Are red mullet efficient as bio-indicators of mercury contamination? A case study from the French Mediterranean ArchiMer
Cresson, Pierre; Bouchoucha, Marc; Miralles, F.; Elleboode, Romain; Mahe, Kelig; Marusczak, Nicolas; Thebault, Herve; Cossa, Daniel.
Mercury (Hg) is one of the main chemicals currently altering Mediterranean ecosystems. Red mullet (Mullus barbatus and M. surmuletus) have been widely used as quantitative bio-indicators of chemical contamination. In this study, we reassess the ability of these species to be used as efficient bio-indicators of Hg contamination by monitoring during 18 months Hg concentrations in muscle tissue of mullet sampled from 5 French Mediterranean coastal areas. Mean concentrations ranged between 0.23 and 0.78 μg g−1 dry mass for both species. Values were consistent with expected contamination patterns of all sites except Corsica. Results confirmed that red mullets are efficient bio-indicators of Hg contamination. Nevertheless, the observed variability in Hg...

Long-term monitoring of data of ambient mercury (Hg) on a global scale to assess its emission, transport, atmospheric chemistry, and deposition processes is vital to understanding the impact of Hg pollution on the environment. The Global Mercury Observation System (GMOS) project was funded by the European Commission (http://www.gmos.eu) and started in November 2010 with the overall goal to develop a coordinated global observing system to monitor Hg on a global scale, including a large network of ground-based monitoring stations, ad hoc periodic oceanographic cruises and measurement flights in the lower and upper troposphere as well as in the lower stratosphere. To date, more than 40 ground-based monitoring sites constitute the global network covering many...

Contribution au développement et à l'amélioration des techniques d'échantillonnage passif (DGT et POCIS) : développment et amélioration techniques EP : II-B-01 (16). Rapport final ArchiMer
Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Munaron, Dominique; Podeur, Christian; Tapie, Nathalie; Budzinski, Helene; Marusczak, Nicolas; Montero, Natalia; Belzunce-segarra, Maria Jesus.
This project is a contribution to the improvement and development of passive sampling techniques. The objectives are: - to develop ways to limit the fouling formation on the samplers requiring prolonged immersion time (POCIS) and ensure a "constant" and reproducible sampling rate - test and validate the DGT developed specifically for Hg wich is a "WFD priority" metal. Key words (thematic and geographical area) :Passive samplers, POCIS, DGT, fouling, sampling rate, Hg, baie du Lazaret , étang de Thau

Seasonal Variations of Total Gaseous Mercury at a French Coastal Mediterranean Site ArchiMer
Marusczak, Nicolas; Castelle, Sabine; De Voguee, Benoist; Knoery, Joel; Cossa, Daniel.
The seasonal variation and spatial distribution of atmospheric particles at three islands in the Taiwan Strait were investigated. Atmospheric particles (PM10) were collected at three offshore islands (i.e., Kinmen islands, Matsu islands, and Penghu Islands) and two coastal regions (i.e., Xiamen and Fuzhou) in the years of 2008–2012. Field sampling results indicated that the average PM10 concentrations at the Kinmen islands were generally higher than other sampling sites, suggesting that a superimposition phenomenon was regularly observed during the air pollution episodes at Kinmen Islands and Xiamen region. PM10 samples were analyzed for their chemical composition, including water-soluble ions, metallic elements, and carbonaceous content. The most abundant...

Sources and exchanges of mercury in the waters of the Northwestern Mediterranean margin ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; De Madron, Xavier Durrieu; Schafer, Jorg; Guedron, Stephane; Marusczak, Nicolas; Castelle, Sabine; Naudin, Jean-jacques.
Ocean margins are focal regions in terms of mercury (Hg) exchanges between the continent and the open sea. The aim of this paper is to describe the distribution and partition of Hg between the gaseous, dissolved and particulate phases in the waters of the Northwestern Mediterranean (NWM) margin, in order to assess the Hg sources and exchanges within the continuum between the continental shelf (Gulf of Lions) and the open sea (Northern Gyre). Mean (± standard deviation) of total Hg species (HgT) concentrations in unfiltered water samples were 1.52 ± 1.00 pmol L-1 (n=36) in the inner shelf, 1.09 ± 0.15 pmol L-1 (n=30) along the slope, and 1.10 ± 0.13 pmol L-1 (n=99) in the Northern Gyre. The dissolved phase (<0.45µm) average concentrations were 0.80 ±...

Springtime changes in snow chemistry lead to new insights into mercury methylation in the Arctic ArchiMer
Larose, Catheririe; Dommergue, Aurelien; De Angelis, Martine; Cossa, Daniel; Averty, Bernard; Marusczak, Nicolas; Soumis, Nicolas; Schneider, Dominique; Ferrari, Christophe.
Seasonal snow is an active media and an important climate factor that governs nutrient transfer in Arctic ecosystems. Since the snow stores and transforms nutrients and contaminants, it is of crucial importance to gain a better understanding of the dynamics of contaminant cycling within the snowpack and its subsequent release to catchments via meltwater. Over the course of a two-month field study in the spring of 2008, we collected snow and meltwater samples from a seasonal snowpack in Ny-Alesund, Norway (78 degrees 56'N, 11 degrees 52'E), which were analyzed for major inorganic ions and some organic acids, as well as total, dissolved, bioavailable mercury (THg, DHg, BioHg, respectively) and monomethylmercury (MMHg) species. We observe a seasonal gradient...
