An approach to include soil carbon changes in life cycle assessments Organic Eprints
Petersen, B.M.; Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Hermansen, J.E.; Halberg, Niels.
Globally, soil carbon sequestration is expected to hold a major potential to mitigate agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. However, the majority of life cycle assessments (LCA) of agricultural products have not included possible changes in soil carbon sequestration. In the present study, a method to estimate carbon sequestration to be included in LCA is suggested and applied to two examples where the inclusion of carbon sequestration is especially relevant: 1) Bioenergy: removal of straw from a Danish soil for energy purposes and 2) Organic versus conventional farming: comparative study of soybean production in China. The suggested approach considers the time of the soil CO2 emissions for the LCA by including the Bern Carbon Cycle Model. Time...

Carbon footprints of crops from organic and conventional arable crop rotations – using a life cycle assessment approach Organic Eprints
Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Meyer-Aurich, Andreas; Olesen, Jørgen E.; Chirinda, N.; Hermansen, J.E..
Many current organic arable agriculture systems are challenged by a dependency on imported livestock manure from conventional agriculture. At the same time organic agriculture aims at being climate friendly. A life cycle assessment is used in this paper to compare the carbon footprints of different organic arable crop rotations with different sources of N supply. Data from long-term field experiments at three different locations in Denmark were used to analyse three different organic cropping systems (‘Slurry’, ‘Biogas’ and ‘Mulching’), one conventional cropping system (‘Conventional’) and a “No input” system as reference systems. The ‘Slurry’ and ‘Conventional’ rotations received slurry and mineral fertilizer, respectively, whereas the ‘No input’ was...

Carbon footprints of organic dairying in six European countries—real farm data analysis Organic Eprints
Hietala, Sanna Maria; Smith, Laurence; Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Kurpa, Sirpa; Padel, Susanne; Hermansen, John E..
Dairy farming is the largest agricultural contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in Europe. In this study, the carbon footprint of organic dairying was evaluated by means of a life cycle assessment, based on real farm data from six European countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Italy and United Kingdom. A total of 34 farms were analysed. The assessment was carried out using an attributional approach with system boundaries from cradle to farm gate. In relation to dairy production, a functional unit of 1 kg of energy corrected milk was used. The results gave an average of 1.32 kg CO2 equivalents per kilogramme of energy-corrected milk with standard deviation of 0.22, which is consistent with recent studies. The main contributor to this is enteric...

Comparison of interspecific competition and N use in pea–barley, faba bean–barley and lupin–barley intercrops grown at two temperate locations Organic Eprints
Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Hauggaard-Nielsen, Henrik; Joernsgaard, Bjarne; Jensen, Erik Steen.
Mixed intercropping of spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) with field pea (Pisum sativum L.), faba bean (Vicia faba var. minor L.) or narrow-leafed lupin (Lupinus angustifolius L.) was compared to sole cropping in two field experiments at different locations, on a sandy loam soil and a sandy soil, in Denmark in 2001. Grain legumes were dominant in intercrops on the sandy loam soil, except for lupin, whereas barley was dominant in intercrops on the sandy soil site. Combined intercrop grain yields were comparable to grain yields of the respective sole cropped grain legume or sole cropped, fertilized barley on each soil site. On the sandy loam soil, pea-barley and faba bean-barley intercrops increased the proportion of plant N derived from N2 fixation in...

Del og hersk Organic Eprints
Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Hauggaard-Nielsen, Henrik; Jensen, Erik Steen.

Environmental assessment of imported organic products - focusing on orange juice from Brazil and soybeans from China Organic Eprints
Knudsen, Marie Trydeman.
The import of organic products to Denmark has seen a four to five fold increase during the last seven years, due to a growing demand for organic products. Globally, the market for organic food and drinks has also more than doubled during the same period. The global organic agricultural land has concurrently expanded from 26 to 35 million hectares, mostly due to major conversions in Argentina, China, India, Australia, USA and Brazil. While Europe and North America still makes up the major markets for organic food and drink, the extraordinary growth in the organic markets offers export opportunities for both developed and developing countries. The production and export of organic products in developing countries might offer both economic and...

Environmental assessment of organic juice imported to Denmark: a case study on oranges (Citrus sinensis) from Brazil Organic Eprints
Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Almeida, Gustavo Fonseca de; Langer, Vibeke; Abreu, Lucimar Santiago de; Halberg, Niels.
Growing global trade with organic products has given rise to a debate on the environmental impacts during both production and transport. Environmental hotspots of organic orange juice produced by smallholders in Brazil, processed and imported to Denmark were identified in a case study using a life cycle approach. Furthermore, small-scale organic orange production was compared with small-scale conventional and large-scale organic orange production in the case study area in Brazil. Transport was the main contributor (57%) to the global warming potential of organic orange juice from small-scale farmers imported to Denmark, followed by the processing stage (29%), especially the truck transport of fresh oranges in Brazil and of reconstituted orange juice...

