Diversification of crop sequences (WP 1): Perennial weed species can be managed when cover crops / green manure crops are included in the crop sequence but interventions must be species dependent, e.g. Elytrigia repens can be promoted by green manures because they prevent post-harvest cultivations. The international research network PRODIVA aims to improved utilization of crop diversification for weed management in northern European organic arable cropping systems. The over-all aim is to support organic agriculture for the exploitation of crop diversification methods to improve weed management and still maintain a diverse weed flora. Die Ackerunkrautervegetation ökologisch bewirtschafteter Wintergetreideflächen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern unter dem Einfluss von Standort und Management Organic Eprints

Ackerunkräuter sind in der praktischen Landwirtschaft immer noch ein wichtiges Thema. Besonderes im ökologischen Landbau gibt es weiterhin Forschungsbedarf. Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde daher die Ackerunkrautvegetation von neun ökologisch bewirtschafteten Landwirtschaftsbetrieben in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern näher untersucht. Dafür wurde die Unkrautvegetation von 17 Wintergetreideflächen im Juni und Juli 2016 bonitiert. Es wurden auf jeder Ackerfläche drei Untersuchungslinien angelegt, jeweils mit einer Gesamtoberfläche von 100 Quadratmetern pro Linie. Farmers deserve credit for contributing to the weed surveys Organic Eprints

Weed surveys were carried out in the PRODIVA project during 2015-2016 with a smooth collaboration with farmers. More than 200 fields were surveyed in six countries around the Baltic Sea. In addition to the weed observations in spring cereal fields we collected information about the farming practices in organic cropping.

From practice to science and back – knowledge and information chains in PRODIVA Organic Eprints

To organize and manage the dissemination process has become a general task within international projects. Within the project PRODIVA (Crop diversification and weed management) we organized these chains as returning cascades between practice (advisors and farmers) and scientists in the Baltic area. A network of farmers was created in each participating region. We collected and used practical knowledge about dominating weed species in Organic spring cereal production. Implications - Specific annual and perennial weeds are a perpetual challenge in the process of tuning up sustainable Organic production. To utilize the perspective of agro-biodiversity would both improve crop yields as well as conserve the ecosystem services of this agriculture system. The successful use of crop diversity strategies provides an additional tool in the toolbox of the farmers, giving them a) an overview of problematic weed species and b) the opportunity to plan their crop diversity based weed management over the course of years in the future.

Diese Studie ist Teil des Core Organic Plus Projekts PRODIVA - eine Zusammenarbeit von nordeuropäischen Unkrautforschungsgruppen im Ostseeraum. Übergeordnetes Ziel ist es, eine diverse und handhabbare Unkrautflora im Ökologischen Landbau zu sichern. Bundesweit hat Mecklenburg Vorpommern einen sehr hohen Anteil an Ökologischer Landwirtschaft. Nach wie vor sind Unkräuter eine Herausforderung in diesen Agrarsystemen. Agrobiodiversität zu fördern, hat in Deutschland einen zunehmenden Stellenwert. The arable vegetation of Baltic organic cereal fields as shaped by crop management Organic Eprints

Weeds remain to be the main challenge within this agricultural system, especially perennials in the north European realm.
