125000 ans d'enregistrements récifaux des stagnations du niveau de la mer dans l'Océan Indien (Archipel des Glorieuses) ArchiMer
Jorry, Stephan; Jouet, Gwenael; Le Roy, Pascal; Prat, Sophie; Camoin, Gilbert; Vella, Claude; Caline, Bruno.

A Computer-Assisted Method for Depositional Model Determination ArchiMer
Ndiaye, Mapathe; Davaud, Eric; Jorry, Stephan.
A software has been developed to overcome the difficulties related to depositional model determination in Geosciences. The implemented methods, Walker, Harper and Turk methods, based on Markov process and Markov chain analysis, have been used in a case study. The results of the analysis are consistent with previous works. The analysis shows also that the results are accurate and do not rely on the used method. Therefore, the obtained depositional sequence is suitable to build a depositional model on which reliable sequence stratigraphic studies can be based.

A Late Quaternary record of highstand shedding from an isolated carbonate platform (Juan de Nova, southern Indian Ocean) ArchiMer
Counts, John; Jorry, Stephan; Vazquez Riveiros, Natalia; Jouet, Gwenael; Giraudeau, Jacques; Cheron, Sandrine; Boissier, Audrey; Miramontes, Elda.
A 27 m core collected on the seafloor near Juan de Nova island at 1909 m depth in the SW Indian Ocean preserves a high‐resolution record of carbonate sediment export to the deep sea over the past 1 Myr. Core chronology was established using calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy and benthic foraminiferal δ18O. Throughout the core, preserved highstand intervals (MIS 1, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 23 and 25) are marked by an increase in the aragonite content within the sediment. Aragonite is likely sourced from the nearby Juan de Nova carbonate platform ~10 km to the south, and is interpreted to result from flooding of the platform top. Platform inundation allows carbonate muds to be winnowed from their original shallow‐water environment of deposition, suspended in...

A Pliocene–Quaternary analogue for ancient epeiric carbonate settings: The Malita intrashelf basin (Bonaparte Basin, northwest Australia) ArchiMer
Courgeon, Simon; Bourget, Julien; Jorry, Stephan.
During the Plio-Quaternary, the Bonaparte Basin is characterized by a very wide (> 600 km, > 370 mi) carbonate platform and 200 km-wide (125 mi-wide) intra-shelf basin (the Malita ISB). Using 3D and 2D seismic data combined with exploration well data, this study characterizes the stratigraphic evolution of the Malita ISB during the last 3.5 million years. Two third-order transgressive sequences can be distinguished. A late Pliocene transgression occurred over an irregular topography resulting from the flexural reactivation of the Malita graben. In the centre of the intra-shelf basin, carbonate aggradation resulted in the formation of isolated carbonate platforms separated by deeper water seaways and inter-platform areas. Wider and more numerous...

Are deep-sea ecosystems surrounding Madagascar threatened by land-use or climate change? ArchiMer

In this short communication, we present a multidisciplinaty study of sedimentary records collected from a deep-sea interfluve proximal to the mouths of major northwestern Madagascan rivers. For the last 60 years, the seafloor has been repeatedly disturbed by the deposition of organic rich, tropical, terrestrial sediments causing marked reductions in benthic biodiversity. Increased soil erosion due to local land-use, deforestation and intensifying tropical cyclones are potential causes for this sedimentary budget and biodiversity shift. Our marine sedimentary records indicate that until now, these conditions have not occurred within the region for at least 20,000 years.

Controls on the distribution of nummulite facies: A case study from the late Ypresian El Garia Formation (Kesra Plateau, Central Tunisia) ArchiMer
Jorry, Stephan; Davaud, E; Caline, B.
Eocene nummulite deposits along the southern Tethys margin locally constitute important hydrocarbon reservoir rocks. In order to understand the heterogeneity of these complex reservoirs, we have carried out a detailed field study of the nummulite limestones which crop out at the Kesra Plateau in Central Tunisia. The main contributions of this paper can be summarised as follows: 1. Various species of Nummulites and planktonic foraminifera were identified in late Ypresian carbonates in the Kesra area and provided accurate biostratigraphic ages. Nummulitic limestones occur in the Chouabine and El Garia Formations representing deposition over a period of about 2Ma. 2. Six depositional facies have been identified in the El Garia Formation, ranging from...

