Biology and rearing of Pseudocoremia suavis, an endemic looper (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) with a history of outbreaks on exotic conifers Inra
Berndt, L.; Brockerhoff, E.G.; Jactel, H.; Weiss, T.; Beaton, J..
The life cycle and seasonal phenology of theendemic geometrid Pseudocoremia suavis (Butler) is described, as well as a method for rearing the species continuously in the laboratory on cut foliage of radiata pine (Pinus radiata D.Don). Both males and females demonstrated developmental polymorphism, having either five (Type I) or six(Type II) larval instars. These two larval types did not differ significantly in the total development time (from egg hatch to adult) of around 60 days in either case. The development time and head capsule widths of the penultimate and ultimate instars ofeach type suggest that these two instars areequivalent in both Type I and Type II larvae. In the field, most instars were present throughout the sampling period from mid-November...

Field response of maritime pine scale, Matsucoccus feytaudi Duc. (Homoptera: Margarodidae), to synthetic sex pheromone stereoisomers Inra
Jactel, H.; Menassieu, P.; Lettere, M.; Mori, K.; Einhorn, J..
The absolute configuration of the primary component of the maritime pine scale (Matsucoccus feytaudi) pheromone (i.e., (8E, 10E)-3,7,9-trimethyl-8,10-dodecadien-6-one) was determined as 3S,7R by field-trapping experiments using synthetic stereoisomers and according to previous NMR considerations. The 3R,7R isomer showed similar activity to 3S,7R, whereasM. feytaudi males responded very weakly to the two other candidates (3R,7S and 3S,7S). Further studies were conducted to optimize scale trapping for monitoring scale populations. Results of these studies showed that the trapping efficiency was related to pheromone dose, trap area, and wind speed but not to trap height.

Identification of sex pheromone components of a New Zealand geometrid moth, the common forest looper Pseudocoremia suavis, reveals a possible species complex Inra
Gibb, A.R.; Comeskey, D.; Berndt, L.; Brockerhoff, E.G.; El Sayed, A.M.; Jactel, H.; Suckling, D.M..
Gas chromatography-electroantennographic detection analysis of sex pheromone gland extracts of the common forest looper Pseudocoremia suavis (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), a polyphagous defoliator of introduced Pinaceae and many New Zealand trees, revealed four compounds that elicited antennal responses. The two major active compounds (6Z)-cis-9,10-epoxynonadec-6-ene and (3Z,6Z)-cis-9,10-epoxynonadeca-3,6-diene were identified by comparison with known standards. Of the two minor active compounds, one was tentatively identified as (3Z,6Z)-cis-9,10-epoxyhenicosa-3,6-diene, whereas the other could not be identified because of insufficient amounts in extracts. (6Z)-cis-9,10-Epoxynonadec-6-ene, (3Z,6Z)-cis-9,10-epoxynonadeca-3,6-diene, and...

Importance of semi-natural habitats for the conservation of butterfly communities in landscapes dominated Inra
Van Halder, I.; Barbaro, L.; Corcket, E.; Jactel, H..
While the area of plantation forests continues to increase worldwide, their contribution to the conservation of biodiversity is still controversial. There is a particular concern on the central role played by natural habitat remnants embedded within the plantation matrix in conserving species-rich insect communities. We surveyed butterflies in maritime pine plantation landscapes in south-western France in 83 plots belonging to seven habitat types (five successional stages of pine stands, native deciduous woodlands and herbaceous firebreaks). The effect of plot, habitat and landscape attributes on butterfly species richness, community composition and individual species were analysed with a General Linear Model (GLM), partial Canonical Correspondence...

Insect herbivory response to Populus nigra genetic diversity Inra
Augustin, S.; Denux, O.; Castagneyrol, B.; Jactel, H.; Karlinski, L.; Kieliszewska-Rokicka, B.; Lakatos, F.; Smulders, M.J.M.; Tuba, K.; Villani, F.; Villar, M..
Recent research suggests that genetic diversity in tree population may shape associated species assemblages and then drive ecosystem processes. Trees can support large numbers of insect species and some functional traits of trees have been shown to have major influence on insect communities and resultant damage. Studying the response of insect herbivorepopulations to the genetic diversity of tree populations is therefore a relevant approach to test community genetics hypotheses. The objective of our study was to evaluate how insect herbivory is affected by genotypes of Populus nigra, a dominant native poplar species in riparian forests of Europe. In a field experiment, we planted eight native P. nigra clones in plots of increasing genetic diversity with...

Kairomonal response of predators to three pine bast scale sex pheromones Inra
Branco, M.; Lettere, M.; Franco, J.C.; Binazzi, A.; Jactel, H..
The kairomonal activity of the sex pheromones of three pine bast scales, Matsucoccus feytaudi, Matsucoccus josephi, and Matsucoccus matsumurae, as well as a new analog of the M. feytaudi sex pheromone, were investigated in pine forests of France, Portugal, and Italy. The response of the maritime pine bast scale predators, Elatophilus spp. and Hemerobius stigma, was used to test the influence of trapping methods, kairomone composition, and dose. Both predators showed significant attraction to all compounds except to the sex pheromone of M. josephi. Significant increase in captures was observed as a function of dose, and within the studied dose range, up to 2200 mu g, no threshold saturation limits were observed for any of the attractive compounds. Trap...

