A comparison of coincidental time series of the ocean surface height by satellite altimeter, mooring, and inverted echo sounder IRD

Altimetric measurements of sea surface height at two locations in the western tropical Pacific Ocean are compared to estimates of the dynamic sea surface height computed from cotemporal surface-to-bottom temperature/salinity measurements on moorings and acoustic travel time measured by bottom-moored inverted echo sounders. The results show statistically high correlation between the in situ measurements at periods greater than 5 days and between the altimeter and in situ measurements at periods greater than 20 days. The rms difference between any two modes of observation is consistently between 2 and 3 cm. (Résumé d'auteur)

A model study of potential sampling errors due to data scatter around expendable bathythermograph transects in the Tropical Pacific IRD

We describe a series of sampling sensitivy experiments to examine potential errors due to data scatter around expendable bathythermograph (XBT) transects in the tropical Pacific. We use a linear, multiple vertical mode model forced with three differrent monthly mean wind stress sets for the period 1979-1983. The model is sampled along approximately straight lines of grid points corresponding to the mean positions of XBT tracks in the eastern, central, and western Pacific and then sampled again at the dates and location of actual XBT casts for 1979-1983. Amélioration des systèmes d'observations pour la surveillance en temps réel de la structure thermique du Pacifique tropical IRD

Grâce à l'aide du MRES, le groupe de recherche d'océanographie physique SURTROPAC, du Centre ORSTOM de Nouméa-Nouvelle-Calédonie a pu s'impliquer à fond dans une coopération internationale de mise en place et d'analyse des données issues d'un nouveau réseau de mesures dans le Pacifique. Ce réseau est constitué d'un ensemble de bouées, mouillées par grand fond, et équipées de chaîne à thermistance, de capteur de vent et d'un transmetteur de données ARGOS. Il permet de suivre en temps quasi réel la variabilité des vents de surface et de la structure thermique des couches de sub-surface de l'Océan Pacifique Equatorial et d'en comprendre les mécanismes. Dans le Pacifique tropical, la concentration de données du réseau XBT (expendable bathythermograph) ORSTOM-SIO (Scripps Institutio of Oceanography) autour de trois rails de navigation a permis de construire des champs de températures et de courants géostrophiques. Afin d'obtenir des champs de températures les plus précis possible, le fichier original ORSTOM-SIO a été tout d'abord triplé par la récupération d'un maximum de données XBT et de quelques données hydrologiques et de sondes CTD (conductivité, température, profondeur) auprès de différents services océanographiques. Equatorial adjusment in the Eastern Atlantic IRD

Observations suggest that the annual upwelling event in the Gulf of Guinea is not associated with changes in the local winds. A possible explanation is that a strong upwelling signal, generated by increased westward wind stress in the Western Atlantic as an equatorially trapped Kelvin wave. Equatorial Kelvin and Rossby waves evinced in the Pacific ocean through GEOSAT sea level and surface current anomalies IRD

Equatorial Kelvin and Rossby waves are comprehensively demonstrated over most of the equatorial Pacific basin, through their signatures in sea level and zonal surface geostrophic current anomalies. This was made possible with altimeter data pertaining to the first year of the Geosat (Geodetic Satellite) 17-day exact repeat orbit (November 8, 1986, to November 8, 1987). To this end, along-track corrected Geosat sea level anomalies (SLAs), relative to the time period of interest, were first smoothed using nonlinear and linear filters. The original 17-day time step was then reduced by combining all ascending and descending tracks within 10° longitudinal bands. Evidence of remote forcing in the Equatorial Atlantic ocean IRD

An analysis of sea-surface temperature (STT) and surface winds in selected areas of the Tropical Atlantic indicates that the nonseasonal variability of SST in the Eastern Equatorial Atlantic (Gulf of Guinea) is highly correlated with the nonseasonal variability of the zonal wind stress in the Western Equatorial Atlantic. A negative (positive) anomaly of the zonal wind stress near the North Brazilian coast is followed by a positive (negative) SST anomaly in the Gulf of Guinea about one month later. Furthermore, the correlation betweenthe local winds stress anomaly and STT anomaly in the Gulf of Guinea is considerably smaller. Evolution of the Western Pacific ocean during the 1986-1987 El Nino IRD

A series of 12 meridional transect along longitude 165°E in the Western Equatorial Pacific ocean were made between mid-1986 and mi-1988 : a time interval spanning an El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event. Data collected on these cruises provide a detailed (albeit temporally sparse) view of the oceanic changes which occur in the Western Pacific during an ENSO event. The present work focuses on the evolution of the upper ocean thermohaline and zona velocity fields as revealed by high resolution hydrographic casts and direct near surface velocity measurements. GEOSAT sea level anomalies in the Western equatorial Pacific during the 1986-87 El Nino, elucidated as equatorial Kelvin and Rossby waves IRD

Thanks to the GEOSAT altimeter data set, information on sea level changes during the 1986-87 El Nino is presented. Special emphasis is placed on the warm pool area, with an evaluation, a detailed description and tentative explanation of the observed Sea Level Anomaly (SLA) changes. Near the 165°E longitude,the onset of the 1986-87 El Nino is characterized by a rapid development of a positive (> 14 cm) equatorial SLA in november-december 1986. This feature occurs in response to an eastward wind anomaly appearing between 140°E-170°W along the equator. L'analyse du niveau de la mer déduit des mesures du satellite Geosat, pendant la période novembre 1986-novembre 1987, a montré la présence d'ondes longues équatoriales de basse fréquence se propageant dans la majeure partie de l'océan Pacifique équatorial (Delcroix et al., 1991). La succession d'ondes de Kelvin de downwelling et d'upwelling et d'une onde de Rossby d'upwelling soulèveune série de questions. L'onde de Rossby d'upwelling est-elle générée par une réflexion sur le bord est de l'océan ou directement par le forçage du vent au voisinage de l'équateur ? Pourquoi n'observe-t-on pas la réflexion de l'onde de Kelvin de downwelling ? La séquence d'ondes observée est-elle caractéristique de l'évènement El Nino 1986-1987, ou bien peut-elle être détectée...

Large-scale current and thermohaline structures along 156°E during the COARE intensive observation period IRD

From December 1992 to February 1993, 18 meridional sections of temperature, salinity, and current were collected along 156°E, from 5°S to 5°N, during the Intensive Observation Period of the Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Response Experiment. The average conditions were characteristic of the ongoing El Nino event, with a relatively shallow thermocline and fresh surface waters. Mechanism of the zonal displacements of the Pacific warm pool : implications for ENSO IRD

The western equatorial Pacific warm pool is subject to strong east-west migrations on interannual time scales in phase with the Southern Oscillation Index. The dominance of surface zonal advection in this migration is demonstrated with four different current data sets and three ocean models. The eastward advection of warm and less saline water from the western Pacific together with the westward advection of cold and more saline water from the central-eastern Pacific induces a convergence of water masses at the eastern edge of the warm pool and a well-defined salinity front.