Deepwater carbonate deposition in response to re-flooding of carbonate bank and atoll-tops at glacial terminations ArchiMer
Jorry, Stephan; Droxler, Andre W.; Francis, Jason M..
The late Quaternary has experienced large glacial/interglacial climatic variations and related 10's to 100 meters high-amplitude sea level fluctuations at Milankovich frequencies from 10's to 100 kyr during which carbonate platform tops have been exposed and re-flooded in many occasions. This study focuses on the accumulation of calci-turbidites, the aragonite onset/sharp increase in fine sediments and their timing in deep basins adjacent to carbonate platforms. A particular emphasis is developed on the occurrence of the first gravity flow event and aragonite onset/sharp increase and their linkage to the initial re-flooding of the platform tops during deglaciations. Three basins adjacent to isolated platforms in the Bahamas, the Northern Nicaragua Rise,...

Direct sediment transfer from land to deep-sea: Insights into shallow multibeam bathymetry at La Réunion Island ArchiMer
Babonneau, Nathalie; Delacourt, Christophe; Cancouet, R.; Sisavath, Emmanuelle; Bachelery, Patrick; Mazuel, Aude; Jorry, Stephan; Deschamps, Anne; Ammann, Jerome; Villeneuve, N..
Submarine canyon heads are key areas for understanding the triggering factors of gravity currents responsible for the transfer of detrital sediment to the deep basins. This contribution offers a detailed picture of canyon heads off La Réunion Island, with high-resolution multibeam bathymetry in the water depth range of 4–220 m. The present feeding of the Cilaos turbidite system, one of the largest modern volcaniclastic systems in the world, is deduced from morphological and sedimentological interpretations of newly acquired data. The study highlights small-scale sedimentary features indicating hydrodynamic and sedimentary processes. A direct connexion between the Saint-Etienne river mouth and submarine canyons is evidenced by the complete incision of the...

Evolution of Late Oligocene - Early Miocene attached and isolated carbonate platforms in a volcanic ridge context (Maldives type), Yadana field, offshore Myanmar ArchiMer
Paumard, Victorien; Zuckmeyer, Eric; Boichard, Robert; Jorry, Stephan; Bourget, Julien; Borgomano, Jean; Maurin, Thomas; Ferry, Jean-noel.
This study investigates the stratigraphic evolution of the Late Oligocene - Early Miocene carbonate platforms of the Yadana area (offshore Myanmar). Well data, regional 2D and local 3D seismic surveys allow the identification of three shallow-water carbonate platforms (Yadana, 3DF and 3DE) showing various morphologic and stratigraphic patterns influenced by the presence of a paleohigh. The identification of seven seismic sequences in the Yadana area constrains the stratigraphic evolution in three stages: (1) development of aggrading attached and isolated platforms during the Chattian; (2) a period of platform emersion during the Oligocene - Miocene transition; (3) drowning of the smaller buildup (3DE) associated with km-scale backstepping on the large...

Evolution of the Danube Deep-Sea Fan since the Last Glacial Maximum: insights into water level fluctuations in the Black Sea ArchiMer
Constantinescu, Adriana; Toucanne, Samuel; Dennielou, Bernard; Jorry, Stephan; Panin, Nicolae; Lericolais, Gilles.
The Danube deep-sea fan is one of the most extensive deep-sea sedimentary systems in Europe. It lies in the base of slope of the north-western margin of the Black Sea, in front of Viteaz Canyon. Since the work of Popescu (2002) the detailed morphology and architecture of the fan is well known. During lowstand periods, the fan was fed by the Viteaz Canyon, which was directly connected to the Danube River. The fan has developed an impressive channel-levees network which is characterized by seven major channel avulsions (Popescu, 2002, Lericolais et al., 2013). Despite the numerous sedimentary cores retrieved during the Blason (1998, 2002) and Assemblage (2004) oceanographic cruises, the details of the factors controlling the turbiditic activity of the Danube...

