Coffee is one of the most valuable agricultural commodities and ranks second on international trade exchanges. The genus Coffea belongs to the Rubiaceae family which includes other important plants. The genus contains about 100 species but commercial production is based only on two species, Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora that represent about 70 % and 30 % of the total coffee market, respectively. The Brazilian Coffee Genome Project was designed with the objective of making modern genomics resources available to the coffee scientific community, working on different aspects of the coffee production chain. We have single-pass sequenced a total of 214,964 randomly picked clones from 37 cDNA libraries of C. arabica, C. canephora and C. racemosa,...

Identification of 14-3-3-like protein in sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Kuramae,Eiko Eurya; Fenille,Roseli Chela; Rosa Jr.,Vicente Eugenio de.
In a search of the sugarcane expressed sequence tag (SUCEST) database we located three full-length cDNAs (SCCCLR1022D05.g, SCCCRZ1001D02.g and SCBFLR1026E02.g) encoding the 14-3-3 proteins from sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum). The encoded proteins were identified based on the clustering of the expressed sequence tags and were shown to encode proteins similar to 14-3-3 proteins of other monocotyledonous plants. Cluster SCCCLR1022D05.g was 99% similar to the maize 14-3-3-like protein (gi|1345587) while cluster SCCCRZ1001D02.g shared 96% and SCBFLR1026E02.g 94% similarity with the 14-3-3 protein of rice (gi|7435022). Although 14-3-3 proteins have been reported to be specific to particular species, tissue or organ from which they were isolated, all three...

Morphomolecular characterization of Pleurotus ostreatus (Jacq. Fr.) kummer strains in relation to luminosity and temperature of frutification Scientia Agricola
Marino,Regina Helena; Eira,Augusto Ferreira da; Kuramae,Eiko Eurya; Queiroz,Elvio Cardoso.
Temperature is one of the main factors affecting mushrooms development and introduction in new areas. Effects of temperature (15ºC and 28ºC) and luminosity (120 and 900 lux) were evaluated for eight P. ostreatus strains in relation to precocity, yield, pileus area, stalk formation pattern, coloration and handling resistance. Genetic variability of strains was analysed by the Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) method. The Pos 98/37 strain was the only to yield white pileus at 28ºC - 900 lux, and grey ones at 15ºC and 120 lux. The Pos 96/05 strain, the latest, produced lead-coloured pileus at 15ºC, as did the remaining strains at this temperature. Strains cultivated at 15ºC did not differ in relation to handling resistance. At 28ºC mushrooms were less...
