Bisabolene epoxides in sex pheromone in Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae): role of cis isomer and relation to specificity of pheromone Inra

The trans- andcis-(Z)-α-bisabolene epoxides (trans- andcis-(Z)-αBE) are the main components of the male sex pheromone in Nezara viridula. The role of thecis isomer and the importance of thecis/trans proportion for the activity and the specificity of the pheromone are not clearly elucidated and were studied here. Interindividual variation of thecis/ trans proportion produced by males was studied by individual hexanic extracts in two strains originating from the south of France (SF) and French West Indies (FWI). The trans isomer composed 42–82% of bisabolene epoxides in SF males and 74–94% of bisabolene epoxides in FWI males. Means (± SD) significantly differ between SF (62.8%±8.4) and FWI (82.4%±5.9) males in spite of this interindividual variation....

Defensive secretion of first-instar larvae of rootstalk borer weevil, Diaprepes abbreviatus L. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), to the fire-ant Solenopsis geminata (F.) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Inra

Since several species of predatory ants show some kind of repulsion towards the first-instar larvae (FIL) ofDiaprepes abbreviatus L., the predatory behavior of Solenopsis geminata (F.), a common ant in the citrus groves in Guadeloupe, was studied. Different extracts of larvae were disposed on egg masses of D. abbreviatus and presented as prey to the ants, both in the field and in the laboratory. The ants are repelled by the FIL extracts. The allelochemicals involved are produced in large amounts, from 5 to 20 ng per larva. Physiochemical analyses have led to the identification of two sesquiterpenes of molecular weight 218 and 234, secreted in the respective proportions of 65 and 35%.

Differences in sex pheromone communication systems of closely related species : Spodoptera latifascia (Walker) and S. descoinsi Lalanne-Cassou and Silvain (Lepidoptera : Noctuidae) Inra

S. latifascia and S. descoinsi are closely related species that occur sympatrically over limited areas in French Guiana. We examined allopatric populations, S. latifascia originating from Barbados and S. descoinsi from French Guiana. Studies on nocturnal activity cycles showed temporal partitioning of female calling behavior, male sexual activity, and mating behavior.S. descoinsi were sexually active in the first half of the scotophase whereas S. latifascia were sexually active in the second half. We investigated the exocrine secretions from the five nymphal instars in the southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula, by analyzing separately the contents of the three dorsal abdominal reservoirs. All DAGs 1 produced a mixture of five alkanes with 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 carbons. No differences were found between DAGs 2 and DAGs 3, for the five instars: the glands of first instars produce the same alkanes as DAGs 1, n-tridecane, traces of (E)-2-decenal, and a specific compound: (E)-4-oxo-2-decenal. Efficiency of spraying mountain pine cones with oleoresin of Swiss stone pine cones to prevent insect attack Inra

The difference in cone colonization by specialized insects that had been observed between Swiss stone pine (Pinus cembra L.) and mountain pine (P. uncinata Ram.) prompted us to test whether volatiles and oleoresin of Swiss stone pine cones may serve as a barrier for insect attack. The volatiles emitted by cones of both pine species were sampled using headspace techniques in the French Alps. The cone volatiles of both species essentially consisted of seven similar monoterpenes, but the terpene profiles markedly differed between species. α-Pinene (67% of the total), β-pinene, and limonene + β-phellandrene were dominant in the cone volatiles of Swiss stone pine, while the cone emissions of mountain pine showed no dominant terpenoid. Improvement of the catalytic properties of fungal laccases is a current challenge for the efficient bioremediation of natural media polluted by xenobiotics. We developed the heterologous expression of a laccase from the white-rot fungus Trametes versicolor in the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica as a first step for enzyme evolution. The full-length cDNA consisted of a 1,561-bp open reading frame encoding lacIIIb, a 499-amino-acid protein and a 21-amino-acid signal peptide. Identification of pheromone synergists in american palm weevil, Rhynchophorus palmarum, and attraction of related dynamis borassi Inra

Thirteen host-plant kairomone blends, including 28 compounds, were tested and showed moderate to high synergy with rhynchophorol. The blends plus rhynchophorol also attracted the related Dynamis borassi. Ethanol–ethyl acetate blends in various ratios showed moderate synergy. Male aggregation pheromone of date palm fruit stalk borer Oryctes elegans Inra

