A DYNAMIC DIFFERENTIAL DEMAND SYSTEM: AN APPLICATION OF TRANSLATION AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Lee, Jonq-Ying.
The differential demand system or Rotterdam model is extended to include lagged consumption through translation parameters, allowing habit and inventory effects. Applications of the model to annual U.S. expenditure and weekly juice sales data illustrate the importance of the time interval of an observation on the relative strengths of the habit inventory.

A general differential demand model for mixed quantity- and price-dependent equations AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Lee, Jonq-Ying; Gao, Xiaoming.
A mixed demand system is developed using the fundamental matrix equation of demand theory. The model parameterization combines the parameterizations of the quantity- and price- dependent Rotterdam models. The relationship between the mixed-demand-model parameters and the underlying direct and indirect utility functions allows analysis of various separability assumptions.

A Study of Baseline Estimates AgEcon
Lee, Jonq-Ying.
Baseline estimates are generated using the Box-Jenkins time series expectation of non-promoted volume calculated at the store/week/UPC level. The expectation of sales is a weighted moving average of weekly observations of normal non-promoted volume. The relationship between baseline volume and promotional activities was examined using the ordinary least squares method in this analysis.

A Study of the Demand for Medical Services in Taiwan AgEcon
Chung, Rebecca H.; Lee, Jonq-Ying; Brown, Mark G..
This paper presents a version of the household production theory to explain the demand for health. In this study we have explored the factors that influence the demand for medical services and medical expenditures in Taiwan. A negative binomial model was used to study the demand for medical services. We found that the demand for medical services and medical expenditures are related to household composition, household income, family size, occupation of the household head, and living environments. In addition, we found higher usage of medical services on average for those households with medical insurances other than the national health insurance.

A study of the demand relationship between fixed-weight and random-weight citrus AgEcon
Gao, Zhifeng; Lee, Jonq-Ying; Brown, Mark G..
Using Rotterdam demand system this study examines the demand relationships among four random-weight (FW) and fixed-weight citrus (RW). Results indicated that FW and RW grapefruit (and FW and RW oranges) are not substitutes; however, RW tangerine is a substitute of FW tangerines. In addition, promoting FW grapefruit would not influence the demand for RW grapefruit and vice versa. Promoting FW oranges (or FW tangerines) would decrease the demand for RW oranges (or RW tangerines) and vice versa.

A Study of the Impact of Tropicana’s Marketing Strategy Changes on OJ Demand AgEcon
Lee, Jonq-Ying.
Tropicana introduced a new package design as part of its advertising and branding campaign, with the theme “Squeeze it’s a Natural in January 2009. Sales of the Tropicana Pure Premium line plummeted 20% between the January and February from the same period a year ago. Tropicana had changed its mind and went back to the earlier packaging at the end of February. This study examined the impact of Tropicana’s package redesign on the sales of Tropicana orange juice and on the sales of all orange juice. Study results show that the package redesign cost Tropicana an estimated $27 million.

A UNIFORM SUBSTITUTE DEMAND MODEL WITH VARYING COEFFICIENTS AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Lee, Jonq-Ying.
This study extends Barten's synthetic demand modeling approach to increase the flexibility of the uniform substitute specification of the Rotterdam demand system. Marginal propensities to consume (MPC) vary with budget shares and Slutsky coefficients are defined in terms of varying MPCs. An application of the model to orange-juice products shows that the pattern of income and price elasticities over time is much different than when MPCs are restricted to be constant.

Advertising and Product Confusion: A Case Study of Grapefruit Juice AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Lee, Jonq-Ying; Behr, Robert M..
Demand relationships for two closely related products -- grapefruit juice and grapefruit-juice cocktail -- were estimated from grocery-store scanner data to analyze the contention that consumer confusion exists between the two products. Results suggest confusion may exist, with grapefruit-juice advertising not only increasing the demand for grapefruit juice but also for grapefruit-juice cocktail.

AIDS and separability: a non sequitur AgEcon
Lee, Jonq-Ying; Brown, Mark G.; Seale, James L., Jr..
The almost ideal demand system (AIDS) is commonly used to study demand for agricultural commodities and groups of commodities. Increasingly, separability has been utilized in conjunction with the AIDS to estimate conditional demand systems as well as to improve upon precision of parameter estimates. The paper shows that separability conditions are inconsistent with use of the AIDS and that tests of separability with the AIDS are problematic.
