A Holistic Sustainability Assessment Method for Urban Food System Governance Organic Eprints
Landert, Jan; Schader, Christian; Moschitz, Heidrun; Stolze, Matthias.
A growing number of people live in cities. Urban food systems and their impacts on ecosystems and socio-economic conditions are becoming increasingly important. To address the challenge of making urban food systems more sustainable, a rising number of assessments of urban food systems have been published. Some used large quantitative datasets while others were descriptive in nature and/or do not address the whole thematic spectrum of sustainability. In this study, an indicator set was developed, which uses widely available data to address all dimensions of sustainability. The indicators focus on policies and measures of public administration and local politics and are based on the guidelines for Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture Systems...

Accounting for uncertainty in multi-criteria sustainability assessments at the farm level: Improving the robustness of the SMART-Farm Tool Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian; Curran, Michael; Heidenreich, Anja; Landert, Jan; Blockeel, Johan; Baumgart, Lukas; Ssebunya, Brian; Moakes, Simon; Marton, Silvia; Lazzarini, Gianna; Niggli, Urs; Stolze, Matthias.
Many farm sustainability assessments use multi-criteria methods for aggregating indicators based on performance scores and importance weights. One of these is the SMART-Farm Tool, which measures the degree of goal achievement of farms across 327 indicators nested within 4 sustainability dimensions, 21 themes and 58 sub-themes of the FAO-SAFA Guidelines (Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture). This study aims to improve the empirical foundation of the SMART-Farm Tool by (i) evaluating the uncertainty of indicator weights obtained via expert opinion and (ii) integrating this uncertainty into SMART assessment results. An adapted Delphi process was implemented, involving a group of 67 experts from 21 countries divided into thematic and regional...

Agriculture bio respectueuse du climat: le jeu en vaut-il la chandelle? Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian; Meier, Matthias.

Schader, Christian; Stolze, Matthias.
This paper aims to present the results of an expert and stakeholder based Delphi approach for analysing the performance of Swiss organic agriculture in terms of sustainability. We analysed four different production systems: Bio Suisse standards, public organic standards, integrated farming and farming according to Swiss cross compliance standards. The study illustrated that none of the farming systems performs 100% sustainable against any of the indicators. However, organic production showed an about 1-20% better performance than conventional and integrated systems. Particularly high scores were achieved for product quality, animal welfare, and biodiversity, while performing below average regarding resource use, food security and climate change. We...

Drapela, Thomas; Petrasek, Richard; Meier, Matthias Samuel; Pfiffner, Lukas; Lindenthal, Thomas; Schader, Christian.
This paper presents results of an on-farm biodiversity assessment of 45 organic arable farms in eastern Austria (region Weinviertel). The core of the assessment method consists of 99 parameters concerning agricultural practices and semi-natural habitats and their impacts on genetic diversity, habitat diversity and species diversity of eleven indicator species groups. For each farm, a biodiversity performance score was calculated ranging from 0 to 100 %, where 100 % would be reached with the highest possible scores for all parameters. The biodiversity assessment of the 45 organic arable farms revealed big between-farm differences in the biodiversity performance (16.8 to 50.6 %; Ø 32.8 ± 6.1 %). While 32 farms for example achieved biodiversity scores > 40...

Biolandwirtschaft senkt die externen Kosten Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian; Krebs, Adrian.

CH-FARMIS 2.0: A Sector-Model to Assess the Economic and Environmental Impacts of Swiss Direct Payment Schemes Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian; Sanders, Jürn; Lampkin, Nic; Stolze, Matthias.
Quantitative sector models are an essential tool to forecast the sector-wide economic effects of agricultural policies. However, to cover ecological effects with economic sector models is still a methodological challenge. This poster describes a promising approach, which is currently implemented at the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) to meet this challenge. CH-FARMIS is a sector consistent farm group model, which is able to forecast economic impacts of policies on farm, regional and sector-level. In a flexible way, CH-FARMIS is able to split up the farm sector in farm groups according to various characteristics (region, farming system, farm type, etc.). CH-FARMIS is based on positive mathematical programming (PMP) to allow for a realistic...

