Annual cycle of subsurface thermal structure in the Tropical Atlantic ocean IRD

The subsurface thermal structure in the Tropical Atlantic ocean (30°N-20°S, East of 80°W) is studied on the basis of an extensive data bank of subsurface soundings. Calendar monthly maps are presented showing mixed layer depth, base of thermocline, thermocline thickness, and vertical temperature gradient across the thermocline. These maps are complemented by vertical cross sections depicting mixed layer depth, base of thermocline, and selected isotherms : a zonal profile along the equator (50°W-10°E), a meridional transect across the Eastern Atlantic (4°N-18°S), and a meridional section across the Central Atlantic (30°N-18°S). Annual signal and interannual anomalies of sea surface temperature in the Eastern Equatorial Atlantic ocean IRD

Analysis of historical data including coastal and open ocean data provides a quantitative description of the characteristics of the sea surface annual signal and of the interannual anomalies in the Eastern Equatorial Atlantic ocean. The annual signal has a larger amplitude than the interannual anomalies but has considerable spatial variations. In two regions, namely the Northern coast of the Gulf of Guinea and the equator, both annual and interannual variability are particularly large because of a seasonal surfacing of the thermocline. Assimilation of temperature profiles in a general circulation model of the Tropical Atlantic IRD

Thirty-six hundred temperature profiles collected during 1984 were assimilated into a multilayer primitive equation model of the Tropical ocean. The method consists in a monthly correction of the simulated temperature field. Each month, an observed field is computed from the temperature profiles with a successive correction analysis starting from the simulated field. The difference between the observed field and simulation is computed, the model is restarted from the previous month, progressively introducing the difference as a Newton forcing in the heat equation. A partir d'une étude de données historiques de température pour l'Altantique intertropical, les variations saisonnières de la structure thermique des couches superficielles sont étudiées en utilisant une série de Fourier limitée aux termes annuel et semi-annuel. Ceci conduit à une bonne représentation des variations observées, et permet d'étendre au large, ce qui était connu à la côte dans le Golfe de Guinée (alternances dans l'année d'une grande et d'une petite saisons chaudes marines). En outre, ceci conduit à mettre en évidence des contrastes très marqués des variations saisonnières à la fois dans le sens méridien et dans le sens zonal, et de préciser la climatologie marine de ce secteur de l'océan. L'environnement climatique du Pacifique Sud est conditionné par "l'extrême océanité" de la région et l'interaction étroite entre l'atmosphère et l'océan qui conditionne la vie et l'ensemble des paramètres environnementaux des pays insulaires. Equatorial adjusment in the Eastern Atlantic IRD

Observations suggest that the annual upwelling event in the Gulf of Guinea is not associated with changes in the local winds. A possible explanation is that a strong upwelling signal, generated by increased westward wind stress in the Western Atlantic as an equatorially trapped Kelvin wave. Equatorial upwelling at 4°W during the FOCAL program IRD

Une analyse des mesures continues de vent, de température et de courants, obtenues à partir d'une ligne de mouillage de surface déployée à O-4°W de février 1983 à septembre 1984 pendant Focal (Programme Français Océan-Climat dans l'Atlantique Equatorial), a permis, en liaison avec les mesures de température et de courants obtenues le long du méridien 4°W et entre les latitudes 1°30N et 1°30S, lors des campagnes océanographiques effectuées en février, avril, août, novembre 1983 et février, mai et juillet 1984, de préciser la variabilité saisonnière de la structure thermique à 0-4°W, et de montrer que les refroidissements observés à la surface durant l'été boréal, pouvaient être, en partie, expliqués par les distributions locales du vent et des courants....

Evidence of remote forcing in the Equatorial Atlantic ocean IRD

An analysis of sea-surface temperature (STT) and surface winds in selected areas of the Tropical Atlantic indicates that the nonseasonal variability of SST in the Eastern Equatorial Atlantic (Gulf of Guinea) is highly correlated with the nonseasonal variability of the zonal wind stress in the Western Equatorial Atlantic. A negative (positive) anomaly of the zonal wind stress near the North Brazilian coast is followed by a positive (negative) SST anomaly in the Gulf of Guinea about one month later. Furthermore, the correlation betweenthe local winds stress anomaly and STT anomaly in the Gulf of Guinea is considerably smaller.