Laboratory and field investigations were carried out to characterize the chemical communication system of the date palm fruit stalk borer, Oryctes elegans, and to develop pheromone-based trapping in Eastern Iran. Adults of both sexes feeding on date palm pieces attracted conspecifics, whereas date palm alone was minimally attractive. Males were twice as attractive as females. More beetles were captured at the palm crown than at ground level. Odors from adults feeding on sugarcane were sampled and analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Male-produced aggregation pheromone of the american palm weevil, Rhynchophorus palmarum (L.) (Coleoptera, Curculionidae): collection, identification, electrophysiogical activity, and laboratory biossay Inra

Male American palm weevils (APWs),Rhynchophorus palmarum (L.) produced two sex-specific compounds, which were disclosed by volatile collections on Supelpak-2 and gas chromatography. One was a minor compound, not always detected. The major male-produced volatile was identified as (2E)-6-methyl-2-hepten-4-ol through coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry, and rational synthesis. We propose the trivial name rhynchophorol for this new molecule, which proved to be the essential component of the APW aggregation pheromone by electroantennography, coupled gas chromatography-electroantennography and behavioral bioassays.

Mécanismes de résistance de l'arachide au Puccinia arachidis Speg. IRD

L'arachide oppose plusieurs mécanismes de résistance au #P. arachidis$ : teneurs élevées en inhibiteurs constitutifs et/ou stimulation différentielle de synthèses de phytoalexines aliphatiques ou phénoliques. Dix facteurs de résistance sont identifiés, leur accumulation pour partie analysable en CLHP. La plante oppose peu de barrières mécaniques. Les réactions de défense sont stimulées par la prémunition ou l'application de Phosétyl Al, déprimées par celle d'un inhibiteur. L'incidence de la modulation est étudiée sur des composantes de la résistance, ses conséquences en termes épidémiologiques évaluées sur la base d'expérimentations au champ et de simulation dynamique. Phytoalexines et réactions de défense de la tomate aux infections par PHYTOPHTHORA PARASITICA et VERTICILLIUM ALBO-ATRUM IRD

Deux cultivars de tomates de phénotype Saint-Pierre, isogéniques pour la résistance à la verticilliose et différents par celle au mildiou (et à PHYTOPHTHORA PARASITICA Dast.), sont inoculés par P. PARASITICA et par VERTICILLIUM ALBO-ATRUM Reinke et Berth. Aux réactions de défense correspond l'accumulation, dans les tissus, de sesquiterpènes, de composés phénoliques, de tomatine et de dérivés oxygénés de linoléate de méthyle. Les synthèses de ces substances chez l'hôte sont modulées selon les cultivars et les parasites confrontés. Les études d'inhibition in vitro de P. PARASITICA révèlent une importante synergie entre des diénols d'une part, et des produits phénoliques et la tomatine d'autre part.

Sex pheromone of the european sunflower moth, Homoeosoma nebulellum (Den. and Schiff.) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) Inra

Four components, (Z)-9-tetradecenal (8.6%), (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadienal (4.8%), (Z)-11-hexadecenal (49.5%), and (Z)-13-octadecenal (37.1%), were identified in extracts of female pheromone glands of the European sunflower moth,Homoeosoma nebulellum (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) using GC and GC-MS analyses. EAG and single-cell recordings of male antennal receptors gave strong evidence for (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadienal as the antennal key compound of sex pheromone detection in this species. This result was confirmed by field trapping; removal of (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadienal from quaternary blends completely suppressed the male catches. Behavioral observations of the rice moth (Corcyra cephalonica, Pyralidae, Galleriinae) in the laboratory have shown that a male wing-gland pheromone induces attraction of female moths. This pheromone was identified as a blend of (E,E) and (Z,E)-farnesal. Wing-gland extracts or synthetic compounds were shown to be attractive to females by inducing walking.

Bovine odorant-binding protein (bOBP) is a dimeric lipocalin present in large amounts in the respiratory and olfactory nasal mucosa. The structure of bOBP refined at 2.0-Å resolution revealed an elongated volume of electron density inside each buried cavity, indicating the presence of one (or several) naturally occurring copurified ligand(s) (Tegoni et al. (1996)Nat. Struct. Biol. 3, 863–867; Bianchet et al.(1996) Nat. Struct. Biol. 3, 934–939). Variability in pheromone communication among different haplotype populations of Busseola fusca Inra

The relationship between pheromone composition and mitochondrial haplotype clades was investigated by coupling DNA analyses with pheromone identification and male mate searching behavior among different geographic populations of Busseola fusca. The within-population variations in pheromone blend were as great as those observed between geographic populations, suggesting that the female sex pheromone blend was not the basis of reproductive isolation between the geographic clades. Furthermore, while data from wind tunnel experiments demonstrated that most of the tested males were sensitive to small variations in pheromone mixture, there was considerable within-population variability in the observed response.
