Impact of the Phaeocystis globosa spring bloom on the intertidal benthic compartment in the eastern English Channel: A synthesis ArchiMer

From 1999 to 2005, studies carried out in the frame of regional and national French programs aimed to determine whether the Phaeocystis globosa bloom affected the intertidal benthic communities of the French coast of the eastern English Channel in terms of composition and/or functioning. Study sites were chosen to cover most of the typical shore types encountered on this coast (a rocky shore, an exposed sandy beach and a small estuary). Both the presence of active Phaeocystis cells and their degradation product (foam) did have a significant impact on the studied shores. Macrobenthic secondary production is widely used to assess the trophic capacity, health, and functioning of marine and freshwater ecosystems. Annual production estimates are often calculated using empirical models and based on data collected during a single period of the year. Yet, many ecosystems show seasonal variations. Although ignoring seasonality may lead to biased and inaccurate estimates of annual secondary production, it has never been tested at the community level. L'année 1992-1993 se distingue des périodes précédentes par un hiver peu rigoureux et, surtout, par un été humide et venteux. La quantité moyenne hebdomadaire d'électricité produite pour la période est de 618 MW.h, soit l'équivalent de quatre tranches, pour un débit moyen calculé de 204 m3/s, soit l'équivalent du débit de pompage de 5 tranches. Sur cette base de calcul, l'augmentation moyenne de la température de l'eau au rejet est de 8.65°C. Cette valeur est plus faible que celle de la période précédente 1991-1992 (9.44°C). L'année 1994-1995 se distingue des périodes précédentes par un hiver peu rigoureux et, surtout, un été très chaud. La quantité moyenne d'électricité produite par la centrale pour la période est de 4 250 MW, soit l'équivalent de 4,7 tranches, pour un débit moyen calculé de 221 m3/s, soit l'équivalent du débit de pompage de 5,5 tranches. Sur cette base de calcul, l'augmentation moyenne de la température de l'eau au rejet est de 9,15°C. Cette valeur est du même ordre que celles des périodes précédentes. Les dosages des haloformes et, en particulier, du plus abondant d'entre eux, le bromoforme, montrent que la chloration a été en service pendant 9 des 12 mois de la période d'étude.

This report is the 19th annual surveillance of the nuclear plant site of Gravelines. Low temperatures are observed in january (water t° = 0°20 in entrance) and high in Automne. Chlorination was stopped three months and half only. Bromoform mean value is 24,4 ug.l-1 . Vibrio variations are linked with fish farm increasing. In April chlorophyll maximum is 18 mg In-3 . Zooplanktonic succession and biomass are usual. Earlyness in sole and spart reproduction was noticeable. Spionidae distribution is linked to nuclear effluent on interdidal zone. Power plant impact is studied in subtidal Abra alba ecosystem.

La stratégie de surveillance est identique à celle des années précédentes. Durant la période 1997-1998, les températures plus élevées que la normale ont été relevées la température moyenne de l'air s'établit, pour la période, à 11,6 °C. La pluviosité globale est également supérieure à la normale avec 778 mm, comparée à 675 mm, valeur moyenne des années précédentes. La température de l'eau observée était 5,5 °C, ce qui est élevé pour le 2 février. Le maximum, le 10 août, est normal 20,3 °C. La moyenne annuelle à la prise est 12,89 °C, soit 0,55 °C supérieure a la période précédente.

This is the 22th annual surveillance report concerning the Gravelines nuclear power plant. The climatology characteristics for 1999 are 11.4° C for air temperature and 769 mm for rainfall. The average AT is 8.35° C measuring water temperature at the entrance and outfall of nuclear plant. Bromoform average value was 20.2 ug/l and the percentage of water recirculation was 6.8 %. Annual oscillation Vibrio was similar to that of previous years : V. aginolyticus is the main species and V cholerae nag is the second (13 %). The maximum chlorophyll biomass was 33 mg/m3 in April as a consequence of the Phaeocystis bloom. Some diatoms maxima appear with Rhizosolenia delicatula in March, Rhizosolenia spp. and Nitzschia in May and Chaetoceros in August. Zooplankton...
