Assimilation of temperature profiles in a general circulation model of the Tropical Atlantic IRD
Morlière, Alain; Reverdin, G.; Merle, Jacques.
Thirty-six hundred temperature profiles collected during 1984 were assimilated into a multilayer primitive equation model of the Tropical ocean. The method consists in a monthly correction of the simulated temperature field. Each month, an observed field is computed from the temperature profiles with a successive correction analysis starting from the simulated field. The difference between the observed field and simulation is computed, the model is restarted from the previous month, progressively introducing the difference as a Newton forcing in the heat equation. The sensitivity to the initial state is greatly reduced near the equator after six months, but persists for a longer time at higher latitudes. The assimilated temperature structure is closer to...

Composition of freshwater in the spring of 2014 on the southern Labrador shelf and slope ArchiMer
Benetti, M.; Reverdin, G.; Lique, Camille; Yashayaev, I.; Holliday, N. P.; Tynan, E.; Torres-valdes, S.; Lherminier, Pascale; Treguer, P.; Sarthou, G..
The Labrador Current is an important conduit of freshwater from the Arctic to the interior North Atlantic subpolar gyre. Here, we investigate the spatial variability of the freshwater sources over the southern Labrador shelf and slope during May-June 2014. Using measurements of seawater properties such as temperature, salinity, nutrients and oxygen isotopic composition, we estimate the respective contributions of saline water of Atlantic and Pacific origins, of brines released during sea ice formation, and of freshwater from sea ice melt and meteoric water origins. On the southern Labrador shelf, we find a large brine signal and Pacific Water influence indicating a large contribution of water from the Canadian Arctic. The brine signal implies that more...

Correction of salinity measured during the Focal experiment IRD
Gouriou, Yves; Reverdin, G.; Penhoat, Yves du.
From july 1982 to august 1984 nine cruises were performed in the intertropical Atlantic ocean as a component of the FOCAL program (Programme Français Océan et Climat Atlantique Equatorial). Profiles of temperature and salinity and oxygen were done with a CTDO probe at the longitude 35°W, 23°W and 4°W, by the R.V. Capricorne and hydrocast measurements were collected at 1°E and 6°E by the R.V. A. Nizery. Systematic differences in salinity measurements taken bythe R.V. Capricorne are apparent when comparing them with other cruises which took place in 1983 or 1984 : salinities are underestimated by the FOCAL cruises at 35°W, 23°W and 4°W. (D'après résumé d'auteur)

Interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere occur at the air-sea interface through the transfer of momentum, heat, gases and particulate matter, and through the impact of the upper-ocean biology on the composition and radiative properties of this boundary layer. The Tara Pacific expedition, launched in May 2016 aboard the schooner Tara, was a 29-month exploration with the dual goals to study the ecology of reef ecosystems along ecological gradients in the Pacific Ocean and to assess inter-island and open ocean surface plankton and neuston community structures. In addition, key atmospheric properties were measured to study links between the two boundary layer properties. A major challenge for the open ocean sampling was the lack of ship-time available...

Modeled surface dynamic height in 1964-1984 : an effort to assess how well the low frequencies in the Equatorial Atlantic were sampled in 1982-1984 IRD
Reverdin, G.; Penhoat, Yves du.
A wind-forced linear model has been used to produce 21 years (1964--1984) of monthly time series of surface dynamic height in the Equatorial Atlantic. Theclimatological seasonal cycle is substracted, and the statistical characteristics of the residuals are analyzed. An empirical orthogonal function analysis reveals that the most significant pattern has deviations of one sign in the Western Equatorial Atlantic. The anomalies in the last 2 years, 1983 and 1984, are particularly large. The time component of the first empirical orthogonal function peaks in july 1983, changes sign at the end of 1983, and has an extremun of the opposite sign in April 1984. At that time, the zonal slope of dynamic height had reversed with respect to normal along the equator....

MoMAR-D: a technological challenge to monitor the dynamics of the Lucky Strike vent ecosystem ArchiMer
Colaco, Ana; Blandin, Jerome; Cannat, M.; Carval, Thierry; Chavagnac, V.; Connelly, D.; Fabian, M.; Ghiron, S.; Goslin, Jean; Miranda, J. M.; Reverdin, G.; Sarrazin, Jozee; Waldmann, C.; Sarradin, Pierre-marie.
The MoMAR (monitoring the Mid-Atlantic Ridge) project was initiated in 1998 by the InterRidge programme to promote and coordinate long-term multidisciplinary monitoring of hydrothermal vents at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). The major objective of the project is to study vent ecosystem dynamics using a multidisciplinary approach from geophysics to microbiology over a period of a few decades. MoMAR-D is a demonstration project of MoMAR, partially funded by the European network of excellence ESONET (http://www.esonet-noe.org/). MoMAR-D aims to deploy and manage a multidisciplinary observing system at the Lucky Strike vent field for 1 year. This large hydrothermal field is located at the centre of one of the most volcanically active segments of the MAR. The...

