Parameter estimation for complex process models used in agronomy or the environmental sciences is important, because it is a major determinant of model redictive power, and difficult, because the models and associated data are complex. Statistics provides guidance for parameter estimation under various assumptions concerning model error, but it is hard to know which assumptions are most acceptable for these models. We therefore propose a collection of parameter estimation methods. All are based on weighted least squares, but different assumptions lead to different weights. Low-input production schemes adopted in organic or conventional farms require crop varieties that combine good product quality and high yield stability under non optimal environmental conditions (Gooding et al., 1999). These traits are not yet found among the durum wheat genotypes available in France. Consequently the cultivation of this crop is hardly successful in stockless organic farms in southern France, which are characterised by very low nitrogen resources. Comparaison des dynamiques d'apparition et de mortalite des organes de fetuque elevee, dactyle et luzerne (feuilles, talles et tiges) Inra

Trois espèces fourragères (fétuque élevée, dactyle et luzerne) sont cultivées en conditions hydrique et azotée non limitantes. Les rythmes d’apparition et de sénescence des feuilles, ainsi que les dynamiques d’évolution des nombres de talles et tiges, sont comparés pour plusieurs repousses (une de printemps et 2 estivales pour les graminées, 3 estivales et une automnale pour la luzerne). Nous montrons que les phyllochrones moyens sont de 83 °C.j(degrés-jours) pour la luzerne, 188 pour le dactyle et 253 pour la fétuque élevée. Pour toutes les espèces, on observe une augmentation régulière du phyllochrone au cours d’une repousse. L’objectif du travail est de trouver des systèmes de culture durables pour produire en AB des rendements de blé réguliers et de bon niveau avec une teneur en protéines satisfaisante. Notre démarche repose sur une valorisation optimale des ressources naturelles en azote provenant de la minéralisation du sol et de la fixation symbiotique. D’une part, des cultures intermédiaires ont été semées en été et enfouies avant le semis du blé réalisé en novembre afin de limiter les pertes hivernales d’azote nitrique. D’autre part, le blé a été cultivé en association avec une légumineuse à graines (pois ou fèverole d’hiver). Predicting the impact of irrigation practices on soil N mineralization and N balance is an important issue to optimize N fertilization and reduce the N losses towards the environment. The effect of summer irrigation on N dynamics was investigated in two arable fields in Southern France. Net N mineralization was assessed by combining frequent measurements of water and mineral N contents in soil and the use of a calculation model (LIXIM). It was first calculated assuming that denitrification was negligible. Nitrogen acquisition and grain protein concentration (GPC) of durum wheat is often a major concern, particulary in low input systems where mineral N is a limited resorce.In this present paper we asessed the hypothesis that the performance of durum wheat and winter pea, grown in intercrop (IC) is better than in sole crops (SC) for their ability to improve the use of N resources. Field experiment was carried out in SW France in 2005-200 wit three fertiliser-N supply: no fertiliser (NO), 100 kg N ha-1 (N100), and 180 kg N ha-1 (N180). Labile pools of organic matter: are they good indicators for in situ soil N minéralisation? Inra

The ability of various potentiel indicators to predict soil N mineralisation in field conditions was tested on 53 unfertilised arable crop fields distributed all over France. In situ N mineralisation wasdetermined with a calculation model using frequent measurements of soil mineral N and water content. On the ploughed layer (0-30 depth), soil organic C (SOC) and N (SON), microbial biomass C, light (>50 um) and heavy (<5O um) organic matter fractions and labile organic carbon or nitrogen(LOC or LON), obtained by autoclaving or tetraborate extraction, were measured. LON extracted by autoclaving showed the best correlatio with in situ N mineralisation (R2 = 0.47), followed by LOC extracted by autoclaving(r2 = 0.46), SON (R2 = 0.43) and SOC (R2 = 0.35)....

Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions of three different soils – a rendzina on cryoturbed soil, a hydromorphic leached brown soil and a superficial soil on a calcareous plateau – were measured using the chamber method. Each site included four types of land management: bare soil, seeded unfertilized soil, a suboptimally fertilized rapeseed crop and an overfertilized rapeseed crop. Fluxes varied from –1g to 100g N2O-nitrogen ha–1 day–1. The highest rates of N2O emissions were measured during spring on the hydromorphic leached brown soil which had been fertilized with nitrogen (N); the total emissions during a 5-month period exceeded 3500gNha–1. Prediction of in situ soil nitrogen mineralisation using artificial neural networks: a promising way to improve model accuracy Inra

The ability of artificial nural networ (ANN) to predict soil N mineralisation in fiels conditions using simple soil characteristics was tested on 74 unfertilised arable crop fields distributed all over France. In situ N mineralisation of soil mineral N and water contents. The ANN method used was the multilayer feed forward neuronal network trained by back propagation algorithm. A set of 56 sites was selected for ANN imput variables (clay content, log transformed CaCO3 content, organic N stock on 30 cm depht and soil pH) explained 62% of in situ N mineralisation rate of the training dataset without bias. C and N mineralization kinetics of 25 catch crop (CC) residues, whose organic C:N ratio varied from 9.5 to 34.0, were studied during soil incubations under controlled conditions. Decomposition rates were rather similar for the different CC residues, 59% to 68% residue-C being mineralized after 168 days incubation. C mineralized during the first weeks was mainly correlated to the soluble C content of the residue. N mineralized from CC residues was much more variable (−4.9 to +38.0 mg N g−1 added C at day 168), and was mainly related to the organic N content in residues. La base de données CORD (Châlons Oilseed Rape Database) archive les résultats d’une expérience intensive conduite en région Champagne sur la dynamique des flux d’eau, de carbone et d’azote dans un système sol-plante, à l’échelle de la parcelle agricole. L’expérience a débuté au semis d’une culture de colza (Brassica napus L.) en septembre 1994, et a duré jusqu’à la récolte de celui-ci en juillet 1995. Trois traitements azotés, ainsi qu’un témoin en sol nu ont été suivis, et le sol était une rendzine sur craie à poches de ryoturbation.
