Comparison of two methods for evaluating waste of a flow through trout farm ArchiMer
Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Boujard, Thierry; Aubin, Joel; Moutounet, Yves; Przybyla, Cyrille; Belaud, Alain.
European water legislation enforces increasingly restrictive measures with regards to reduction of water consumption and waste emission in order to minimise the potential environmental impact of the agro industry sector. Fish farms are particularly concerned, but legislation covering effluent discharge varies significantly from country to country. However, recommendations and directives from institutional, national or regional bodies suggest the enforcement of increasingly strict waste reduction measures and the development of waste treatment. Before treatment, it is necessary to evaluate waste production in terms of composition and quantity. The waste quantification methods used today for fish culture systems are either based on direct measurements of...

Effect of dietary water content on European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) growth and disease resistance ArchiMer
Przybyla, Cyrille; Fievet, Julie; Callier, Myriam; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
The effect of dietary water content on Dicentrarchus labrax growth parameters and resistance to Vibrio anguillarum infection was investigated using commercial pellets with identical energy contents and different moisture levels. The first experiment hypothesis was that moisturizing pelleted ration can have an impact on Dicentrarchus labrax growth performance by the osmoregulation energy cost reduction. In a second time, the experiment explores the effect of water addition in pellets on the fish resistance to a disease. A specific device was built to uniformly moisturize dry pellets to different moisture levels, i.e. 8%, 20%, 40% and 60%. After an acclimation period and a 54-day rearing period, the control fish had grown from 72.7 +/- 17.9 g to 133.3 +/-...

Fish growth and health aspects of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) reared in standard vs. high rate algal pond recirculation systems ArchiMer
Mladineo, Ivona; Bocina, Ivana; Przybyla, Cyrille; Fievet, Julie; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
Recirculation aquaculture system (RAS) is the type of land-based aquaculture production that interferes the least with the environment, particularly due to low effluent volume and overall water requirement. Water reuse, sometimes limited by the accumulation of waste products excreted by fish, can be improved by incorporating another biotechnical component in the form of high rate algal pond (RAS+HRAP), thus adding to the economy and self sustainability of the system. Our goal was to evaluate whether rearing fish for 1 year in a RAS or RAS+HRAP led to differences in fish production and health, by assessing: (1) fish growth; (2) impact on the morphological structure of sea bass target tissues (liver, kidney, and spleen); (3) susceptibility to monogenean...

Jellyfish as an alternative source of food for opportunistic fishes ArchiMer
Marques, Raquel; Bouvier, Corinne; Darnaude, Audrey M.; Molinero, Juan-carlos; Przybyla, Cyrille; Soriano, Solenn; Tomasini, Jean-antoine; Bonnet, Delphine.
Although scientific interest on jellyfish ecology has substantially increased in the last decades, little is known on the role of potential predators shaping their population dynamics. Jellyfish were long considered as ‘dead ends’ within food webs, and therefore overlooked as potential food source for higher trophic levels, e.g. fishes. Here this question is tackled by using comprehensive laboratory experiments assessing fish predation on jellyfish. The approach included all the life stages (polyps, ephyrae and medusa) of Aurelia sp. versus more traditional aquaculture feeds in an easily farmed opportunistic fish, the gilthead seabream Sparus aurata (L.). Results revealed that all life stages of Aurelia sp. were accepted as a source of food by S. aurata,...

Long-term effects of moderate elevation of oxidation–reduction potential on European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) in recirculating aquaculture systems ArchiMer
Li, Xian; Przybyla, Cyrille; Triplet, Sebastien; Liu, Ying; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
The long term effects of moderate elevation ORP (oxidation–reduction potential) around 300–320 mV on the growth, hematological parameters and the ability of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) to react against bacterial infection was studied in recirculating aquaculture systems (RASs). Two RASs, one with a moderate ozonation (RAS-O3) and a control (RAS-C) were used in this experiment. After 60 days, seabass reared in the RAS-O3 were more able to react against a Vibrio anguillarum infection. It was in spite of the fact that seabass in the RAS-O3 showed decreased feed intake, feed conversion rate, growth rate and modified hematological parameters compared with the fish in RAS-C. It is obvious that an ORP level of 300–320 mV is too high for seabass to...

Manufacture of "fresh/wet" aquaculture feeds based on by-catches, fish by-products and algae ArchiMer
Doudard, Karine; Chim, Liet; Arhaliass, Abdellah; Przybyla, Cyrille; Baron, Regis.
This work focuses on available bio resources transformation such as by-catches or fish by-products and marine plants (seaweed and microalgae) as ren circuit . The objective is to make this production as autonomous and sustainable as possible and fitted to the idea of circular economy. Thanks to previous projects, it seems that by-catches could be a plentiful source of proteins for fish. The challenge associated with this type of aquaculture formulations relies on the ability to incorporate abundant resources readily available and the significant reduction of certain energy‐consuming steps (such as drying) in order to minimize the environmental impact of a fish feed production. The adequacy of this strategy (fresh raw material and wet feed) with a...
