Arthropod pest management in organic crops Organic Eprints
Zehnder, Geoff; Gurr, Geoff M.; Kühne, Stefan; Wade, Mark R.; Wratten, Steve D.; Wyss, Eric.
Burgeoning consumer interest in organically produced foods has made organic farming one of the fastest growing segments of agriculture. This growth has not been supported adequately by rigorous research to address challenges such as arthropod pest management. The research that has been conducted, however, is complemented by research in aspects of conventional agriculture that may have applicability in organic systems, as well as by research in underpinning fields such as applied ecology. This article synthesizes the available literature in relation to a conceptual model of arthropod pest management strategies suitable for organic systems. The present work uses the four phases of the model to review the strategies in an agroecological context and provides a...

Efficacy of biological insecticides to control the Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotasara decemlineata) in organic farming Organic Eprints
Kühne, Stefan; Reelfs, Torben; Ellmer, Frank; Moll, Eckard; Kleinhenz, Benno; Gemmer, Christine.
The Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotasara decemlineata Say) is one of the most important pests on potatoes (Solanum tuberosum). In the present study, we compared the efficacy of three biological insecticides – Neem (NeemAzal-T/S), pyrethrum/rapeseed oil (Spruzit Neu) and Bacillus thuringiensis var. tenebrionis (Novodor FC) – against this pest in field trials conducted from 2005 to 2007. The combined and temporarily shifted application of neem and B.t.t. reduced significantly the number of beetle larvae and the percentage of defoliation due to larval feeding, and increased the potato yield considerably. The SIMLEP3 forecasting model is useful for determining the optimal timing of the treatment. Pyrethrum/rapeseed oil did not lead to a significant reduction...

Marx, Peggy; Kühne, Stefan; Jahn, Marga; Makulla, Alexandra.
A method for testing the efficacy of products which improve the resistance of plants was developed in the Julius Kühn-Institute. The susceptible radish (Raphanus sativus) cultivar ´Saxa 3` was infected with Peronospora parasitica isolated in the field. Different plant resistance improvers (PRI) like plant or algal extracts were tested compared to aqua dest. as control and ß-aminobutyric acid (BABA) as a standard. PRI were sprayed twice on intact plants (BBCH 10: Cotyledons completely unfolded; growing point or true leaf initial visible). 24 h, 48 h or 72 h after the last application with PRI, the plants were inoculated with P. parasitica. 10 to 14 days after inoculation, the concentration of spore suspension from cotyledons was determined. The efficacy of...

Gilbert, Katja; Probst, Peter; Bachinger, Johann; Bloch, Ralf; Kühne, Stefan; Vogt-Kaute, Werner.

Minimising strategies for copper pesticides in organic potato cultivation Organic Eprints
Kühne, Stefan.
It can be stated that also in future a successful copper minimization strategy based on the use of all preventive measures, the further reduction of copper application rates and the development of alternative pesticides. First results of the EU project COFREE (Copper Replacement Strategies) have shown, that the high safety effect of copper-based products is difficult to achieve by alternative products. The short, medium and long-term measures for the implementation of copper minimization strategy are described in this paper. The future development potential of the measures to minimize copper in organic potato production is assessed.

Mixed cropping systems for biological control of weeds and pests in organic oilseed crops Organic Eprints
Paulsen, Hans Marten; Schochow, Martin; Ulber, B; Kühne, Stefan; Rahmann, Gerold.
Agricultural advantages of mixed cropping are gained by biological effects like light competition, offering weed-suppressing capacities or by diversification of plant covers to break development cycles of pests. In a two-year project on mixed cropping with organic oilseed crops these effects were measured. It was found that weeds can be efficiently suppressed in organic linseed (Linum usitatissivum) in crop combinations with wheat (Triticum aestivum) or false flax (Camelina sativa). But linseed development was strictly limited. Also in organic pea production (Pisum sativum) the introduction of mixtures with the oil crop false flax led to a significant decrease of weed population. Either culture showed a balanced plant development. In winter rape (Brassica...

Online determination tool for pests Organic Eprints
Preissel, Sara; Kühne, Stefan; Adler, Cornel.
Stock pests can cause severe damage to agricultural products. In addition, it is sometimes difficult to determine the pest and know what measures would be most helpful.. The online tool helps determine the pest and provides information on its biology and suitable measures. It contains data on more than 40 storage pests, and it is being expanded continuously. First, the pests can be filtered by organism group, location of infestation and infected product. Thus, only matching pests are displayed in a list. For each pest, there is a description of its appearance and biology, its pattern of damage and suitable control strategies. The tool only suggests measures that are permitted in organic farming. Therefore, it can be quite helpful for organic farmers,...

The Colorado Potato Beetle is one of the most important pests of potatoes. The effect of various plant protection products based on neem (NeemAzal-T/S), pyrethrum/rape oil (Spruzit Neu) and Bacillus thuringiensis - B.t.t. (Novodor FC) against this pest has been compared in a field experiment from 2004 until 2006. The combined application of neem and B.t.t.-product have reduced the number of Colorado Potato Beetle larvae as well as the losses of plant material by feed of the beetle larvae significantly. In three years of field experiments the application of pyrethrum/rape oil has shown no significant effect to reduce the number of Colorado Potato Beetles.

Organic agriculture can and should play an important role in solving future challenges in producing food. The low level of external inputs combined with knowledge on sustainablity minimizes environmental contamination and can help to produce more food for more people without negatively impacting our environment. Organic agriculture not only includes farming as a production practice but it also includes processing, trade and consumption. Nevertheless, Organic agriculture must always evolve to overcome emerging challenges. Science-based knowledge attained through dedicated research is required to strengthen organic food and farming as a means to solve future challenges. In 2010, a global discussion about Organic 3.0 was initiated to address current problems...
