Agonum nigrum DEJEAN, 1828, neu für die Schweiz. Ein Beitrag zur Gesamtverbreitung und Ökologie der Art (Coleoptera, Carabidae) Organic Eprints
Luka, Henryk; Marggi, Werner; Nagel, Peter.
The species Agonum nigrum DEJEAN, 1828, rare in central Europe, is reported for the first time from Switzerland. A distribution map is provided, based on reviewed specimens from museum collections and on literature data. Agonum nigrum is a Mediterranean species with a core distribution in southern Europe. The Swiss locality is situated on the upper Rhine near Basel in an area of meadows and light forest, which has been strongly shaped by man. The habitat is characterized by regular artificial inundation for ground water supply. The characters distinguishing A. nigrum from the similar Agomun atratum (DUFTSCHMID, 1812) are critically examined, and corrected or supplemented when neccssary.

Amara ovata und A. similata (Coleoptera, Carabidae), zwei phytophage Laufkäferarten in Rapsfeldern Organic Eprints
Luka, Henryk; Pfiffner, Lukas; Wyss, Eric.

Approaches to pest management in organic agriculture: a case study in European apple orchards Organic Eprints
Wyss, Eric; Luka, Henryk; Pfiffner, Lukas; Schlatter, Christian; Gabriela, Uehlinger; Daniel, Claudia.
Although the European organic agriculture movement was founded by Rudolf Steiner and Hans Mueller in the years between 1924 and 1940, it was not until the 1980s that pest management researchers began to develop strategies to control pests in organic systems. Today, insect pest management in organic agriculture involves the adoption of scientificallybased and ecologically sound strategies as specified by international and national organic production standards. These include a ban on synthetic insecticides and, more recently, on genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The first phase of an insect pest management program for organic systems is the adoption of cultural practices including diverse crop rotation, enhancement of soil quality by incorporation of...

Auswirkungen verschiedener Ackerkulturen auf die Laufkäfer (Coleoptera, Carabidae) Organic Eprints
Luka, Henryk; Pfiffner, Lukas; Niggli, Urs.
Carabid populations (species diversity and abundance) in different crops were investigated during the period from April to July 1993 to 1995. The study was carried out on two farms in North-Western Switzerland. Nine fields with winter cereals (4x wheat, 2x spelt, 2x barley, lx rye), three rape fields, five spring cultures (3x maize, lx soybeans, lx potatoes) and an arable meadow were studied. In winter cereals, more carabid species were found than in spring cultures. In barley, we recorded fewer carabid species and individuals, larger numbers of hygrophilaus carabids and a more even population structure than in the other cereals. In rape, we recorded the highest numbers of carabid species and individuals, and very large numbers of Amara similata and A...

Auswirkungen zweier Low-Input Anbausystemen auf die Vielfalt der Laufkäfer- und Spinnenfauna - unter Berücksichtigung naturnaher Flächen Organic Eprints
Pfiffner, Lukas; Luka, Henryk.

Luka, Henryk.
In cabbage fields parasitoid wasps (Hymenoptera) use the eggs or larvae of pest butterflies and moths for their own reproduction, ultimately killing them. In this way these parasitoids play an important role in the biological plant protection strategy. An efficient way to promote this parasitoids in the crop field is to provide them with flower strips as well as companion plants, e.g. cornflower, that will provide them with food (nectar) and shelter. Between 2007 and 2010 we conducted experiments to test the olfactory attractiveness of different flowers as well as the influence of their nectar on the regulation of the cabbage moth (Mamestra brassicae) as well as on the lifespan and parasitation performance of its antagonists (egg and larval parasitoids).

Biodiversität fördern und nutzen - Schädlingsregulierung im Kohl Organic Eprints
Luka, Henryk.

Luka, Henryk; Barloggio, Guendalina; Pfiffner, Lukas.

Luka, Henryk; Nagel, Peter; Feldmann, Benedikt; Luka, Agata; Gonseth, Yves.
Within the context of the project «Pilot Study for a Red List of Staphylinids of Switzerland (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae)» of the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (BAFU), the checklist of rove beetles (excluding the subfamily Pselaphinae) in Switzerland is compiled. It accounts for all species that 1) have a record in the database of the Centre Suisse de Cartographie de la Faune, 2) are listed in the unpublished species list compiled by C. Besuchet, and 3) are listed for Switzerland in the catalogue by Löbl & Smetana (2004). In all, 1421 staphylinid taxa (1414 species and 7 additional subspecies) (excl. Pselaphinae) have been recorded from Switzerland, among them 1297 monotypical species, 110 polytypical species represented by only one...

