Do deep tree roots provide nutrients to the tropical rainforest? Inra

The contribution of deep tree roots to the nutrition of a tropical rainforest were studied along an edaphic transect in French Guyana. Soil types were mapped in relation to the texture of the upper horizons and the depth of occurrence of the loamy saprolite. The position of mature individuals of four common species, differing by they rooting depth, was identified and tree leaves were analysed for major nutrients and strontium (Sr) isotopic ratios. On average, the range of leaf isotopic ratio (Sr-87/Sr-86 = 0.714-0.716) was narrow compared to that of bulk soils (Sr-87/Sr-86 = 0.72-0.77). Isotopic and chemical composition of groundwater in the Bolivian altiplano, present space evolution records hydrologic conditions since 11000 Yr IRD

The phreatic aquifer of the central Altiplano shows a Cl concentration that increases from 0.5 meq l-1 upstream to 150 meq l-1 downstream. The main outflow process from the aquifer is the upward flow E into the unsaturated zone associated to evaporation close to soil surface. A relation has been established for any arid zone areas on the base of isotopic profiles: E (mm yr-1) = 63 Z-l.5 where Z (m) is the water table depth under soil surface. The aquifer under study may have acquired its high chlorine content during last lacustrine phase (Tauca, 12 ka BP). The mean depth of Sr and water uptake in mixed Norway spruce (Picea abies) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) stands was investigated, using natural variations of 87Sr/86Sr and 18O/16O in soils in relation to depth. Three spruce-pine pairs were studied on a podzol and a peat site in Northern Sweden. Tree leaf and wood, as well as soils, soil solutions and roots below each tree were analysed for Sr and Ca concentrations and 87Sr/86Sr ratio. The 18O/16O ratio was also determined in xylem sap and soil solutions in relation to depth. Soil solution 18O/16O decreased in relation to depth. Comparing with xylem sap 18O/16O data indicated a deeper uptake of soil water by pine than spruce on the podzol site and a superficial uptake by both species on the peat. The...

Variations of plant and soil 87Sr/86Sr along the slope of a tropical inselberg Inra

Du sommet vers la base d’un inselberg granitique (Nouragues, Guyane Française), les sols et la végétation évoluent depuis des savanes sur des ilots sableux entre les affleurements rocheux couverts de cyanobactéries, vers une forêt basse sur sols peu épais, riches en minéraux altérables puis une forêt haute sur sols très profonds et altérés.Les variations isotopiques du strontium des sols et des plantes ont été mesurées pour rechercher les sources de nutriments des différentes communautés végétales.Les rapports 87Sr/86Sr du granite et des dépôts atmosphériques sont respectivement de 1,3 et 0,71.
