A database on plant strengthening products was established on www.bba.de. The database contains information about all plant strengthening products listed in Ger-many, in particular information about the effects in various crops, and related uses of application are provided. It informs on whether product composition complies with the guidelines of organic farming. The user has several options to browse the database: by name of plant strengthening product, individual crop (e. g. fruits or ornamental plants), harmful organism or branch of production (e. g. fruit production). A method for testing the efficacy of products which improve the resistance of plants was developed in the Julius Kühn-Institute. The susceptible radish (Raphanus sativus) cultivar ´Saxa 3` was infected with Peronospora parasitica isolated in the field. Different plant resistance improvers (PRI) like plant or algal extracts were tested compared to aqua dest. as control and ß-aminobutyric acid (BABA) as a standard. PRI were sprayed twice on intact plants (BBCH 10: Cotyledons completely unfolded; growing point or true leaf initial visible). 24 h, 48 h or 72 h after the last application with PRI, the plants were inoculated with P. parasitica. 10 to 14 days after inoculation, the concentration of spore suspension from cotyledons was determined. Im Rahmen des BLE-Forschungsprojektes „Entwicklung und Bewertung von direkten Bekämpfungsstrategien gegen das Auftreten der Möhrenschwärze (Alternaria dauci) beim Anbau von Möhren für die industrielle Verarbeitung“ (03OE488) wurde in den Jahren 2004-2006 Feldversuche zur Optimierung des ökologischen Möhrenanbaus unter norddeutschen Bedingungen durchgeführt. Sortenvergleichsanbau In den drei Jahren wurden auf den zwei Versuchsstandorten jeweils 10 bis 12 Möhrensorten auf ihre Eignung für den ökologischen Anbau geprüft. Wesentliche Kriterien waren hierbei die Widerstandsfähigkeit gegenüber Alternaria, wertgebende Inhaltstoffe und die Ertragshöhe. Teilversuch 1: Sortenvergleichsanbau mit verschiedenen z.T. ökologisch vermehrten Möhrensorten. Teil I - Standort Sudwalde Auch im zweiten Versuchsjahr zeigten sich Sortenunterschiede in der Anfälligkeit von Industriemöhrensorten gegen Möhrenschwärze (Alternaria dauci) auf dem Feld. Bei den im zweiten Jahr geprüften Sorten bestätigten sich die im Vorjahr gefundenen Tendenzen hinsichtlich der Anfälligkeiten. Ein Zusammenhang mit der – im Jahr 2005 allerdings geringen – Vorbelastung des Saatgutes mit dem Erreger konnte nur insofern gefunden werden, dass an der Sorte mit der höchsten Saatgutbelastung (Nectar) auch als erstes der stärkste Befall am Laub gefunden werden konnte. Teilversuch 1 Die Ergebnisse des ersten Versuchsjahres zeigen, dass es Unterschiede im Befall des Saatgutes mit Möhrenschwärze (Alternaria dauci) und Sortenunterschiede im Auftreten der Krankheit auf dem Feld gibt. Ob die unterschiedlichen Befallsstärken auf dem Feld auf einen unterschiedlich starken Ausgangsbefall des Saatgutes zurückzuführen sind muss weiter geprüft werden. Das Ertragspotential der Sorten war unterschiedlich, die stärksten Sorten erreichten etwa den doppelten Ertrag der schwächsten Sorte. Starke Laubschädigungen durch Alternaria führten tendenziell zu erhöhten Nitratgehalten im Erntegut. Hier kann – je nach Vermarktungsweg – eine frühere Ernte für die Praxis empfehlenswert sein. Die Biologische Bundesanstalt für Land- und Forstwirtschaft (BBA) hat im Rahmen des Bundesprogramms Ökologischer Landbau das Informationsangebot zum Thema Pflanzenschutz durch eine Datenbank über Pflanzenstärkungsmittel und deren Bereitstellung im Internet unter http://pflanzenstaerkungsmittel.bba.de erweitert. Die Datenbank ist sowohl für Praktiker, Wissenschaftler und Berater als auch für Verbraucher nutzbar und gewährleistet einen schnellen Zugriff auf alle verfügbaren Informationen wie z. B. Hot water treatment of vegetable seed – an alternative seed treatment method to control seed borne pathogens in organic farming Organic Eprints

In future, conventionally produced seed will not be allowed for organic farming. Therefore, effective non-chemical methods are needed to control seed-borne diseases. Five important vegetable crops (carrot, cabbage, celery, parsley, lamb´s lettuce) and their most important seed-borne pathogens (Alternaria spp., Phoma spp., Septoria spp., Peronospora valerianellae, Xanthomonas spp.) have been investigated in laboratory, model and field trials. Hot water treatments were made at temperatures of 40 °C and 50 to 55 °C for 10 to 30 minutes, in some cases to 60 minutes. Implementation of bioherbicides and seed treatment in organic farming Organic Eprints

The paper gives an overview over the prospects and risks of the application of bioherbicides in Organic Farming and wants to support the general acceptance by the EEC Council Regulation on Organic Production of Agricultural Products. Another problem of current importance is the maintenance of seed health. As in vegetable growing or grain cropping the seed quality is an important factor for the successful cultivation of medicinal plants and herbs. In spite of intensive efforts made by specialised seed producers there are recurring problems with important quality parameters (e.g. germination capacity, emergence or seed health). Optimisation of different physical methods for control of seed-borne pathogens in organic vegetable production Organic Eprints

In the last decade, a lot of work has been done to develop new measures or to optimise existing seed treatment methods for use in organic farming. In the field of vegetable seed protection, national research projects as well as the EU-funded project “STOVE” (“Seed Treatments for Organic Vegetable Produc-tion”) are currently carried out. Among the physical methods, hot water, humid hot air and electron treatment are being investigated. All three physical treatment methods show clear reduc-ing effects on pathogens of infested vegetable seeds. Degree of effectiveness connected with a good com-patibility depends on the treatment method and on the host-pathogen-system, but also on the cultivar and even on the seed lot.

Im ökologischen Landbau sind Arbeiten, die zur Erzeugung gesunden Saatgutes oder zur Sanierung infizierten Saatgutes beitragen, gegenwärtig von besonderer Relevanz. Das Auftreten samenbürtiger Krankheiten kann auch bei Einhaltung aller für einen hohen Herkunftswert wesentlichen acker- und pflanzenbaulichen Faktoren nicht immer verhindert werden. Die Kontrolle der Krankheiten durch eine Kombination indirekter und direkter Maßnahmen ist deshalb ein Forschungsschwerpunkt. Die hier beschriebenen Arbeiten konzentrieren sich auf die im ökologischen Getreidebau wichtigste Krankheit, den Weizensteinbrand (Tilletia caries). With the aim to evaluate the effectiveness of techniques and measures for control of cereal bunts and smuts in organic farming systems, field trials were carried out in multiple locations from 2004 to 2006. The relevant fungal diseases included in the trials were common bunt (Tilletia tritici), dwarf bunt (T. controversa), loose smut (Usti-lago tritici, U. nuda), covered smut (U. hordei) and black loose smut (U. avenae). Seed-borne diseases tend to accumulate and develop into a problem after several multiplication cycles without adequate disease control.