Evolution of the danube deep-sea fan since the last glacial maximum: New insights into Black Sea water-level fluctuations ArchiMer
Constantinescu, Adriana; Toucanne, Samuel; Dennielou, Bernard; Jorry, Stephan; Mulder, T.; Lericolais, Gilles.
The Danube Deep-Sea Fan (NW Black Sea) is one of the most developed deep-sea sediment depositional systems in Europe. Although the morphology and the architecture have been widely described in the past years, little is known about the stratigraphy of this depositional system. For the late Quaternary, this results from the lack of significant stratigraphic markers, the scarcity of radiocarbon ages and the difficulty in constraining reservoir ages. Recent robust quantification of reservoir ages has allowed the construction of a new stratigraphic framework for the Black Sea from the end of the last glacial period to the Holocene, thus giving the opportunity to correlate sedimentological and geochemical features previously described on the NW Black Sea margin...

External controls on turbidite sedimentation on the glacially-influenced Armorican margin (Bay of Biscay, western European margin) ArchiMer
Toucanne, Samuel; Zaragosi, Sebastien; Bourillet, Jean-francois; Dennielou, Bernard; Jorry, Stephan; Jouet, Gwenael; Cremer, Michel.
Sequence stratigraphic models predict increased sediment delivery to deep-water areas during sea-level lowstand. The Armorican margin (Bay of Biscay, western European margin) is an interesting area to test this hypothesis because the margin has a wide continental shelf, still partly flooded during sea-level lowstand, and the Armorican turbidite system has experienced fluctuating sediment fluxes since the last glacial period. The stratigraphic response of the Armorican turbidite system to sea-level oscillations and climate changes was assessed for the last 35,000 years through the study of the Guilcher, Crozon and Audierne levees. Millenial-timescale resolution chronostratigraphy allowed us to reconstruct the sediment accumulation and turbidite frequency,...

Géomorphologie et sédimentologie d'une plate-forme carbonatée isolée: l'Archipel des Glorieuses, SO Océan Indien ArchiMer
Prat, Sophie; Jorry, Stephan; Jouet, Gwenael; Le Roy, Pascal; Camoin, Gilbert; Vella, Claude; Caline, Bruno.

Geomorphology and sedimentology of a modern isolated carbonate platform: The glorieuses archipelago, SW Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Prat, Sophie; Jorry, Stephan; Jouet, Gwenael; Camoin, Gilbert; Vella, Claude; Le Roy, Pascal; Caline, Bruno; Boichard, Robert; Pastol, Yves.
The study of modern carbonate systems is commonly helps in improving facies interpretation in fossil reefs and in providing analogues of sediment distribution depending on the specific platform configuration (i.e. rimmed shelves and isolated carbonate platforms). This paper deals with a geomorphological and sedimentological study of the Glorieuses Archipelago, an isolated carbonate platform located between the northern tip of Madagascar and Mayotte. The dataset consists of Digital Terrain Model, satellite imagery, and box-sediment samples. Analyses of grain-size and composition of carbonate grains are used to characterize the distribution and heterogeneity of sediment accumulated on the isolated platform. Main results show that the Glorieuses Archipelago...

Glacial erosion dynamics in a small mountainous watershed (Southern French Alps): A source-to-sink approach ArchiMer
Bonneau, Lucile; Toucanne, Samuel; Bayon, Germain; Jorry, Stephan; Emmanuel, Laurent; Silva Jacinto, Ricardo.
In this study we used major element composition, neodymium isotopes ratios (εNdεNd) and concentration of REE to track and quantify the sediment routing in the Var sedimentary system from source (Southern French Alps) to sink (Ligurian Sea) over the last 50 ka. Our data reveal that changes in sediment sources over that period, associated with concomitant changes in the hyperpycnal (i.e. flood-generated turbidity currents) activity in the Var submarine canyon, were mainly driven by paleoenvironmental conditions in the upper basin and in particular by the presence of glaciers during the last glacial period. Based on this evidence, we determined when and how glacier-derived sediments were produced, then excavated and transferred to the ocean, allowing us to...

