The use of genome-wide association results combined with other genomic approaches may uncover genes and metabolic pathways related to complex traits. In this study, the phenotypic and genotypic data of 1475 Nellore (Bos indicus) cattle and 941,033 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were used for genome-wide association study (GWAS) and copy number variations (CNVs) analysis in order to identify candidate genes and putative pathways involved with the feed conversion ratio (FCR). The GWAS was based on the Bayes B approach analyzing genomic windows with multiple regression models to estimate the proportion of genetic variance explained by each window. The CNVs were detected with PennCNV software using the log R ratio and B allele frequency data. CNV... |

At present there is a need to increase the productivity of systems due to an increasing demand for food and a shrinking area available for agricultural production. One solution is confinement of livestock and the use of genetic groups that are more efficient at transforming feed into product (meat). Feed efficiency may be related to enteric methane emissions, which generate energetic losses when produced by the animal. The objective of this study was to measure enteric methane emissions from crossbred cattle bred from different breeds of bulls. |

In order to minimize unwanted effects of high levels of grains in feedlot diet, antibiotic feed additives are used, but its security is challenged and the discovery of alternative natural substances becomes necessary. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of increasing levels of the forage neutral detergent fiber (NDFf) and additives in feeding behavior and enteric methane emissions. Seventy Nellore bulls, (408 ± 14.17 kg initial LW), were distributed in a factorial arrangement 2 x 3 + 1, where two additives (500 mg kg-1 DM, of a blend of castor oil and cashew nut shell liquid, Essential Oligo Basics, Brazil, or 30 mg kg-1 DM of monensin), three levels of NDFf (6, 9 and 15% in DM), and control group, without additive. The diet was composed by... |

The residual gain (RG) was proposed as a measure that estimates the weight gain according to feed intake and body weight (Koch et al., 1963; J. Anim. Sci., 22:486). With the objective to verify the differences between RG classes in performance, feed efficiency and ultrasound carcass traits in Nellore cattle (bulls n = 141, 21-mo old 385 kg initial BW; steers n = 224, 20-mo old, 350 kg initial BW), we computed the average daily gain (ADG), dry matter intake (DMI), feed conversion ratio (F:G), residual feed intake (RFI) and the gain of ribeye area (GREA), gain of backfat thickness (GBFT) and gain of rumpfat thickness (GRFT) measured by ultrasound. |

The objective of this study was to develop equations to predict retail product and fat trim (weights and percentages) for Nellore (Bos indicus) cattle. Live ultrasound measurements of the longissimus muscle area, backfat thickness at the 12th rib and rump fat depth and shrunk body weight were obtained from 218 Nellore steers to predict weights and percentages of carcass retail product, pistola retail product and fat trimmings. After slaughter, carcasses were deboned and weighed and percentages of retail cuts were obtained directly. Measurements taken directly in the carcasses explained 97% and 36% of variation in carcass retail product weight and percentage, and 94% and 36% of variation in pistola retail weight and percentage, respectively. The objective was to evaluate protein turnover, nitrogen balance, feed energy partitioning, behavior patterns and plasma cortisol in Nellore (B. indicus) cattle with high and low residual feed intake (RFI = actual minus expected dry matter intake). Seventy-two Nellore steers (16 to 21 months-old, 334±19 kg initial body weight) were fed a feedlot diet for 70 days ad libitum. Daily dry matter intake (DMI) and average daily gain (ADG) were recorded individually and RFI was calculated. The 12 steers of lowest (Low-RFI, most efficient) RFI and the 12 ones of highest RFI (High-RFI, least efficient) were evaluated with respect to their behavior patterns and plasma cortisol concentration. Urine was collected for determination of daily 3-methylhistidine excretion... |
