A comparative study on morphology, growth rate and reproduction of Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822), Heterobranchus longifilis Valenciennes, 1840, and their reciprocal hybrids (Pisces, Clariidae) IRD
Legendre, Marc; Teugels, G.G.; Cauty, C.; Jalabert, B..
Successful reciprocal hybridizations between #Clarias gariepinus$ and #Heterobranchus longifilis$ were performed during three experiments. The reciprocal hybrids were viable, their survival rates being similar to those found in the maternal species. Hybrid morphology was intermediate to that of the parents. No difference in external morphology was found between the reciprocal hybrids. Growth rate comparison under the same conditions and over a period of 307 days, revealed a considerably faster growth for #H. longifilis$ x male #C. gariepinus$ hybrids displayed an even faster growth than #H. longifilis$. A karyological analysis of the artificial hybridization between Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822) and Heterobranchus longifilis Valenciennes, 1840 (Pisces; Clariidae) IRD
Teugels, G.G.; Ozouf-Costazt, C.; Legendre, Marc; Parrent, M..
A karyological analysis of an artificial hybridization (reciprocical crosses) between two African clariid catfish, #Clarias gariepinus$ (Burchell, 1822) and #Heterobranchus longifilis$ Valencienne, 1840, was performed. #C. gariepinus$ has a standard karyotype of 2n = 56, while #H. longifilis$ has 2n = 52. The hybrids revealed an intermediate karyotype (2n = 54), and it appears as if they have totalized the haploid chromosome number of both parental species, excluding gynogenesis or androgenesis. The hybridal karyotype is considered as aneuploid, although the hybrids proved to be fertile. No variation was found in the hybride karyotype. (Résumé d'auteur)

A systematic revision of the African catfish genus Heterobranchus Geoffroy - Saint-Hilaire, 1809 (Pisces : Clariidae) IRD
Teugels, G.G.; Denayer, B.; Legendre, Marc.
The economically important African catfish genus #Heterobranchus$ has been revised using biometrical and osteological features. From the 11 nominal species assigned to this genus, four are recognized as valid : #H. bidorsalis$, #H.longifilis$ and #H. boulengeri$. A key to the species together with species descriptions and data on the distribution of each species are given, as is a discussion of their phylogeny. (Résumé d'auteur)

Absence of marked seasonal variations in sexual maturity of Pangasius hypophthalmus brooders held in ponds at the Sukamandi station (Java, Indonesia) IRD
Legendre, Marc; Subagja, J.; Slembrouck, Jacques.
An evaluation of the seasonal variations of sexual activity of #P. hypophthalmus$ broodstock held in 50 m2 ponds was carried out between April 1997 and April 1998 at the Sukamandi station (West Java, 6°S of latitude). These variations were assessed through the evolution of oocyte diameter of individual females, the proportion of fluent males and the success of hormonal-induced breeding trials. High proportions of fluent males and mature females with post-vitellogenic oocytes of modal diameter superior to 1.00 mm were found at anytime. As a consequence, successful induced breeding of this species using hormonal treatments could be performed regardless of season and allowed an all year long production of fry. This continuous sexual maturity of #P....

The new sustainable development data repository requires new analysis grids, in particular for factors accounted for in productive system typologies. This paper, based on the aquaculture example, analyses the diversity in aquaculture systems with respect to sustainable development. Various typologies are obtained by evaluating structural and functional approaches integrating variables related to production and regulation systems and to the territorial insertion of fish farms. Categories have been defined on a scale based on a set of five sites, which are representative of a wider range of aquaculture systems. Use of these categories goes beyond the local typologies and prepares a generic meta-typology classification for the systems. This generic...

It cannot be said that aquaculture has ignored sustainable development (SD), judging by the number of standards, guides and indicators devoted to it, produced mainly under the aegis of international organizations such as FAO, The European Union and sorne NGOs. However, these continue to be perceived in large measure as constraints rather than as shared objectives by actors. Faced with this situation, which is not specific to aquaculture but on the contrary quite general regardless of sector, context or scale, the authors seek to propose a generic approach that through a collective process, i.e. a co-construction, promotes the implementation and appropriation of SD. What makes this approach original is not only the participatory nature of the construction,...

Analysis of precocious mortality of Pangasius hypophthalmus larvae (Siluriformes, Pangasiidae) during the larval rearing and propostion of appropriate treatments IRD
Subagja, J.; Slembrouck, Jacques; Hung, L.T.; Legendre, Marc.
Both in Indonesia and Vietnam, larval rearing of #Pangasius hypophthalmus$ remains problematic due to variable and generally low survival rates obtained. The first week represents the most critical period for these larvae and up to now the cannibalistic behaviour was considered as the main cause of mortality. In the present study, two experiments were carried out in order to better understand the evolution and causes of mortality of #P. hypophthalmus$ larvae from hatching up to 8 days of age and find out measures to improve survival rates. The first experiment was designed to evaluate the importance of cannibalism and differences in mortality when larvae from two different females were reared either in groups of 30 individuals or in isolated conditions (30...

