Akvakultur - Nye udfordringer og nye muligheder Organic Eprints
Jokumsen, Alfred.

Assessing stakeholder's experience and sensitivity on key issues for the economic growth of organic aquaculture production Organic Eprints
Lembo, Giuseppe; Jokumsen, Alfred; Spedicato, Maria Teresa; Facchini, Maria Teresa; Bitetto, Isabella.
Participatory management is widely recognised as a working method of paramount importance, based on the principles of knowledge sharing, accountability and legitimacy. Hence, it is broadly considered suitable for addressing issues related to the sustainable development of the seafood industry, and specifically, of the aquaculture system. A survey focused on the current EU regulatory framework was carried out to elicit stakeholders’ preferences, knowledge and experience on key issues for the development of organic aquaculture, supported by science-based regulations. The survey was completed by 65 stakeholders belonging to several categories, and it was supported by the implementation of the Analytic Hierarchy Process method. Stakeholders’ preferences were...

Boom in production of organic line mussels in Denmark Organic Eprints
Jokumsen, Alfred.
Organic farming of line mussels makes a significant foot print in the development of the Danish Aquaculture sector targeting 10 % of the production being organic by 2018. Currently 9 production units have been approved for a total production of some 3,500 tons/year. In particular the Danish production of line mussels is taken place in the ”Limfjorden” (North West Jutland), where the main producer currently is Seafood Limfjord in cooperation with the mussel processing company Vildsund Blue in Nykøbing Mors. The line mussels are farmed on lines and in big socks, and due to the fact that they are reared higher in the water column than wild mussels more feed is available for their growth. The natural occurring mussel fry is settling on the lines each year, and...

Boosting the quality of organic trout fry Organic Eprints
Jokumsen, Alfred.
RobustFish will strengthen the development of Danish organic trout production. According to the EU Regulation on Organic Aquaculture, the fish production shall exclusively be based on organic fry from 2016. Particularly, in organic farming, medication is only allowed within very strict limits. Therefore, the robustness of the fry to diseases is crucial. Especially, this concerns the most serious trout fry disease in Danish aquaculture, Rainbow Trout Fry Syndrome (RTFS). The robustness of the fry seems to be related to larval developmental rate and to the dietary content of specific Ω-3 fatty acids (HUFAs). Stress and RTFS tests are going to be performed to investigate if these two factors can be included in strategies to increase the robustness of the fry....

Confirmation that pulse and continuous peracetic acid administration does not disrupt the acute stress response in rainbow trout Organic Eprints
Gesto, Manuel; Liu, Dibo; Pedersen, Lars-Flemming; Meinelt, Thomas; Strauss, David L.; Jokumsen, Alfred.
Peracetic acid (PAA) is considered an eco-friendly alternative to other antimicrobial agents of common use in aquaculture. The literature suggests that fish can habituate to PAA exposure based on a reduction of the fish corticosteroid response to PAA administration after repeated exposures. If that is true, PAA would also be a good option from the point of view of fish physiology. However, stronger evidence is needed to confirm that the use of PAA is welfare-friendly to fish. Besides habituation, other hypothetical factors such as desensitization, physiological exhaustion or PAA-mediated endocrine disruption could potentially explain the reduction in the corticosteroid response after repeated/prolonged PAA exposure. In this study, rainbow trout that had...

Costs and benefits of farming fish with selected behavioural and physiological traits Organic Eprints
Skov, Peter Vilhelm; Gregersen, Joao de Jesus; Jokumsen, Alfred.
The timing with which salmonid larvae emerge from their gravel nests is considered to be associated with a particular suite of behavioural and physiological traits. In aquaculture, traits of interest to production include aggressiveness, dominance and resilience to stress. The earliest emerging fraction is generally considered to possess these traits, and fish in this fraction may be perceived as being more robust. It is speculated that there may be advantages to selectively farm fish that are more robust, particularly if feed utilization is improved and disease is less prevalent. In the present study a series of experiments were performed, with the purpose of characterising behavioural, metabolic and production related traits in rainbow trout juveniles....

Crosstalk between Innate Immunity and Circadian Rhythm: Do fish immune defences have a sense of time? Organic Eprints
Lazado, Carlo Cabacang; Lund, Ivar; Skov, Peter V.; Jokumsen, Alfred; Gesto, Manuel; Nguyen, Huy Quang; Pedersen, Per Bovbjerg.
Circadian rhythms established by the endogenous clocks enable organisms to anticipate periodic and cyclic changes in their environment. This internal time-keeping system is highly conserved amongst animals and provides them with adaptive advantages as biological processes can be scheduled to occur at the most crucial times of the day. Circadian rhythm is emerging as an important regulator of immune functions. However, there is a paucity of information on the influence of this biological phenomenon in the immune mechanisms of teleost fish. A series of studies was conducted to investigate the circadian rhythms of systemic and mucosal innate immunity using model (i.e., zebrafish, Danio rerio) and non-model (i.e., permit, Trachinotus falcatus; rainbow trout,...

