa forme généralisée au cas de l’écoulement d’un gaz, en présence de deux phases (liquide et gaz). Les limitations conceptuelles à son utilisation sont passées en revue. Hormis l’influence de la teneur en eau sur la perméabilité à l’air, celles-ci sont peu contraignantes (hypothèse d’écoulement laminaire et isotherme en milieu isotrope). Après avoir présenté dans un premier article les fondements théoriques de la perméabilité à l’air, les auteurs montrent dans ce second article l’intérêt de cette grandeur pour une caractérisation rapide et peu destructive de la structure du sol. Dans une première partie, ils définissent un «cahier des charges» pour une appréciation rapide de la structure compte tenu des limites des méthodes existantes. Iron dynamics in the rhizosphere : consequences for plant health and nutrition Inra

Iron is an essential micronutrient for most organisms due to its role in fundamental metabolic processes. In cultivated soils, soil solution iron is mostly oxidized [Fe(III) species] unless local anoxic conditions develop. The concentration of these Fe(III) species is small in soil solution due to the low solubility of ferric oxides, oxyhydroxides, and hydroxides, which is minimal at neutral and alkaline pH. In the rhizosphere, iron concentration in the soil solution is even lower because of its uptake by aerobic organisms (plants and microorganisms), leading to a high level of competition for Fe(III). Quantification of ectomycorrhizal fungal effects on the bioavailability and mobilization of soil P in the rhizosphere of Pinus pinaster Inra

A differential effect of ectomycorrhizal symbiosis on soil P mobilization and host P nutrition is shown after culture of Pinus pinaster associated with Hebeloma cylindrosporum and Rhizopogon roseolus, poor and good oxalate/proton producers, respectively. Plants were grown in minirhizoboxes with a thin layer of a Mediterranean soil with a low level of easily available P. This soil was supplemented, or not, with inorganic P and/or CaCO3. The fungal efficiency on P mobilization and host mineral nutrition was quantified after a 3-month culture period. R. roseolus had a strong effect on the mobilization of poorly available P, whereas H. cylindrosporum had no effect. However, CaCO3 suppressed the positive effect of R. roseolus. A range of key biological functions of plant roots such as uptake, respiration and exudation can considerably alter biogeochemical parameters of the soil in the vicinity of the roots, i.e., the rhizosphere: concentrations of nutrients, toxic elements (e.g., aluminium) and pollutants, concentrations of complexing or chelating compounds, pH and redox potential, partial pressures of gases such as O-2 and CO2, etc. Such parameters can also be directly influenced by the activities of soil microorganisms that are known to be stimulated by root exudation in the rhizosphere.