Aquaculture system diversity and sustainable development: fish farms and their representation ArchiMer
Lazard, Jerome; Baruthio, Aurele; Mathe, Syndhia; Rey-valette, Helene; Chia, Eduardo; Clement, Olivier; Aubin, Joel; Morissens, Pierre; Mikolasek, Olivier; Legendre, Marc; Levang, Patrice; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Rene, Francois.
Initiatives for the sustainable development of aquaculture have so far focused on the production of codes of conduct, of best management practices, of standards etc., most of which have been developed by international organisations, the industrial sector and non governmental organisations. They were, to a large extent, produced using a "top down" process and inspired by models from intensive industrial shrimp and sea fish farming (mainly salmon). However, most of global aquaculture production comes from small-and medium-sized farms, essentially in Asia which contributes 92% of the total world aquaculture production volume. The objective of this article is to define the contours of systemic typologies that are able to express the sustainability conditions...

Assessing aquaculture sustainability: a comparative methodology ArchiMer
Lazard, Jerome; Rey-valette, Helene; Aubin, Joel; Mathe, Syndhia; Chia, Eduardo; Caruso, Domenico; Mikolasek, Olivier; Blancheton, Jean Paul; Legendre, Marc; Rene, Francois; Levang, Patrice; Slembrouck, Jacques; Morissens, Pierre; Clements, Olivier.
Little work dealing with the evaluation of aquaculture system sustainability has so far been undertaken on a global and comparative basis. Moreover, such work is mostly based on very unbalanced approaches in terms of the dimensions of sustainable development that are taken into account. The approach adopted in this article is designed to encompass all the dimensions of sustainability including the institutional one (governance). The taking into account of this latter, in particular, together with the role played by aquaculture in sustainability at the territorial level gives the approach its original and innovative nature. The process of establishing the checklist of sustainability indicators in aquaculture relies on a hierarchical nesting approach which...

Domestication of new species and sustainable development in fish culture ArchiMer
Fontaine, Pascal; Legendre, Marc; Vandeputte, Marc; Fostier, Alexis.
How may fish domestication participate in sustainable development of aquaculture? The development of fish farming currently compensates for the stagnation of fishery catches while the market demand continues to increase. The development of fish farming relies on an active diversification of farmed fish species. A diversification based on the farming of native species could reduce the environmental impact of fish culture and could better fit to needs of local markets. Such development could also favour a more integrated local economy. In this context, the building of a generic approach for multi-species domestication is required to optimise the use of the technical and financial means available for fish culture diversification.

Effect of eggs incubation technique on hatching rate, hatching kinetic and survival of larvae in the Asian catfish Pangasius hypophthalmus (Siluriformes, Pangasiidae) IRD
Kristanto, A.H.; Subagja, J.; Slembrouck, Jacques; Legendre, Marc.
The influence of an incubation system on embryo development and subsequent survival of larvae was evaluated on eggs from two #P. hypophthalmus$ females. All tests were performed at a same temperature of 28.5-29°C, given by the water of a re-circulating system to which all incubation devices were connected. The following situations were tested : 1) Happa (adhesive eggs) ; 2) floating screen net (adhesive eggs) ; 3) McDonald type incubator (stickiness of eggs being suppressed with a clay suspension) ; 4) plastic basket with water from the re-circulating system (stickiness of eggs being suppressed with a clay suspension) ; 5) plastic basket with water from the re-circulating system (adhesive eggs) ; 6) plastic basket with mineral water (adhesive eggs). Effect of varying latency period on the quantity and quality of ova after hCG-induced ovulation in the African catfish, Heterobranchus longifilis (Teleostei, Clariidae) IRD

Effects of prey, feeding level, prey accessibility and water aeration on growth and survival of Pangasius hypophthalmus larvae (Siluroidei, Pangasiidae) IRD
Slembrouck, Jacques; Le Thanh Hung; Subagja, J.; Legendre, Marc.
Two feeding experiments were carried out on #Pangasius hypophthalmus$ larvae reared in a recirculating water system during 8 days. The first experiment was done at the Can Tho University (Vietnam) and the second at the RIFF Sukamandi station (Indonesia). The main objective of the first experiment was to compare survival and growth peformance of #P. hypophthalmus$ larvae fed with either #Moina$ sp. or #Artemia$ nauplii and with either strong or moderate aeration. Strong aeration was tested in order to homogenise prey repartition in the water column, since #Artemia$ and #Moina$ sp. tended normally to be concentrated in corners or at the bottom of the tanks. Two feeding rates (150 and 4000% of fish biomass) were tested. The second experiment aimed at an...

Effects of varying latency period on the in vivo survival of ova after Ovaprim- and hCG-induced ovulationin the Asian catfish Pangasius hypophthalmus (Siluriformes, Pangasiidae) IRD
Legendre, Marc; Slembrouck, Jacques; Subagja, J.; Kristanto, A.H..
Over a 2-year period at the Sukamandi station (West Java, Indonesia), 87 #P. hypophthalmus$ females selected on the basis of a modal oocyte diameter greater than 1.0 mm were treated with Ovaprim (n=77) or hCG (n=10) to induce oocyte maturation and ovulation. The two hormonal treatment led to similar results in terms of ovulation percentage (86 and 90%), hatching rates (69 plus or minus 28 and 82 plus or minus 11%) and relative fecundity (167,000 plus or minus 18,000 and 128,000 plus or minus 60,000 eggs/kg, with Ovaprim and hCG respectively. The latency period between the last hormone injection and ovulation was negatively correlated to water temperature but showed important variations at a same temperature depending on individual females (e.g. between...
