Differential biomagnification of PCB, PBDE, Hg and Radiocesium in the food web of the European hake from the NW Mediterranean ArchiMer
Harmelin-vivien, Mireille; Bodiguel, Xavier; Charmasson, Sabine; Loizeau, Veronique; Mellon, Capucine; Tronczynski, Jacek; Cossa, Daniel.
Consumption of marine organisms represents one of the main exposure sources of contaminants for human populations. To obtain a global view of the contamination in commercial fish in the NW Mediterranean Sea, we analysed four types of priority contaminants (PCBs, PBDEs, Hg and Cs-137) in the European hake, Merluccius merluccius, from the Gulf of Lions in relation with organism's trophic level (delta N-15). All contaminants presented a significant increase in concentration in hake muscle with trophic level. However, obvious differences between contaminants were evidenced. Biomagnification factors (BMF and FWMF) along the hake food web were higher for Hg and CB-153 than for BDE-47 and Cs-137, and increase in contaminant concentration with trophic level...

Beaubrun, Pierre; Roos, David; Astruc, Guillelme; Conejero, Sandrine; Renard, Delphine; Bigot, Jean-louis; Liorzou, Bernard; Le Corre, Gildas; Mellon, Capucine.

ArchiMer
Mellon, Capucine; Charuau, Anatole; Tetard, Alain.
Fisheries are managed by stocks. A stock is defined by species and geographical area. Their management is international including all the countries which have a fishing activity in each geographical area. The International Council for Exploration of the Sea (ICES) is an international structure which undertakes to organize working groups each year. The groups are made up of scientists from different countries. Those experts are put in charge of assessing the most important stocks. The main results of these assessments are described in that report. The most important French and international landings of demersal fishes and nephrops in North-Eastern Atlantic are presented in the introduction of the report. The species are cod, whiting, saithe, haddock, sole,...

Implementation of an end-to-end model of the Gulf of Lions ecosystem (NW Mediterranean Sea). I. Parameterization, calibration and evaluation ArchiMer
Bănaru, Daniela; Diaz, Fréderic; Verley, Philippe; Campbell, Rose; Navarro, Jonathan; Yohia, Christophe; Oliveros-ramos, Ricardo; Mellon, Capucine; Shin, Yunne-jai.
An end-to-end model named OSMOSE-GoL has been built for the Gulf of Lions, the main French Mediterranean fishing area. This spatialized dynamic model links the coupled hydrodynamic and biogeochemical model Eco3M-S/SYMPHONIE (LTL – low trophic level model) to OSMOSE (HTL – high trophic level model). It includes 15 compartments of living organisms, five from the LTL model (i.e. nanophytoplankton, microphytoplankton, nanozooplankton, microzooplankton and mesozooplankton) and ten from the HTL model (northern krill, southern shortfin squid, European pilchard, European anchovy, European sprat, Atlantic horse mackerel, Atlantic mackerel, blue whiting, European hake and Atlantic bluefin tuna). With the exception of northern krill and European sprat, all HTL...

Les stocks de poissons démersaux sous quota
en Manche Est et mer du Nord ArchiMer
Mellon, Capucine.
Cod (Gadus morhua, L.), whiting (Merlangius merlangus, L.), saithe (Pollachius virens, L.), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus, L.), sole (Solea vulgaris, L.) and plaice (Pleuronectes platessa, L.) make up the main demersal stocks under quota which concern the French fishery in North Sea and Eastern English Channel. The diagnosis on the state of stocks are set up at the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). Recommendations which result from the analyses are proposed to the European Union. Most of the stocks are close or outside their safe biological limits. Several reasons account for that such as the high fishing mortality rates and mixed fisheries on species with diverse biological characteristics. Consequently, more and more young...

Possible link between prey quality, condition and growth of juvenile hake (Merluccius merluccius) in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Harmelin Vivien, Mireille; Mahe, Kelig; Bodiguel, Xavier; Mellon, Capucine.
The energy value of the main prey and the growth of juvenile hake in the Gulf of Lions were analysed to determine whether fish condition could be linked to difference in prey quality and resulted in growth difference. Large differences in energy content (15.6 to 23.6 kJ g(-1) DW) among prey types were recorded with low values found in amphipods and natantid shrimps, intermediate values in euphausiids and mysids, and high values in fish. High condition in juvenile hake was linked to the consumption of prey with high energy content. However, no difference in fish growth was observed by the analysis of otolith micro-increments.

Second rapport d'étape du groupe de réflexion sur les aménagements physiques en zone côtière et leur gestion pour l'aquaculture et la pêche ArchiMer
Dao, Jean-claude; Lacroix, Denis; Lagardere, J. P.; Mellon, Capucine; Veron, Gerard.

Trophic ecology of the European Hake in the Gulf of Lions, Northwestern Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Mellon, Capucine; Harmelin-vivien, Mireille; Metral, Luisa; Loizeau, Veronique; Mortreux, Serge; Roos, David; Fromentin, Jean-marc.
The European hake, Merluccius merluccius, is an important resource for Mediterranean fisheries. This study focuses on juvenile and adult hake feeding ecology in the Gulf of Lions, using information from scientific surveys carried out during two seasons and three years (2004-2006). Stomach content and stable isotope (ä15N, ä13C) analyses were performed, and the main factors explaining variations in ä15N were investigated using GLMs. In the Gulf of Lions, hake mostly fed on crustaceans and fish and a dominant piscivorous regime was reached at 15 cm total length. Pelagic fish (sardine, anchovy and small blue whiting) were the main source of prey (40%-80%) and cannibalism was low (<5%). The results confirmed that hake is an opportunistic feeder and also...

Trophic structure in the Gulf of Lions marine ecosystem (north-western Mediterranean Sea) and fishing impacts ArchiMer
Banaru, Daniela; Mellon, Capucine; Roos, David; Bigot, Jean-louis; Souplet, Arnauld; Jadaud, Angelique; Beaubrun, P.; Fromentin, Jean-marc.
The Gulf of Lions ecosystemwas described using the Ecopath mass-balancemodel to characterise its structure and functioning and to examine the effects of themultispecific fisheries operating in this area. The model is composed of 40 compartments, including 1 group of seabirds, 2 groups of etaceans, 18 groups of fish, 12 groups of invertebrates, 5 groups of primary producers, detritus and discards. Input datawere based on several recurrent scientific surveys, two alternative datasets for fishing data, stock assessment outputs, stomach content analyses and published information. Results showed that the functional groups were organised into five trophic levels with the highest one represented by dolphins, anglerfish, Atlantic bluefin tuna, European hake and...
