Over fifteen years have elapsed since the transition from the centrally planned economic system started in the early 1990’s. During this time agricultural and rural areas of Central and Eastern Europe have undergone profound structural changes with wide variations in the degree of transformation and in the rate of success in creating a competitive market and private ownership based food and agricultural system. By becoming member of the European Union the "transition" in its traditional interpretation has been concluded in ten of the Central East European countries. The transition to market based agriculture, however, is far from completion in Southern and Eastern Europe and especially in the CIS countries. International Association of Agricultural...

Cooperativeness and its Role in the Polish Food Production System AgEcon
Przygodzka, Renata.
Joint management for the purpose of meeting common needs has been the concept of cooperativeness for over 100 years. In Poland, it developed in various sectors of the economy, with uneven intensity. It appeared in the food production sectors, in particular in the dairy industry, at quite an early stage. After World War II, due to inclusion of Poland into the block of socialist states, the concept of cooperativeness was strongly perverted, as it was identified with the process of collectivization of agriculture, and only political prerequisites laid the foundations for such a process. Only after year 1989 possibilities of giving the proper role to the concept of cooperativeness appeared. Currently, this role is reinforced along with the growing care for...

DIRECT PAYMENTS AND THEIR IMPACT ON THE LAND MARKET IN POLAND AgEcon
Dziemianowicz, Ryta Iwona; Przygodzka, Renata; Sadowski, Adam.
The article makes an attempt to answer the question: how direct payments affected the land market in Poland? The first part of the article explains the theoretical aspects of direct payments as an instrument of agricultural policy and their prospective effectiveness. Also the special character of the solutions adopted by Poland in relation with the use of this instrument was shown. The second part presents the main problems of the land market in Poland, taking into account both the supply and the demand factors of this market. The third part concentrates on searching for the cause-effect relations between the direct subsidies and the changes in the land market in Poland. They suggest, among others, that the forecasts regarding the retaining of land in...

TRADITION OR INNOVATION – WHICH APPROACH IS BETTER IN RURAL DEVELOPMENT? THE CASE OF PODLASIE REGION AgEcon
Przygodzka, Renata.
The article makes an attempt to answer the question, which of the development approaches of rural areas might be better: the one based on tradition, or perhaps the one, which is related with innovations. The conducted studies indicate that rural areas are strongly diversified. Various types of economic and social activity, which takes place in those areas, require a diversified approach. Thus, the answer for the question asked in the title cannot be a simple one. However, one can put forward a theory that the most proper development approach of rural areas is the concept of their sustainable development, in which tradition should be supplemented with innovation and vice versa. Only then will rural areas retain their heritage and at the same time will be a...

Transformation and its Impact on Structural Changes in Polish Agriculture AgEcon
Przygodzka, Renata; Dziemianowicz, Ryta Iwona.
The following article analyses the structural changes of the Polish agriculture, which have been influenced by the transformation processes. These processes have been caused and influenced by phenomenas of a various scope and impact, but from the point of view of functioning of agricultural farming a few major factors may be outlined. Amongst the mentioned factors one can find: price decontrol and liberalisation, which have influenced the processes of price and agricultural products realisation, international trade realisation, which have ‘forced’ the increase of business competitiveness in the rural areas, liquidation of state owned and monopolized farming institutions, the lack of which has given those areas the push towards individualized...