Denmark – European champion in organic rainbow trout Organic Eprints
Larsen, Erling P.; Nielsen, Max; Larsen, Villy J.; Jokumsen, Alfred.
In 2014 Denmark was the biggest producer of organic rainbow trout in Europe with a total amount of 1,080 tons. The producers of the organic trout had a better economic earning than the conventional producers, measured per unit produced. The value wason average 8 % higher per unit than for the conventional producers. The solvency ratio was in 2012 an average of 28 %, which was higher than the traditional trout producers’ solvency ratio (solvency ratio measure an enterprises ability to meet its debt and other obligations). The Danish producers and processing industry are now in the front on the organic trout market. The Danish producers of organic trout are now able to keep a constant supply throughout the year. The variety of products has been increased...

Dietary fatty acids and robustness of rainbow trout fry Organic Eprints
Lund, Ivar; Jokumsen, Alfred.
The Organic Regulation of fish farming states strong limitations on the sourcing of protein and fat ingredients in organic feed, i.e. aiming to phase out fish oil (FO) obtained from wild fish stocks and this may lead to a higher inclusion of other oils, especially vegetable oils (VO) as these are widely used. Several studies have been carried out to investigate the possibility of using plant-based diets in rearing fish. Only very few of them have challenged start feeding fish with diets in which both fishmeal (FM) and FO have been substituted, while studies on larger grow out fish have shown that a combined replacement of FM and fish oil (FO) is feasible without detrimental effects in growth performance when the theoretical requirements for essential...

Digestibility in selected rainbow trout families and modelling of growth from the specific intake of digestible protein Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Richard; Jokumsen, Alfred.
The experiments aimed to clarify variations in digestibility of dietary nutrients in rainbow trout. Furthermore, the objective was to study how differences in digestibility might be related to growth and feed utilisation at various growth rates. When comparing the results from the experiments it appeared that particularly protein digestibility was closely related to specific growth rate and feed conversion ratio at high growth rates. As a tool to visualise the relationship between protein digestibility and growth of rainbow trout a growth model was developed based on the specific intake of digestible protein, and general assumptions on protein content and protein retention efficiency in rainbow trout. The model indicated that increased protein...

Effects of organic plant oils and role of oxidation on nutrient utilization in juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Organic Eprints
Lund, Ivar; Dalsgaard, Johanne; Hansen, Jonea Høeg; Jacobsen, Charlotte; Holm, Jørgen; Jokumsen, Alfred.
The study compared the effect of four either fresh or force oxidized organic plant oils in diets for juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in which 47% of conventional LT fish meal protein was substituted by a mixture of 3 organic plant protein concentrates. Fish oil was completely substituted with either organic linseed oil; rape seed oil; sunflower oil or grape seed oil and evaluated based on feed intake, feed utilization, growth and digestibility. None of the plant oils affected feed intake and growth parameters. Organic plant oils had all a positive effect on lipid digestibility as compared with the fish oil based control diet, despite the very different FA profiles. The organic vegetable oils did not undergo autoxidation, as opposed to the fish...

Emergence time and skin melanin spot patterns do not correlate with growth performance, social competitive ability or stress response in farmed rainbow trout Organic Eprints
Gesto, Manuel; Skov, Peter V.; Jokumsen, Alfred.
In wild salmonid fish, specific individual behavioral traits have been correlated with the timing of fry emergence from their gravel spawning nests; Early emerging fish display more aggressive behavior and have a higher probability of becoming socially dominant, compared to fish that emerge at a later stage. Apart from aggression and dominance, other behavioral and metabolic traits, such as boldness, metabolic rate, or growth, have also been linked to emergence time. Altogether, the traits of early- and late-emerging fish resemble those of the proactive and reactive stress-coping style, respectively. As proactive fish are considered more resilient to stress, it may be desirable to select these for aquaculture production. However, it is currently unclear to...

Fatty acid manipulation of rainbow trout fry Organic Eprints
Lund, Ivar; Jokumsen, Alfred.
The EU regulation (EC 710/2009) on Organic Aquaculture states that the principles of organic rearing shall include the whole trout production cycle, i.e. the fish production shall be based on organic fry. The Organic Regulation of fish farming states strong limitations on the sourcing of protein and fat ingredients in organic feed, i.e. aiming to phase out fish oil obtained from wild fish stocks and this may lead to a higher inclusion of other oils, especially vegetable oils as these are widely used. The main difference between vegetable oils (VO) and fish oils (FO) is related to the content of so called long chain essential n-3 (previously denoted Ω-3) and n-6 (previously denoted Ω-6) polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC- PUFAs). These are main constituents...

FEED REQUIREMENTS IN ORGANIC AQUACULTURE Organic Eprints
Jokumsen, Alfred; Lembo, Giuseppe.
Feed costs account for more than half of the production costs in aquaculture. In particular this concerns organic aquaculture, which has to comply with specific rules for sourcing feed ingredients for organic feed. Thus, specific rules on feeds for carnivorous aquaculture animals request that the feed shall be sourced with the following priorities (EU Reg. 710/2009 art. 25k, as amended by EU Reg. 1358/2014): (a) organic feed products of aquaculture origin; (b) fish meal and fish oil from organic aquaculture trimmings; (c) fish meal and fish oil and ingredients of fish origin derived from trimmings of fish already caught for human consumption in sustainable fisheries; (d) organic feed materials of plant origin and of animal origin; (e) feed products...

Flere økologiske fisk Organic Eprints
Jokumsen, Alfred.

Jokumsen, Alfred; Larsen, Villy Juul.

Jokumsen, Alfred.
