A new concept for the control of Elytrigia repens in organic crop production Organic Eprints
Melander, Bo; Nørremark, Michael; Fløjgaard, Erik.
The control of perennial weeds in organic crop production needs reconsideration to minimise losses of nutrients through leaching. Long post-harvest periods with mechanical weed control hinder a plant cover with the purpose of taking up nutrients not being utilised by the main crop to maintain soil fertility. To meet the interests of nutrient and weed management, we suggest a new concept for the control of perennial weeds with propagules placed within the plough layer. The concept comprises uprooting and immediate removal of Elytrigia repens rhizomes with modified machinery to allow for a quick re-establishment of a plant cover to avoid longer periods of bare soil. Four passes with a modified cultivator where each pass was followed by rhizome removal and...

Advanced Non-Chemical and Close to Plant Weed Control system for Organic Agriculture Organic Eprints
Nørremark, Michael; Swain, Kishore; Melander, Bo.
Use of chemical has been reduced in agriculture for controlling weeds emergence. The use of alternative systems, such as cultural practices (mulching, flame, intercropping etc.) and mechanical system (hoe, tine etc.) has been introduced by various researchers. Automation technique based on sensors controlled system has enhanced the efficiency of the mechanical system for weed control. Mostly, low cost image acquisition sensors and optical sensor to detect the plant ensuring swift operation of vehicles close the crop plants to remove competitive weeds. The available system need to be evaluated to get best possible system for close to plant (CTP) weed removal. In the study various non-chemical weed control measures has been explored and 30 mechanical tools...

Balance i ukrudtsbestanden Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Melander, Bo.

Band-steaming for intra-row weed control Organic Eprints
Melander, Bo; Heisel, Torben.
Steaming the soil prior to crop sowing has the potential of eliminating weed seedling emergence completely. Thus, steaming might be a perspective technique for intra-row weed control in non-herbicidal row crops of high value, where manual weeding can be very laborious. This paper presents some preliminary results with the effects of steaming on weed seedling emergence. The work is part of a joint project involving both biological and technical aspects of steaming. The overall objective is to develop an applicable technique for applying steam in bands corresponding to the intra-row area of a row crop. Band-steaming is expected to use much less energy as compared to current steaming techniques for arable usage.

Band-steaming reduces laborious hand-weeding in vegetables Organic Eprints
Melander, Bo; Jørgensen, Martin H.; Elsgaard, Lars.
Band-steaming is a new method that may reduce the need for hand-weeding in demanding row crops like carrot and drilled onion. Band-steaming only affects a soil volume equal to the intra-row area of the subsequent crop, and effectively kills the weed seeds in this soil volume. Side-effects on beneficial soil organisms are minimized as compared to current steaming technology, but still need to be assessed.

Cirsium arvense responses to stubble cultivation and catch crops in organic cropping systems Organic Eprints
Holst, Niels; Melander, Bo; Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Hansen, Preben Klarskov.
Field studies on perennial weeds, such as Cirsium arvense, are necessary to study the systemic effects of weed control. In this study we analyse the responses in above-ground C. arvense biomass and crop yield from results obtained in two organic field experiments, both combining stubble cultivation with post-harvest catch crops. A range of catch crops was investigated, varying in both species mixture and method of establishment, yet stubble cultivation was the only treatment found to reduce C. arvense density. The effect was even seen only in one year when a harsh winter acted synergistically with soil tillage. C. arvense exhibited density-dependent growth, in terms of above-ground biomass at harvest, with an estimated max. exponential growth rate of...

Combining mechanical rhizome removal and cover crops for Elytrigia repens control in organic barley systems Organic Eprints
Melander, Bo; Nørremark, Michael; Kristensen, E.F..
Mechanical weed control of perennial weeds in organic crop production over long post-harvest periods is incompatible with the establishment of cover crops for improving soil quality and preventing nutrient leaching. We suggest a new concept that comprises uprooting and immediate removal of vegetative propagules located within the plough layer to allow for quick re-establishment of a plant cover. A field experiment comparing the effects of conventional practices (stubble cultivation) with different combinations of rotary cultivation (1, 2 or 4 passes) and cover crops (none vs rye-vetch-mustard mixture) on Elytrigia repens rhizome removal, shoot growth and suppression of a subsequent barley crop were examined in two growing seasons. Four passes with a...

Common Couch-grass control with less tillage Organic Eprints
Melander, Bo; Rasmussen, Ilse A; Bertelsen, Inger.
Control of Common Couch-grass often conflicts with the need to retain nutrients in organic cropping systems, as it involves intensive tillage in the post-harvest period. Thus, preferably the soil should be cropped through the entire year to prevent nutrient leaching from the root zone. Research has shown that new control strategies may combine the reduction of couch infestations and a soil cover with plants during the post-harvest period. This may have potential for practical implementation.

Cover crops in cereals – better companions than weeds? Organic Eprints
Salonen, Jukka; Zarina, Livija; Melander, Bo.
Cover crops have gained popularity in cereal cropping now that they are one of the subsidized options in agri-environmental schemes of the EU. Several studies on cover/catch crops affecting nutrient leaching have been published but less information is available concerning their applicability for weed management. In our opinion, combinations of crop and cover crop types as well as crop sequencing conform IPM principles and optimize weed management. The PRODIVA project (ERA-Net Core Organic Plus Action, www.coreorganicplus.org) aims at identifying weed community associations with most common crop types in organic crop production systems. We will clarify the characteristics and relative competitiveness of cover crops providing strong weed suppression without...

Crop diversification and weeds Acronym: PRODIVA Organic Eprints
Melander, Bo; Gerowitt, Bärbel; Salonen, Jukka; Verwijst, Theo; Lundkvist, Anneli; Zarina, Livija; Hofmeijer, Merel A.J.; Sylwia, Kaczmarek; Roman, Krawczyk.
Diversification of crop sequences (WP 1): Perennial weed species can be managed when cover crops / green manure crops are included in the crop sequence but interventions must be species dependent, e.g. Elytrigia repens can be promoted by green manures because they prevent post-harvest cultivations. Cirsium arvense and Sonchus arvensis are two perennials that can be controlled by full-season grass-clover subjected to regular mowing for green manuring purposes and this measure has immediate application. Cover crops for diversification (WP 1):  Fast growing cover crops producing copious biomasses are generally useful for the suppression of weeds but need to be abandoned when severe infestations of Elytrigia repens require post-harvest cultivations for...
