Differences in nutrient availability and methods of pest management may affect crop growth and product quality. The question is whether conventional and organic cropping systems, which differ clearly in strategies for nutrient and pest management, influence the harvest and sensory quality of the products? Can new organic cropping systems produce vegetables with lower use of resources and losses of nitrate? Organic Eprints

To secure a sustainable production of plant foods for the future, there is a need to develop new cropping systems. These systems should have reduced needs of external resources and reduced environmental impact, while product yields are maintained at high level. Therefore, field trials were performed in Italy, Slovenia, Germany and Denmark with the aim to study new organic cropping systems for production of vegetable crops; and the systems’ effect on labor and energy consumption and the risk of losing nitrate to the water environment. Comparing conventional and improved organic vegetable rotations, yields and nitrogen husbandry Organic Eprints

During 2005 to 2009 three approaches to organic vegetable rotations were compared to a conventional rotation in an interdisciplinary project. The organic rotations differed in their reliance on animal manure vs. cover crops and intercrops, but the rotation of main vegetable and cereal crops were identical in the four rotations. One organic rotation (O1) relied on import of manure for supply of nutrients, in another (O2) cover crops were used to replace most of the manure import, and in (O3) also intercrops were grown to improve natural pest regulation. The yearly import of nitrogen were on average 149, 94, 28, and 28 kg N.ha-1 in C, O1, O2, and O3 respectively. On average the yield in the O1 system was 83% of the yield in the conventional system. Cost and energy evaluation of organic cauliflower in sole crop and living mulch systems Organic Eprints

This paper presents the findings of an assessment aimed to evaluate, in terms of cost and energy consumption, the introduction of living mulches in different organic vegetable systems producing cauliflower. The study was carried out in three European countries (IT, SLO and DK) in the frame of the InterVeg project (Core Organic II). The achievements demonstrated that, in economic terms, farmers’ choice of a specific technique, like living mulch instead of sole cropping, can be influenced by two key elements: human labor and fossil fuel consumption. Different organic systems have a different proportion in using the two inputs depending on the specific farm strategy.

Crop yield, root growth, and nutrient dynamics in a conventional and three organic cropping systems with different levels of external inputs and N re-cycling through fertility building crops Organic Eprints

One core idea behind organic production is that cropping systems should be less dependent on resource import than conventional production and minimize negative environmental effects. This study aimed to test novel organic rotations, designed to reduce reliance on external resource import. We compared a conventional system (C) and an organic system relying on manure import (O1) to two rotations (O2 and O3), both relying on autumn cover crops for soil fertility, and in O3 green manure rows were left as intercrops. Resource import differed between 149, 85, 25 and 25 kg N ha-1 year-1 in C, O1, O2 and O3. Problems of machinery induced soil compaction are evident in organic vegetable production, resulting in stunted root growth and reduced yield. Controlled traffic farming (CTF) provides a possibility to restrict soil compaction to wheel tracks and create traffic-free vegetable beds with improved soil structure. A field experiment was established at a commercial organic vegetable farm in Denmark to investigate the effect of CTF on the growth of cabbage (Brassica oleracea), potato (Solanum tuberosum) and beetroot (Beta vulgaris). Effect of differential N and S competition 1 in inter- and sole cropping of Brassica species and lettuce on glucosinolate concentration Organic Eprints

Field and greenhouse pot experiments were conducted to evaluate the potential to use intercropping as an alternative method to increase glucosinolates in Brassicas by manipulating nitrogen (N) and sulphur (S) balance by intercropping with lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. capitata). In both experiments, four combinations of N and S fertilization were used. In the field experiment no effect of intercropping on the total glucosinolates was found as the growing lettuce was strongly inhibited by the presence of broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var italic). The reduction in neoglucobrassicin in broccoli from intercropping was probably attributed to the lower N concentrations in broccoli florets. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of cover crops on pest/beneficial dynamics and to test the potential of living mulch on enhancing biological control against insect pests. The research, carried out in the frame of the InterVeg (Core Organic II) project, involved four European countries: Germany, Slovenia, Denmark and Italy. Three crops were tested: cauliflower, leek and artichoke. The preliminary results obtained in Italy on cauliflower, indicated that the living mulch did not affect the infestation of the cabbage butterfly, Pieris brassicae, showing no detrimental effect of this technique on pest dynamics. Når man dyrker grøntsager i forurenet jord, er der risiko for, at afgrøderne via rødderne optager forureningsstoffer i uacceptabel grad, så de ikke er egnede til at spise. Ved dybereliggende forurening kan problemet teoretisk set imødegås ved at hindre, at rødderne trænger ned i den forurenede jord. To forsøg har imidlertid vist, at end ikke de tætteste geotekstiler i praksis kan standse rodvæksten af grønsager fuldstændigt. Dog kan nogle geotekstiler begrænse rodudbredelsen markant hos de fleste arter.

Grønkål optager nitrat fra mere end 2 meters dybde Organic Eprints

Grønsager kan efterlade meget nitrat i jorden efter høst. Det skyldes at de fleste grønsager kræver en stor tilførsel af kvælstof for at udvikle sig godt, og samtidig er nogle grønsager dårlige til at udnytte det tilførte kvælstof. Hertil kommer at der ofte efterlades kvælstofrige planterester i marken ved høst. De omsættes hurtigt og mineraliseres til nitrat, der risikerer at blive udvasket og dermed forurene vandmiljøet. Både mijømæssigt og agronomisk er det uhensigtsmæssigt at tabe nitrat fra jordbrugssystemet. Det skulle hellere bruges til at give et godt udbytte af afgrøderne - ikke mindst i økologiske dyrkningssystemer.

Living mulch and vegetable production: effect on crop/weed competition Organic Eprints

Two field experiments were carried out in order to test the effect on weed management of living mulch introduction in organically managed cauliflower in Central Italy and leek in Denmark. Burr medic and Dyers Woad were sown as living mulch in Central Italy and Denmark, respectively. Different living mulch managements and cultivars were tested in strip plot designs. The main objective of the research was the evaluation of their effects on both crop growth and weed suppression. Consumers expect that the production of organic vegetables is less harmful to the environment compared to conventional vegetable cropping. However, vegetables with a high nitrogen demand such as cauliflower may cause intensive leaching of nitrate to natural waters in conventional as well as in organic production.
