Akvakultur - Nye udfordringer og nye muligheder Organic Eprints

Efter en årrække med nationale standarder indførtes et fælles EU regelsæt for økologisk akvakultur d. 1. juli 2010. EU forordningen for økologisk akvakultur rummer et udfordrende regelsæt for de økologiske dambrugere. Derfor forudsætter udvikling og udbygning af den økologiske fiskeproduktion i Danmark en styrket forskningsindsats i forhold til bl.a. foder og ernæring, miljø, produktionsforhold, sundhed og kvalitet. Denne indsats skal bl.a. sigte på at tilpasse produktionen til den nye EU forordning for akvakultur samt øge og effektivisere produktionen af økologiske fisk inden for gældende dansk miljølovgivning på akvakulturområdet.

Assessing stakeholder's experience and sensitivity on key issues for the economic growth of organic aquaculture production Organic Eprints

Participatory management is widely recognised as a working method of paramount importance, based on the principles of knowledge sharing, accountability and legitimacy. Hence, it is broadly considered suitable for addressing issues related to the sustainable development of the seafood industry, and specifically, of the aquaculture system. A survey focused on the current EU regulatory framework was carried out to elicit stakeholders’ preferences, knowledge and experience on key issues for the development of organic aquaculture, supported by science-based regulations. Boom in Production of Organic Line Mussels in Denmark Organic Eprints

Organic farming of line mussels makes a significant footprint in the development of the Danish Aquaculture sector, targeting 10 percent of the production being organic by 2018. Currently nine production units have been approved for a total production of some 3,500 t/yr. Danish production of line mussels takes place in the Limfjorden (North West Jutland), where the main producer currently is Seafood Limfjord in cooperation with the mussel processing company Vildsund Blue in Nykøbing Mors. Mussels are farmed on lines and in big socks and, because they are reared closer to the surface than wild mussels, more algae and other seston is available to support growth. Boosting the quality of organic trout fry Organic Eprints

RobustFish will strengthen the development of Danish organic trout production. According to the EU Regulation on Organic Aquaculture, the fish production shall exclusively be based on organic fry from 2016. Particularly, in organic farming, medication is only allowed within very strict limits. Therefore, the robustness of the fry to diseases is crucial. Especially, this concerns the most serious trout fry disease in Danish aquaculture, Rainbow Trout Fry Syndrome (RTFS). The robustness of the fry seems to be related to larval developmental rate and to the dietary content of specific Ω-3 fatty acids (HUFAs). Confirmation that pulse and continuous peracetic acid administration does not disrupt the acute stress response in rainbow trout Organic Eprints

Peracetic acid (PAA) is considered an eco-friendly alternative to other antimicrobial agents of common use in aquaculture. The literature suggests that fish can habituate to PAA exposure based on a reduction of the fish corticosteroid response to PAA administration after repeated exposures. If that is true, PAA would also be a good option from the point of view of fish physiology. However, stronger evidence is needed to confirm that the use of PAA is welfare-friendly to fish. Besides habituation, other hypothetical factors such as desensitization, physiological exhaustion or PAA-mediated endocrine disruption could potentially explain the reduction in the corticosteroid response after repeated/prolonged PAA exposure. Costs and benefits of farming fish with selected behavioural and physiological traits Organic Eprints

The timing with which salmonid larvae emerge from their gravel nests is considered to be associated with a particular suite of behavioural and physiological traits. In aquaculture, traits of interest to production include aggressiveness, dominance and resilience to stress. The earliest emerging fraction is generally considered to possess these traits, and fish in this fraction may be perceived as being more robust. It is speculated that there may be advantages to selectively farm fish that are more robust, particularly if feed utilization is improved and disease is less prevalent. Denmark – European champion in organic rainbow trout Organic Eprints

In 2014 Denmark was the biggest producer of organic rainbow trout in Europe with a total amount of 1,080 tons. The producers of the organic trout had a better economic earning than the conventional producers, measured per unit produced. The value wason average 8 % higher per unit than for the conventional producers. The solvency ratio was in 2012 an average of 28 %, which was higher than the traditional trout producers’ solvency ratio (solvency ratio measure an enterprises ability to meet its debt and other obligations). Digestibility in selected rainbow trout families and modelling of growth from the specific intake of digestible protein Organic Eprints

The experiments aimed to clarify variations in digestibility of dietary nutrients in rainbow trout. Furthermore, the objective was to study how differences in digestibility might be related to growth and feed utilisation at various growth rates. When comparing the results from the experiments it appeared that particularly protein digestibility was closely related to specific growth rate and feed conversion ratio at high growth rates. Effects of organic plant oils and role of oxidation on nutrient utilization in juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Organic Eprints

The study compared the effect of four either fresh or force oxidized organic plant oils in diets for juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in which 47% of conventional LT fish meal protein was substituted by a mixture of 3 organic plant protein concentrates. Fish oil was completely substituted with either organic linseed oil; rape seed oil; sunflower oil or grape seed oil and evaluated based on feed intake, feed utilization, growth and digestibility. None of the plant oils affected feed intake and growth parameters. In wild salmonid fish, specific individual behavioral traits have been correlated with the timing of fry emergence from their gravel spawning nests; Early emerging fish display more aggressive behavior and have a higher probability of becoming socially dominant, compared to fish that emerge at a later stage. Apart from aggression and dominance, other behavioral and metabolic traits, such as boldness, metabolic rate, or growth, have also been linked to emergence time. Altogether, the traits of early- and late-emerging fish resemble those of the proactive and reactive stress-coping style, respectively. Forskning i planteproteiner til økologisk fiskefoder Organic Eprints

Den primære proteinkilde i foder til økologiske fisk er fiskemel. Da fiskemel er en begrænset ressource og samtidig ikke er økologisk er der brug for alternativer i form af økologiske vegetabilske proteinkilder. Forskningen er således rettet mod at udskifte en del af fiskemelet med planteprotein bl.a. ved at optimere de økologiske proteinafgrøder med fokus på de mest kritiske områder i kæden, der forbinder økologisk foderproduktion, økologisk fiskeopdræt og forbrugeren.
