An example of cooperation between scientist and managers : The Meditearranean Lagoon Network (Languedoc-Roussillon, France) ArchiMer
Laugier, Thierry; Malet, Nathalie; Munaron, Dominique; Derolez, Valerie; Fiandrino, Annie; Barral, Marc; Moragues, Laurent; Mazouni, Nabila; Graille, Chantal.
The poster presents the approach that led to the construction of a network of cooperation between managers and scientists for coastal lagoon management in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon, its architecture and modus operandi, its achievements and developments over time. At the end of the ninety’s, eutrophication and lack of knowledge were identified as issues to enhance the management of coastal lagoons on the Mediterranean coast of France. In 2000, in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon, scientists (Ifremer) and institutional managers (Regional Council of Languedoc-Roussillon and Water Agency Rhône-Méditerranée & Corse) joined their forces in building a network to address this need. The core of this network consists of an operational tool for the...

Assessment of congruence between co-occurrence and functional networks: A new framework for revealing community assembly rules ArchiMer
Legras, Gaëlle; Loiseau, Nicolas; Gaertner, Jean-claude; Poggiale, Jean-christophe; Lenco, Dino; Mazouni, Nabila; Mérigot, Bastien.
Describing how communities change over space and time is crucial to better understand and predict the functioning of ecosystems. We propose a new methodological framework, based on network theory and modularity concept, to determine which type of mechanisms (i.e. deterministic versus stochastic processes) has the strongest influence on structuring communities. This framework is based on the computation and comparison of two networks: the co-occurrence (based on species abundances) and the functional networks (based on the species traits values). In this way we can assess whether the species belonging to a given functional group also belong to the same co-occurrence group. We adapted the Dg index of Gauzens et al. (2015) to analyze congruence between both...

Composition of biofouling communities on suspended oyster cultures: an in situ study of their interactions with the water column ArchiMer
Mazouni, Nabila; Gaertner, J; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc.
This study was based on in situ experiments conducted in a shellfish lagoon (Thau, France) to determine the interactions between suspended oyster Crassostrea gigas Thunberg cultures and their environment at a seasonal scale. Three groups of descriptors were considered simultaneously during the course of the study: the taxonomic composition of an oyster culture unit (OCU), the nutrient and oxygen exchanges at the OCU-water interface (fluxes) and the water-column characteristics (water). We used a multiple factorial analysis (MFA) to assess in a single reference frame: (1) the seasonal organisation of the taxonomic groups which compose the OCU and (2) the interactions between this multispecific assemblage and the water column. We found strong seasonal...

Feeding rate of the oyster Crassostrea gigas in a natural planktonic community of the Mediterranean Thau Lagoon ArchiMer
Dupuy, Christine; Vaquer, André; Lam Hoai, Thong; Rougier, Claude; Mazouni, Nabila; Lautier, Jacques; Collos, Yves; Le Gall, Solange.
The Mediterranean Thau Lagoon is an important oyster farming area in Europe. Oyster growth rates are among the highest in France, although chlorophyll a concentration is low. Previous studies have demonstrated that picophytoplankton, nano-microphytoplankton, dinoflagellates and loricate ciliates such as tintinnids are abundant. However, heterotrophic flagellates and aloricate ciliates have not been investigated. The aim of this study was to assess picophytoplankton, protist and zooplankton abundances in the Lagoon and to investigate the particular structure of the microbial food web, which may explain such paradoxical oyster growth. In oligotrophic waters in the Thau Lagoon, the picoeukaryote Ostreococcus tauri is the dominant autotrophic picoplankter,...

Guide méthodologique d’aide à la prise en compte des problématiques maritimes dès le diagnostic des SCOT côtiers ArchiMer
Rodriguez, Thibault; Fourrier, Adeline; Mazouni, Nabila; Rey-valette, Helene; Roussillon, Jean Philippe; Laugier, Thierry; Loubersac, Lionel.
After a reminder on the program SYSCOLAG (Coastal and Lagoons Systems), of the regulatory and legislative context in territorial economic planning on the coast, we describe the structure of the developed methodological tool. We clarify then the method according to its three main trunk roads: effects of the activities and uses on the economy of the territory, the effects of the activities and uses on the natural environment and the living environment, the evaluation of the interactions between activities and uses. We apply the method exposed in a frame demonstrator by taking the scenario of the lagoon and coastal territory of the Thau Basin (Hérault). A set of appendices, including in particular evaluation grids are supplied with support for the...

Mazouni, Nabila; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Landrein, Sonia.
The impact of suspended oyster culture (Crassostrea gigas, Thunberg) on oxygen and nutrient fluxes has been studied in situ, in a coastal lagoon (Thau, France), during a seasonal cycle. On the first plan of the multiple factorial correspondences analysis (MCA), seasons were well discriminated. The fluxes were maximum in summer and minimum in winter. However, this seasonal pattern was not only linked to the water temperature, as autumn and spring (similar temperatures of about 12 degrees C) were distinct in the second factorial plan (2.3). Oxygen uptake by the oyster cultures varied between 0 mu mol m(-2) h(-1) (January) and 11 823 +/- 377 mu mol m(-2) h(-1) (July). Ammonia and nitrate-nitrites were released into the water column respectively at a rate of...