Environmental assessment of organic soybean (Glycine max.) imported from China to Denmark: a case study Organic Eprints
Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Yu Hui, Qiao; Yan, Luo; Halberg, Niels.
Growing global trade with organic products has increased the demand for environmental impact assessments during both production and transport. Environmental hotspots of organic soybeans produced in China and imported to Denmark were identified in a case study using a life cycle assessment approach. Furthermore, environmental impacts of organic and conventional soybeans at farm gate were compared in the case study. The total global warming potential (GWP) per ton organic soybeans imported to Denmark revealed that 51% came from transportation and 35% from the farm level. Comparing organic and conventional soybean at farm gate showed that GWP, non-renewable energy use, acidification and eutrophication was lower per ton organic soybeans, whereas land use was...

Environmental life cycle assessment of organic grass protein from multispecies mixtures Organic Eprints
Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Dorca-preda, Teodora; Djomo, Sylvestre Njakou; Kristensen, Troels; Ambye-Jensen, Morten; Møller, Henrik B.; Dupont, Y.L.; Cong, W-F; Eriksen, Jørgen.
Including grass leys in organic arable rotations has potentially several benefits such as suppression of certain weeds, increased biodiversity (i.e. pollinators), increased soil carbon sequestration and productivity among others. The biomass from the grass mixtures can be refined into protein feed concentrate for monogastrics that can partly replace imported soybean, while the fibre fraction can be used as ruminant feed or for biogas. The grass mixtures can also be used directly for biogas. Increasing diversity of the mixtures will potentially also increase the yield stability and the benefits for biodiversity (pollinators), while the number of cuts per year will also have an effect. Thus, the use of multispecies mixtures in organic arable rotation for...

Estimated N leaching losses for organic and conventional farming in Denmark Organic Eprints
Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Kristensen, Ib Sillebak; Berntsen, Jørgen; Petersen, Bjørn Molt; Kristensen, Erik Steen.
The impact of organic compared to conventional farming practices on N leaching loss was studied for Danish mixed dairy and arable farms using an N balance approach based on representative data. On mixed dairy farms a simple N balance method was used to estimate N surplus and N leaching loss. On arable farms the simple N balance method was unreliable due to changes in the soil N pool. Consequently, the FASSET simulation model was used to estimate N surplus, N leaching loss and the changes in the soil N pool. The study found a lower N leaching loss from organic than conventional mixed dairy farms, primarily due to lower N inputs. On organic arable farms the soil N pool was increasing over years but the N leaching loss was comparable to conventional arable...

Global trends in agriculture and food systems Organic Eprints
Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Halberg, Niels; Olesen, Jørgen E.; Byrne, John; Iyer, Venkatesh; Toly, Noah.
Increasing globalization affects agricultural production and trade and has consequences for the sustainability of both conventional and organic agriculture. During the last decades, agricultural production and yields have been increasing along with global fertilizer and pesticide consumption. This development has been especially pronounced in the industrialized countries and some developing countries such as China, where cereal yields have increased a remarkable twofold and 4.5-fold respectively since 1961. In those countries, food security has increased, a greater variety of food has been offered and diets have changed towards a greater share of meat and dairy products. However, this development has led to a growing disparity among agricultural...

How to include on-farm biodiversity in LCA on food? Organic Eprints
Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Halberg, Niels.
Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) of food and agriculture generally include potential effects on global warming, eutrophication, ecotoxocity and acidification some of which again affect biodiversity. However, LCA most often does not include specific indicators of the product’s or agricultural system’s impact (negative or positive) on biodiversity. Using LCA methodology on agricultural products makes it highly relevant to assess the impacts of land use. Some LCA’s include a simple category of land use. This is sometimes interpreted as “nature occupation”. However, if this is the only impact category addressing land use related biodiversity, the LCA cannot distinguish between different forms of agricultural systems, which may differ in their biodiversity impact...

Livscyklusvurdering af økologiske og konventionelle planteavlssædskifter - fokus på drivhusgasemissioner Organic Eprints
Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Olesen, Jørgen E.; Hermansen, John E.; Meyer-Aurich, Andreas.
Life cycle assessment of organic and conventional arable crop rotations - focusing on greenhouse gas emissions. Five arable crop rotations in long-term field trials were investigated; four organic and one conventional - in three years on three different locations in Denmark. The organic crop rotations represented alternative scenarios for outphasing conventional slurry in organic systems. Crops from rotations with grass-clover for biogas in one out of four years had the lowest carbon footprint per kg crop DM. Including soil carbon changes in the life cycle assessment affected the results markedly.
