100 % organic ration works for organic table birds Organic Eprints
Woodward, Lawrence; O'Brien, Josie.
Poultry researcher Josie O’Brien and Lawrence Woodward present some results from a series of EFRC trials that are questioning the need for the conventional feed derogation in organic poultry production. Currently the use of up to twenty percent of non-organic components is allowed in the feed ration of organically certified table birds. Although this derogation is supposed to be removed in August 2005, there is mounting pressure to allow it to continue in some form. The derogation was introduced due to concerns that without it the bird’s nutritional needs could not be met by certified organic sources alone and therefore their health, welfare and growth would be compromised. The primary concern relates to amino acid levels and in particular methionine....

Developing an Agro-forestry System for Production of a Commercial Organic Chicken Flock Focusing on Profits on a ‘Triple Bottom Line’ Organic Eprints
Aspray, Claire; O'Brien, Josie; Philipps, Lois.
In most modern free-range poultry systems birds do not fully utilise the range provided. Knowledge of the ancestral history of the domestic chicken, combined with research observations suggests benefits of agro-forestry systems for chickens. A commercial organic poultry agro-forestry system was developed for Sheepdrove Organic Farm, Berkshire, UK, affording the benefits of an agro-forestry system, whilst retaining commercial viability. Five avenues of highly diverse parallel hedges incorporating tree, shrub and herb species were planted. On-going monitoring of the system was put in place to evaluate its development. The programme consists of monitoring: 1) biodiversity 2) soil nutrient status and respiration 3) behaviour and welfare of the poultry....

Investigation into the effect of “day one weight” on bird weight gain of ISA 257 table birds within the Sheepdrove Organic Farm organic silvo-poultry system Organic Eprints
O'Brien, Josie.
This report summarises the results of a preliminary trial undertaken to investigate the effect of day one chick weight on weight gain and final weight. The objectives of the trial were to ascertain the range in weights of day old chicks brought on to the farm and establish if any low or high weights were impacting on the weight gain and final weight of the birds. A sub-sample of the brooder intake of birds was weighed on arrival and marked in accordance with their weight. Marked birds were caught and re-marked weekly. At week four, prior to the move of the birds to the field sheds, the marked birds were caught weighed and re-marked. It was at this point that the trial was abandoned as, of the 150 birds marked at the start of the trial period, only 48...

Sheepdrove Organic Farm Breed and Feed 1a Interim Report Organic Eprints
O'Brien, Josie.
• This interim report summarises the results of the first part of the breed and feed 1 trial, a final report will follow the completion of the second half of the trial. • The trial was undertaken to investigate the impact of removing the Soil Association derogation for 20 per cent non-organic component in organic table bird feed ration. • The trial was also investigating the suitability of the ISA 257 breed currently used in the SOF system, as it has been questioned as to whether it is the most appropriate genotype to use. • The objectives of the trial were to ascertain if there are differences between the performance of two genotypes of organic free-range table birds (ISA 257 and colourpac) and two ration types (80 per cent and 100 per cent organic)...