Nd isotopic composition of water masses and dilution of the Mediterranean outflow along the southwest European margin ArchiMer
Copard, K.; Colin, C.; Frank, N.; Jeandel, C.; Montero-serrano, J-c; Reverdin, G.; Ferron, Bruno.
Nd isotopic compositions (epsilon Nd) of seawater profiles and deep-sea corals collected off the coast of Iberia and from the Bay of Biscay were measured (1) to constrain the Nd isotopic composition of water masses along the southwest European margin, (2) to track the Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW) during its northward propagation, and (3) to establish hydrological changes during the last 1500 years. The Eastern North Atlantic Central Water (ENACW) is characterized by Nd isotopic composition of around -12.0. Mediterranean Sea Water (MSW) is collected from 800 and 1200 m depth and is characterized by epsilon Nd values ranging from -10.9, off the coast of Iberia, to -11.6 in the Bay of Biscay. These epsilon Nd results suggest a strong dilution of the pure...

New SMOS Sea Surface Salinity with reduced systematic errors and improved variability ArchiMer
Boutin, J.; Vergely, J. L.; Marchand, S.; D'Amico, F; Hasson, A.; Kolodziejczyk, Nicolas; Reul, Nicolas; Reverdin, G.; Vialard, J..
Salinity observing satellites have the potential to monitor river fresh-water plumes mesoscale spatio-temporal variations better than any other observing system. In the case of the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite mission, this capacity was hampered due to the contamination of SMOS data processing by strong land-sea emissivity contrasts. Kolodziejczyk et al. (2016) (hereafter K2016) developed a methodology to mitigate SMOS systematic errors in the vicinity of continents, that greatly improved the quality of the SMOS Sea Surface Salinity (SSS). Here, we find that SSS variability, however, often remained underestimated, such as near major river mouths. We revise the K2016 methodology with: a) a less stringent filtering of measurements in...

Objective analysis of simulated Equatorial Atlantic ocean data on seasonal time scales IRD
McPhaden, M.J.; Reverdin, G.; Merle, Jacques; Penhoat, Yves du; Kartavseff, A..
In this study we objectively analyze simulated Equatorial Atlantic ocean data on seasonal time scales using a technique based on optimal interpolation. The purpose is twofold : (1) to estimate the accuracy of the FOCAL/SEQUAL (Programme Français Océan-Climat en Atlantique Equatorial/Seasonal Equatorial Atlantic Response Program) array for mapping large-scale seasonal variations in the depth of the 20° isotherm, and (2) to examine the potential of 20 FOCAL drifting buoys drogued with thermistor chains for enhancing that mapping accuracy. This latter point leads to the development of heuristic model for drifter motion in order to identify the most favorable time and location for buoy deployments. Results are discussed for a number of assumptions about...

Satellite and In Situ Salinity: Understanding Near-surface Stratification and Sub-footprint Variability ArchiMer
Boutin, J.; Chao, Y.; Asher, W. L.; Maes, C.; Meissner, T.; Tang, W.; Vinogradova, N.; Ward, B..
Remote sensing of salinity using satellite-mounted microwave radiometers provides new perspectives for studying ocean dynamics and the global hydrological cycle. Calibration and validation of these measurements is challenging because satellite and in situ methods measure salinity differently. Microwave radiometers measure the salinity in the top few centimeters of the ocean, whereas most in situ observations are reported below a depth of a few meters. Additionally, satellites measure salinity as a spatial average over an area of about 100x100 km2. In contrast, in situ sensors provide pointwise measurements at the location of the sensor. Thus, the presence of vertical gradients in, and horizontal variability of, sea surface salinity complicates comparing...

Surface salinity of the North Atlantic : can we reconstruct its fluctuations over the last one hundred years ? IRD
Reverdin, G.; Cayan, D.; Dooley, H.D.; Ellett, D.J.; Levitus, S.; Penhoat, Yves du; Dessier, Alain.
Surface samples have been collected in the North Atlantic in the past one hundred years for determining the ocean salinity and its temperature. A large share of the data we have used were collected by merchant vessels of weather ships of European countries and to a large extent are listed in reports, in particular in the "Bulletin Hydrographique". We investigate whether these data are relevant for determining low frequency fluctuations of the sea surface salinity. We find many crossing in the 1920s for which salinity is anomalously high compared with the climatology or with other crossings collected on the same ship line. These anomalies are indicative of a contamination of the sample. By examining hydrographic data, reports and recent experience in...