Plantation forests and biodiversity: oxymoron or opportunity? Inra
Brockerhoff, E. G.; Jactel, H.; Parrotta, J. A.; Quine, C .P.; Sayer, J..
Losses of natural and semi-natural forests, mostly to agriculture, are a significant concern for biodiversity. Against this trend, the area of intensively managed plantation forests increases, and there is much debate about the implications for biodiversity. We provide a comprehensive review of the function of plantation forests as habitat compared with other land cover, examine the effects on biodiversity at the landscape scale, and synthesise context-specific effects of plantation forestry on biodiversity. Natural forests are usually more suitable as habitat for a wider range of native forest species than plantation forests but there is abundant evidence that plantation forests can provide valuable habitat, even for some threatened and endangered...

Relevance of exotic pine plantations as a surrogate habitat for ground beetles (Carabidae) where native forest is rare Inra
Berndt, L. A.; Brockerhoff, E. G.; Jactel, H..
Plantation forests are of increasing importance worldwide for wood and fibre production, and in some areas they are the only forest cover. Here we investigate the potential role of exotic plantations in supporting native forest-dwelling carabid beetles in regions that have experienced extensive deforestation. On the Canterbury Plains of New Zealand, more than 99% of the previous native forest cover has been lost, and today exotic pine (Pinus radiata) plantations are the only forest habitat of substantial area. Carabids were caught with pitfall traps in native kanuka (Kunzea ericoides) forest remnants and in a neighbouring pine plantation, grassland and gorse (Ulex europaeus) shrubland. A total of 2,700 individuals were caught, with significantly greater...

Species variables or environmental variables as indicators of forest biodiversity: a case study using saproxylic beetles in Maritime pine plantations Inra
Brin, A.; Brustel, H.; Jactel, H..

Terpene attractant candidates of Dioryctria sylvestrella in maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) oleoresin, needles, liber, and headspace samples Inra
Kleinhentz, M.; Jactel, H.; Menassieu, P..
Capillary GC analysis was used to determine the proportion and quantity of terpenes in wood resin, pentane extracts from needles and liber, and headspace samples of needles and pruning wounds in 24 thirteen-year-old maritime pine. Fifteen different terpenes were identified in the samples. Germacrene D and β-pinene were the dominant terpenic compounds in the needles, while α-pinene and β-pinene were dominant in the liber and wood resin. Headspace samples of both needles and pruning wounds contained essentially monoterpenes. Only trace amounts of sesquiterpenes were found in pruning wound emissions. The presence of an oxygenated compound, linalool, in the pruning wound emissions is discussed, although this compound is not found in Maritime pine essential...

Terpene variations in maritime pine constitutive oleoresin related to host tree selection by Dioryctria sylvestrella RATZ. (Lepidoptera : Pyralidae) Inra
Jactel, H.; Kleinhentz, M.; Marpeau-Bezard, A.; Marion-Poll, F.; Menassieu, P.; Burban, C..
Gas chromatographic analysis of the volatile terpenes of the wood oleoresin of maritime pines showed that the relative proportions of terpenes within the same tree did not vary according to sampling height and date. Pruning and tree vigor did not affect terpene profiles, but oleoresin composition varied widely from tree to tree. The trees attacked by Dioryctria sylvestrella contained a significantly higher percentage of limonene, longipinene, and copaene, and a discriminant analysis, using the relative percentage of six terpenes, significantly separated infested and uninfested trees. The olfactory sensitivity of adult moths to a series of 20 volatile chemicals, including maritime pine oleoresin components, was evaluated with the electroantennogram method....

Tree species diversity reduces the invasibility of maritime pine stands by the bast scale, Matsucoccus feytaudi (Homoptera : Margarodidae) Inra
Jactel, H.; Menassieu, P.; Vetillard, F.; Gaulier, A.; Samalens, J.C.; Brockerhoff, E.G..
Species-rich plant communities may be more resistant to invasive herbivores because of reduced host-plant accessibility and increased natural enemy diversity and abundance. We tested these hypotheses in Corsica, a Mediterranean island recently invaded by the maritime pine bast scale, Matsucoccus feytaudi Duc., which causes widespread tree mortality in Pinus pinaster Ait. The endemic Matsucoccus pini Green infests Corsican pine, Pinus nigra laricio Poiret, where it is controlled by the native predatory bug, Elatophilus nigricornis Zetterstedt. As revealed by kairomone trapping, E. nigricornis was most abundant in pure Corsican pine in areas not yet colonized by M. feytaudi, and in pure maritime pine its density decreased with the distance from the nearest...