Combined use of herbivore-induced plant volatiles and sex pheromones for mate location in braconid parasitoids Organic Eprints
Xu, Hao; Desurmont, Gaylord; Degen, Thomas; Zhou, Guoxin; Laplanche, Diane; Luka, Henryk; Turlings, Ted C.J..
Herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) are important cues for female parasitic wasps to find hosts. Here, we investigated the possibility that HIPVs may also serve parasitoids as cues to locate mates. To test this, the odour preferences of four braconid wasps – the gregarious parasitoid Cotesia glomerata (L.) and the solitary parasitoids Cotesia marginiventris (Cresson), Microplitis rufiventris Kokujev and Microplitis mediator (Haliday) - were studied in olfactometers. Each species showed attraction to pheromones but in somewhat different ways. Males of the two Cotesia species were attracted to virgin females, whereas females of M. rufiventriswere attracted to virginmales. Male and female M.mediator exhibited attraction to both sexes. Importantly,...

Die Laufkäferfauna (Coleoptera, Carabidae) des Naturschutzgebietes „Petite Camargue Alsacienne" (Elsass, F) Organic Eprints
Luka, Henryk; Walther, Barbara; Durrer, Heinz.
River-meadow landscapes Count among the most endangered landscape elements of central Europe. The present renaturation Programme for the rivermeadow landscapes of the Petite Camargue Alsacienne (F, Alsace, Departement Haut-Rhin) involved a survey on ground beetles (Coleoptera, Carahidae) as representatives of the epigaeic soil fauna. A provisional list of carahid species found at seven survey sites in the Petite Camargue Alsacienne was compiled on the basis of the results of four ecological studies (1991-1996). The results were also analysed with regard to species occurrence, population number and structure, humidity and habitat preferences, and the ocurrence of rare and endangered species. 149 carabid s~ecies were identified in altoeether 29.952...

Do sown wildflower strips enhance the parasitism of lepidopteran pests in cabbage crops? Organic Eprints
Pfiffner, Lukas; Merkelbach, L.; Luka, Henryk.
We investigated the parasitism rates of cabbage lepidopteran pest in relation to presence or absence of adjacent sown, species rich wildflower strips at two sites on farms in the region Grosses Moos, Switzerland. Three treatments have been tested: (1) cabbage adjacent to a wildflower strip, (2) cabbage near to a wildflower strip (>10 m up to 90 m), and (3 = control) cabbage without wildflower strip or any other semi-natural habitats nearby. Caterpillars and eggs of Mamestra brassicae, Pieris rapae, and Plutella xylostella (only larvae) have been sampled weekly in the unsprayed cabbage crops at 6 dates (cauliflower) and 9 dates (red cabbage). The parasitism rate of each pest species and its stage of development was recorded. Caterpillars of M. brassicae...

Do wildflower strips enhance pest control in organic cabbage? Organic Eprints
Schied, Johannes; Leimgruber, Andrea; Willareth, Martin; Nagel, Peter; Pfiffner, Lukas; Luka, Henryk; Wyss, Eric.
Within this project we assess whether wildflower strips and companion plants increase the control of cabbage pests Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), Mamestra brassicae L. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Pieris rapae L. (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) by (1) naturally occurring parasitoids and predators and (2) mass‐releasedn Trichogramma brassciae (Bezdenko) (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) parasitoids. Two organic cabbage fields were used for this study: adjacent to each field a wildflower strip was sown and companion plants (Centaurea cyanus L. (Asteraceae)) intermixed within the crop. Within each field ~15,000 M. brassicae eggs were placed out to determine the parasitism rates by mass‐released T. brassicae and to assess the levels of egg...

Earthworm populations in two low-input cereal farming systems Organic Eprints
Pfiffner, Lukas; Luka, Henryk.
Earthworm populations in low-input integrated crop management (ICM: no application of insecticides, fungicides and growth regulators) and organic farming systems were compared. The study was performed as a 3-year field survey using a paired-farm approach in six different locations in northwestern Switzerland. Earthworms were extracted from soils sampled from 24 winter cereal fields using a combined method of extraction by mustard flour solution and handsorting. Earthworm communities differed between these farming systems. Over all sites, the mean biomass, abundance and species richness of earthworms found in the low-input ICM fields were significantly lower than in the organic fields. Adult earthworms in organic fields were 114% more abundant than in ICM...

Ecological cross compliance promotes farmland biodiversity in Switzerland Organic Eprints
Aviron, Stéphanie; Nitsch, Heike; Jeanneret, Philippe; Buholzer, Serge; Luka, Henryk; Pfiffner, Lukas; Pozzi, Stefano; Schüpbach, Beatrice; Walter, Thomas; Herzog, Felix.
In ecological cross compliance, farmers have to meet environmental standards in order to qualify for area-related direct payments. Because this is a strong financial incentive, cross compliance is a potentially powerful policy instrument. We monitored the effectiveness of cross compliance in promoting biodiversity on grassland and on arable land in Switzerland over 8 years. We observed measurable benefits for flora, butterflies, ground beetles, and spiders, in terms of species numbers and/or community composition. However, populations of threatened species showed no signs of benefit. While cross compliance has been in force in Switzerland for almost a decade, it has only recently been introduced in the neighbouring European Union. We argue that – provided...
