Benefits of swath mapping for the identification of marine habitats in the New Caledonia Economic Zone ArchiMer
Van De Beuque, Sabrina; Auzende, Jean-marie; Lafoy, Yves; Grandperrin, René.
The ZoNeCo programme is devoted to the evaluation of the marine resources of the Economic Zone of New Caledonia. The results are essentially dependent on the quality of the seafloor mapping. From 1993 to 1996, four geological and geophysical surveys using the EM12 DUAL multibeam echosounder provided swath-mapping and acoustic imagery data of the seafloor of selected sites on the northern and southern parts of the Norfolk ridge, the Loyalty basin, around the Loyalty islands and in the westernmost part of the Economic Zone of New Caledonia. The accuracy of these documents shows the morphology of the seafloor in detail and allows rocky substratum to be differentiated from muddy bottom. It allows favorable emplacements of future exploratory fishing surveys to...

Geophysical characterization of bottom simulating reflectors in the Fairway Basin (off New Caledonia, Southwest Pacific), based on high resolution seismic profiles and heat flow data ArchiMer
Nouze, Herve; Cosquer, Emmanuel; Collot, Julien; Foucher, Jean-paul; Klingelhoefer, Frauke; Lafoy, Yves; Geli, Louis.
High-resolution reflection and refraction seismic data were collected in 2004 to investigate, in further detail than allowed by pre-existing low resolution seismic data, the nature of a Bottom Simulating Reflector (BSR) that extends over a broad area of the Fairway Basin, a rifted, continental structure located on the eastern flank of the Lord Howe Rise, to the southwest of New Caledonia. Two main reflectors are documented: the shallower (RN) mimics the seafloor and has a negative polarity while the deeper (RP) does not always mimic the seafloor and has a positive polarity. Using the existing regional seismic lines, we can show that reflector RN can be continuously followed up to DSDP 208 drill hole site. Reflector RP is discontinuous and cannot be traced...

Lafoy, Yves; Auzende, Jean-Marie; Gente, Pascal; Eissen, Jean-Philippe.
Lithosphere delamination with foundering of lower crust and mantle caused permanent subsidence of New Caledonia Trough and transient uplift of Lord Howe Rise during Eocene and Oligocene initiation of Tonga-Kermadec subduction, western Pacific ArchiMer
Sutherland, Rupert; Collot, Julien; Lafoy, Yves; Logan, Graham A.; Hackney, Ron; Stagpoole, Vaughan; Uruski, Chris; Hashimoto, Takehiko; Higgins, Karen; Herzer, Richard H.; Wood, Ray; Mortimer, Nick; Rollet, Nadege.
We use seismic reflection and rock sample data to propose that the first-order physiography of New Caledonia Trough and Norfolk Ridge formed in Eocene and Oligocene time and was associated with the onset of subduction and back-arc spreading at the Australia-Pacific plate boundary. Our tectonic model involves an initial Cretaceous rift that is strongly modified by Cenozoic subduction initiation. Hence, we are able to explain (1) complex sedimentary basins of inferred Mesozoic age; (2) a prominent unconformity and onlap surface of middle Eocene to early Miocene age at the base of flat-lying sediments beneath the axis of New Caledonia Trough; (3) gently dipping, variable thickness, and locally deformed Late Cretaceous strata along the margins of the trough;...

Map helps unravel complexities of the southwestern Pacific Ocean ArchiMer
Collot, Julien; Vendé-leclerc, Myriam; Rouillard, Pierrick; Lafoy, Yves; Géli, Louis.
The southwestern Pacific Ocean region hosts submerged continental margins, ridges, sedimentary basins, and volcanic arcs located around Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Australia, and Fiji. The geological history of this vast region has remained controversial, and to improve understanding of the processes that controlled its geodynamical evolution, it is essential to place each piece of available data in a regional spatiotemporal framework. To this end, a new map, entitled “Structural Provinces of the Southwest Pacific,” was released by the Geological Survey of New Caledonia in May 2011. The publication consists of two parts: (1) a 40-page booklet of geological notes, which documents the nature and age of each structure and contains an associated list of...

Marine resources of the economic zone of New Caledonia ArchiMer
Auzende, Jean-marie; Grandperrin, René; Bouniot, Emmanuel; Henin, Christian; Lafoy, Yves; De Forges, Bertrand; Van De Beuque, Sabrina; Virly, Sabrina.
The ZoNeCo programme, devoted to the evaluation of living and non-living marine resources within the Economic Zone of New Caledonia, illustrates clearly the Marine Benthic Habitats concept. It exhibits the study of the physical environment and disciplines such as geology and physical oceanography. The results acquired in these fields are used as bases to study the presence and the distribution of living species within a given habitat. The knowledge of all the parameters relative to each discipline is a useful guide for the evaluation and the sustainable management of living and nonliving resources.

Auzende, Jean-marie; Hey, R; Pelletier, Bernard; Lafoy, Yves.
The area located west of the Fiji Islands was previously interpreted as a strike-slip deformation zone. Based on comparison with the Galapagos propagating rift in the East Pacific the area is reinterpreted in terms of a propagating accretion zone.

Lafoy, Yves; Pelletier, Bernard; Auzende, Jean-marie; Missegue, F; Mollard, L.
The new bathymetric, magnetic and mainly seismic data acquired during the Zoesis cruise, reveal the presence of compressional features in the ''Fairway Ridge-Fairway Basin-Lord Howe Rise (northern part)'' area, west of New Caledonia. The compressive strain is especially responsible for the formation of the Fairway Ridge. The compression is emphasized by a regional unconformity that could be dated late Eocene, according to DSDP data in the area, and therefore synchronous with the late Eocene obduction of the New Caledonia ophiolites. The westward extension of the late Eocene compressive strain in the New Caledonia area is more developed than previously thought.

Thinned crust in southwest Pacific may harbor gas hydrate ArchiMer
Auzende, Jean-marie; Dickens, Gerald R.; Van De Beuque, Sabrina; Exon, Neville F.; François, Caroline; Lafoy, Yves; Voutay, Olivier.
The Lord Howe Rise (LHR) is a large, complex, and poorly studied fragment of thinned continental crust submerged 750–3000 m beneath the oligotrophic waters of the central Tasman Sea (Figure 1). Deep seismic profiles taken during recent cruises in the region have revealed an intriguing phenomenon: the eastern slope of the LHR has a prominent and extensive bottom simulating reflector (BSR) that cross‐cuts lithology at 0.65–0.75 s two‐way travel time (twt) [Exon et al., 1998; Lafoy et al., 1998]. Given best estimates for sonic velocity (1600 m/s) and thermal gradients (0.9+0.04°C/m) in sediment on the LHR, predicted temperatures and pressures at the depth of the BSR lie on the CH4‐CH4 hydrate‐seawater equilibrium curve. Thus, the BSR on the LHR most likely...