Growth and demise of Cenozoic isolated carbonate platforms: New insights from the Mozambique Channel seamounts (SW Indian Ocean) ArchiMer
Courgeon, Simon; Jorry, Stephan; Camoin, G. F.; Boudagher-fadel, M. K.; Jouet, Gwenael; Revillon, Sidonie; Bachelery, P.; Pelleter, Ewan; Borgomano, J.; Poli, E.; Droxler, A. W..
Although long-term evolutions of isolated shallow-water carbonate platforms and demise episodes leading to guyot formation have been the subject of numerous studies during the last decades, their driving processes are still the subject of active debates. The Mozambique Channel (SW Indian Ocean) is characterized by several flat-topped seamounts ranging from 11°S to 21°S in latitudes. Based on a comprehensive geomorphologic study and on dredged samples analysis, we show that these features correspond to tropical isolated shallow-water carbonate platforms. Coupling strontium isotopy and foraminifera biostratigraphy, well-constrained chronostratigraphy results indicate that shallow-water carbonate production started in the Mozambique Channel during distinct...

Hydrodynamic behaviour of Nummulites: implications for depositional models ArchiMer
Jorry, Stephan; Hasler, Ca; Davaud, E.
Large benthic foraminifers are considered to be good indicators of shallow marine carbonate environments in fossil series. Over the last 50 years, the palaeoenvironment of Tertiary Nummulites accumulations has been a matter of debate, particularly because of difficulties in interpreting these deposits, and in this way, the absence of analogues in present-day seas does not help. The aim of this paper is to insight the different ways Nummulites tests and clasts may accumulate according to their hydrodynamic behaviour. Based on experimental measurements and on SEM observations, it appears that the high primary skeletal porosity of Nummulites made them easily transportable. The calculated threshold shear velocities confirm that large-sized Nummulites can be...

Impact of tectonic and volcanism on the Neogene evolution of isolated carbonate platforms (SW Indian Ocean) ArchiMer
Courgeon, Simon; Jorry, Stephan; Jouet, Gwenael; Camoin, G.; Boudagher-fadel, M. K.; Bachelery, P.; Caline, B.; Boichard, R.; Revillon, Sidonie; Thomas, Yannick; Thereau, Estelle; Guerin, Charline.
Understanding the impact of tectonic activity and volcanism on long-term (i.e. millions years) evolution of shallow-water carbonate platforms represents a major issue for both industrial and academic perspectives. The southern central Mozambique Channel is characterized by a 100 km-long volcanic ridge hosting two guyots (the Hall and Jaguar banks) and a modern atoll (Bassas da India) fringed by a large terrace. Dredge sampling, geophysical acquisitions and submarines videos carried out during recent oceanographic cruises revealed that submarine flat-top seamounts correspond to karstified and drowned shallow-water carbonate platforms largely covered by volcanic material and structured by a dense network of normal faults. Microfacies and well-constrained...

Inferring denudation variations from the sediment record; an example of the last glacial cycle record of the Golo Basin and watershed, East Corsica, western Mediterranean sea ArchiMer

Geophysical data and sampling of the Golo Basin (East Corsica margin) provide the opportunity to study mass balance in a single drainage system over the last 130 kyr, by comparing deposited sediments in the sink and the maximum eroded volume in the source using total denudation proxies. Evaluation of the solid sediments deposited offshore and careful integration of uncertainties from the age model and physical properties allow us to constrain three periods of sedimentation during the last climatic cycle. The peak of sedimentation initiated during Marine Isotopic Stage (MIS) 3 (ca. 45 ka) and lasted until late in MIS 2 (ca. 18 ka). This correlates with Mediterranean Sea palaeoclimatic records and the glaciation in high altitude Corsica. The yield of solid...