1 - In the Thau lagoon (Southern Mediterranean Coast) the main anthropogenic pressure is represented by the urban development in the watershed, whilst oyster and mussel farming represents one of the main economical activities in the region. 2 - During the last decade, the increasing organic loads from watershed and urban settlements in the lagoon surroundings have caused a diffuse contamination by faecal bacteria. Also toxic algal blooms have been occurring, impairing water quality with major impacts on shellfish farming, fishery and bathing. 3 - In this study, indicators and scenarios identified for the lagoon have been integrated in a Decision Support System (DSS) to evaluate the best solutions for reducing pressures and improving both water quality and...

Modélisation des cycles de l'azote et du phosphore dans les sédiments d'une lagune soumise à une exploitation conchylicole ArchiMer
Chapelle, Annie; Mesnage, Valérie; Mazouni, Nabila; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Picot, Bernadette.
A simulation of nitrogen and phosphorus exchanges for the sediment-water interface is presented, The aim of the sttudy is to understand the dynamic behaviour of an eutrophie coastal lagoon (Thau, France), ln situ experiments were performed to estimate the different pools of nitrogen and phosphorus in the water column and in the sediment. The diffusive fluxes between them were also estimated. A numerical mode1, simulating nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, was developed and calibrated with data recorded .at two seasons (winter and summer). This study leads to the conclusion that is necessary to know the different pools of nitrogen and phosphorus in order to estimate which fraction is bioavailable and the rate of nutrient exchange between sediment and water. It...

Modelling nitrogen, primary production and oxygen in a Mediterranean lagoon. Impact of oysters farming and inputs from the watershed ArchiMer
Chapelle, Annie; Menesguen, Alain; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Souchu, Philippe; Mazouni, Nabila; Vaquer, André; Millet, Bertrand.
An ecosystem model based on nitrogen cycling and oxygen has been developed for the Thau lagoon. It takes into account the specific features of this Mediterranean lagoon, a semi-confined system with watershed inputs and oyster farming. The ecosystem model uses currents calculated by a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model and integrated into a box model. This model is compared with a year survey data and used to estimate nitrogen and oxygen fluxes between the different ecosystem compartments. The yearly simulation shows that the ecosystem behavior is driven by meteorological forcing, especially rain which causes watershed inputs. These inputs trigger microphytoplankton growth, which is responsible for new primary production. During dry periods, nitrogen is...

Oxygen fluxes involving the benthic micro- and macrophytic components in the Thau Lagoon under pre-anoxic conditions ArchiMer
Plante Cuny, Marie-reine; Plante, Raphaël; Mazouni, Nabila; Fontaine, Marie-france; Souchu, Philippe; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Grenz, Christian.
Measurements of oxygen fluxes at the water-sediment interface (transparent and opaque enclosures) were made on bare sediments inhabited by microphytes on the one hand, and on sediments diversely colonized by macrophytes (macroalgae and seagrasses) on the other hand. Five stations, typical of different biotopes of a Mediterranean shallow lagoon were studied from May to July 1993 in order to observe an anoxic event which usually occurs at that time of the year. Average diurnal respiration of benthic communities ranged from 40 mg (or 1.25 mmol) O-2 m(-2) h(-1) in bare sediments (31 % of the lagoon area) to 76 mg (or 2.37 mmol) O-2 m(-2) h(-1) in sediments with a medium coverage of macroalgae (37 % of the total area) and, finally, to 100 mg (or 3.12 mmol) O-2...

Reproducibility of the multi-component aspect of species diversity across different areas and scales: towards the constitution of a shortlist of complementary indices for monitoring fish diversity? ArchiMer
Gaertner, Jean-claude; Merigot, Bastien; Relini, Giulio; Bertrand, Jacques; Mazouni, Nabila; Politou, Chrissi-yianna; Gil De Sola, Luis; Kallianiotis, Argyris; Carpentieri, Paolo; Murenu, Matteo; Durbec, Jean-pierre; Vrgoc, Nedo; Ungaro, Nicola.
Recent theoretical and field studies conducted in both terrestrial and marine ecosystems have suggested that diversity could be a more complex and multi-component concept than previously thought. However, it is still poorly understood to what extent the information provided by the various indices is complementary with regard to diversity, and to what extent this complementarity is reproducible in different situations or at different scales of observation. In the present work, we have analysed the reproducibility of the empirical relationships between 11 diversity indices related to four major aspects (components) of species diversity (species richness, rarity, evenness and species taxonomy) in order to determine whether there is a general pattern of...

Mazouni, Nabila; Loubersac, Lionel; Rey Valette, Hélène; Libourel, T; Maurel, P; Desconnets, J-c..
The SYSCOLAG programme is a pilot operation at national level for experimenting with a knowledge-pooling system applied to the field of integrated coastal area management (ICAM). SYSCOLAG aims to constitute an interface between 'knowledge' and the users of knowledge' on questions related to the conservation and the development of the coastal zone of the Languedoc-Roussillon. To that end, SYSCOLAG offers both a transdisciplinary approach associating life sciences, earth sciences, social and informatic sciences and multistakeholders approach (associating scientists, decision-makers, professional users of the sea, environmental protection associations, and the general public) to integrated management of the coastal zone of the Languedoc-Roussillon. The system...
