A multi-scale study of soil macrofauna biodiversity in Amazonian pastures Inra

The influence of three spatially hierarchical factors upon soil macrofauna biodiversity was studied in four pasture plots in eastern Amazonia. The first factor was the local depth of the soil. The second factor was the ground cover type on the soil samples (bare ground, grass tufts, dead trees lying on the ground). The third factor was the dimensions of the grass tufts sampled (size and shape). The effect of each factor upon the morphospecies richness and density of total soil macrofauna was analysed. Detailed results are given for earthworms, termites, ants, beetles and spiders. All factors significantly affected the morphospecies richness and/or density of the soil macrofauna. Activity of glycolytic enzymes in the gut of Hormogaster elisae (Oligochaeta, Hormogastridae) IRD

The glycolytic enzymatic activities in the gut of the endogeic earthworm #Hormogaster elisae$ from El Molar (Madrid, Spain) were studied in order to determine its digestive capacity and to assess its alimentary regime. Most endogeic earthworms have weak enzymatic complement and they usually establish mutualistic relationships with soil microflora to digest some organic compounds. Therefore, the intestinal wall tissues were cultured in vitro to assess the origin of the glycolytic enzymes found in the gut and enzymatic activities were measured in both cultured tissues and culture media. #H. elisae$ had a wide but not very strong enzyme complement, since all substrates were degraded but most of them at a low rate. Digestion of a vertisol by the endogeic earthworm Polypheretima elongata, Megascolecidae, increases soil phosphate extractibility IRD

L'effet du ver de terre endogé #Polypheretima elongata$ sur l'état du phosphore dans des vertisols (Sud-Est de la Martinique, Antilles) a été étudié au laboratoire. Des turricules ont été récoltés en surface et comparés à du sol non ingéré. Les phosphates ont été extraits par un traitement séquentiel mettant en oeuvre des résines anioniques suivies d'une extraction au bicarbonate de sodium. Pour certaines répétitions, une fumigation au chloroforme a suivi l'extraction par résine pour l'immobilisation microbienne. Les teneurs en phosphates extractibes sont plus élevées de 43% dans les turricules que dans le sol mais il n'a ya pas de différences de teneurs en phosphore total. La fumigation n'a aucun effet sur les teneurs des turricules en phosphates...

The combined use of earthworm inoculation and organic input is considered an efficient way to improve traditional slash-and-burn agriculture in the humid tropics. A biofertilisation assay was conducted in Maripasoula (French Guiana), testing the effects of three different organic amendments (manioc peels, sawdust and wood charcoal) and the inoculation of the endogeic earthworm Pontoscolex corethrurus on pod production of Vigna unguiculata sesquipedalis and on soil chemical properties (pH, C, N, total and exchangeable P and K). Pod production was highest with manioc peels as available P increased in the soil. Wood charcoal also had a beneficial effect on pod production as it decreased acidity and increased the C:N ratio in the soil. In sawdust-amended soil, pod production did not differ from that in unamended soil. Inoculation of earthworms at a density of 80 sub-adults m-2 did not significantly affect either pod...

Effect of the endogeic earthworm Pontoscolex corethrurus on soil chemical characteristics and plant growth in a low-input tropical agroecosystem IRD

Low densities of #Pontoscolex corethrurus$ have been introduced into low-input cropping systems at Yurimaguas (Peru) to test their effects on soil fertility under field conditions for six succesive cropping cycles. Earthworm biomass was sustained at 40 g/m2 fw (ca. 3 g ash-free dry mass) on the average with peak values of 80 g at harvests 2 and 3 in treatments receiving an application of legume green manure. At the 6th harvest, earthworm biomass was significantly lower in the treatment with no organic input than in treatments with crop residues and legume green manure. Effect of two organic residues on growth and cocoon production of the earthworm Hyperiodrilus africanus (Eudrilidae) IRD

La croissance et la production de cocons du ver de terre #Hyperiodrilus africanus$, un épiendogé largement répandu en Afrique occidentale et centrale ont été étudiées en conditions de laboratoire dans le but de connaître ses caractéristiques démographiques. L'effet des résidus (coques) de café et de litières de #Chromolaena odorata$, résidus organiques disponibles dans les systèmes de culture dans la partie centrale de la Côte d'Ivoire, sur ces paramètres a été testé pendant 305 jours.
