Water-use efficiency (WUE) has been recognized as an important characteristic of vegetation productivity in various natural scientific disciplines for decades, but only recently at the ecosystem level, where different ways exist to characterize water-use efficiency. 5 Hence, the objective of this research was (a) to systematically compare different ways of calculating ecosystem water-use efficiency (WUEe) from eddy-covariance measurements, (b) quantify the diurnal, seasonal and interannual variability of WUEe in relation to meteorological conditions, and (c) analyse between-site variability of WUEe as affected by vegetation type and climatic conditions, across sites in European forest 10 ecosystems. Evaluation de CORNGRO : un modèle de simulation des transferts hydriques et de la croissance d’une culture de maïs Inra

CORNGRO utilise des entrées climatiques journalières : températures de l’air maximale et minimale, évapotranspiration potentielle, rayonnement global et précipitations. Il simule les flux hydriques dans le système sol-plante. Le sol est caractérisé par la conductivité hydraulique et le potentiel de pression en fonction de la teneur en eau. Le modèle de croissance répartit la production végétale en quatre compartiments : feuilles, tiges, racines et épis. Le taux de photosynthèse au point de saturation à la lumière et le coefficient qui lie l’accroissement de la matière sèche foliaire à celui de la surface des feuilles sont déterminés par calage. La répétition de cette procédure en année sèche et en année humide permet d’évaluer la capacité prédictive...

Identifying spatial patterns of Mediterranean landscapes from geostatistic analysis of remotely-sensed data IRD

The basic tool of geostatistics, the semi-variograms, has been used for quantifying spatial structures of soil and vegetation, as depicted by multi-resolution remotely-sensed images. Experimental semi-variograms of two contrasting Mediterranean landscapes were analysed by reference to simple theoretical models (spherical, exponential, allometric). A more general approach based on the superposition of spherical models of similar sills and varying ranges of influences is proposed for the interpretation of complex spatial patterns of natural vegetated landscapes. Studying the water transport in the soil-plant system requires information on the spatio-temporal variability of both subsystems and the ability to assess the impact of the soil heterogeneity and of the biological responses on the coupling between vegetation and its substrate. This study was conducted for 2 years in a vineyard in the Aude Valley, France, by measuring the particle size distribution of the topsoil, the instantaneous isotopic ratios (18O/16O, 2H/1H) of leaf water, annual shoot biomass production, and interannual persistence of this biomass along a 360 m transect. Background and Aims: Leaf responses to environmental conditions have been frequently described in fruit trees, but differences among cultivars have received little attention. This study shows that parameters of Farquhar’s photosynthesis and Jarvis’ stomatal conductance models differed between two apple cultivars, and examines the consequences of these differences for leaf water use efficiency.† Methods :Leaf stomatal conductance (gsw), net CO2 assimilation rate (An), respiration (Rd) and transpiration (E) were measured during summer in 8-year-old ‘Braeburn’ and ‘Fuji’ apple trees under well-watered field conditions.