Cost-effectiveness of organic farming for achieving environmental policy targets in Switzerland Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian.
The aim of this PhD thesis was to calculate the cost-effectiveness of organic farming in achieving environmental policy targets compared to single-agri-environmental policies. Using a theoretical model, it was demonstrated that financial support for organic farming does not in principle contradict the Tinbergen Rule, even if there are other targeted policy measures which are more cost-effective in achieving specific environmental goals. Hence, organic farming should be included as an option within a mix of other policies as long as its costeffectiveness with respect to the overall set of policy goals is superior to that of a combination of other policy instruments. The cost-effectiveness of agri-environmental policies can be understood as a function of...

Cotton-basil intercropping: effects on pests, yields and economical parameters in an organic field in Fayoum, Egypt Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian; Zaller, Johann G; Köpke, Ulrich.
In many countries, cotton is traditionally intercropped with other plants in order to increase yields and to control pests. We tested the effects of intercropping cotton (Gossypium barbadense L.) and basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) during one field season on pest infestation, yields, and economical parameters in the Governorate of Fayoum, Egypt. Basil, which is known for its repellent effect on various insect pests, was mixed with cotton in three different intercropping rates (no, medium and high basil area fraction) and two row distances (60 and 90 cm) using a substitutive design with four replicates. Compared with the non-intercropped plots, cotton-basil intercropping significantly reduced total pest infestation and led to a 50% reduced abundance of the pink...

Defining a land boundary for sustainable livestock consumption Organic Eprints
Van Zanten, Hannah H.E.; Herrero, Mario; Van Hal, Ollie; Röös, Elin; Müller, Adrian; Garnett, Tara; Gerber, Pierre J.; Schader, Christian; de Boer, Imke J.M..
The need for more sustainable production and consumption of animal source food (ASF) is central to the achievement of the sustainable development goals: within this context, wise use of land is a core challenge and concern. A key question in feeding the future world is: how much ASF should we eat? We demonstrate that livestock raised under the circular economy concept could provide a significant, nonnegligible part (9–23 g/per capita) of our daily protein needs (~50–60 g/per capita). This livestock then would not consume human‐edible biomass, such as grains, but mainly convert leftovers from arable land and grass resources into valuable food, implying that production of livestock feed is largely decoupled from arable land. The availability of these biomass...

Ecological-economic impact assessment of Swiss Direct Payments on sector level: A quantitative approach for the evaluation of the cost-effectiveness of policy measures Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian.
The request for quantitative tools for ecological-economic impact assessment of agricultural policies has increased in recent years, due to i) improved impact assessment and policy evaluation standards of the new agricultural support schemes (European Commission, 2004) and ii) the improved methodological and technical potentials in the field of sector modelling (Heckelei, 2002). Switzerland, as a non-EU member, has introduced cross-compliance rules already in 1998 and linked a bulk of further ecological direct payments to specific farm management restrictions. While the whole direct payment system has been subject to an official evaluation process (Flury, 2005), especially the question for the cost-effectiveness of extensification policies has not been...

Enhancing supply chain stability, resilience and sustainability through improved sub-supplier management – chocolate and cotton apparel case studies Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian; Jancso, Leonhardt; Hofstetter, Joerg; Niggli, Urs.
The majority of Swiss agri-food companies source from global supply chains. Yet, only occasionally supply chain initatives achieve the desired improvements in sustainability performance. In close collaboration with six companies of two important sectors of the Swiss economy – chocolate and textile – this project will identify and analyse various supply chain management options in order to support science-based decision making with respect to global supplier management.

Environmental impact assessment of dietary scenarios: a comparison of methodological aspects Organic Eprints
Frehner, Anita; Müller, Adrian; Schader, Christian; de Boer, Imke J.M.; von Zanten, Hannah H.E..
Background Dietary patterns have manifold impacts on the environment. • However, studies that assess dietary patterns operate with varying methodological approaches and underlying assumptions, which evoke different, and occasionally even contradicting, results. • This leads to uncertainty regarding what should or should not be eaten, especially with regard to animal-source food (ASF) and production types (e.g. conventional or organic). • Therefore, to adequately interpret results, it is necessary to interpret these in the context of the respective methods used and assumptions made.

Environmental impact assessment of dietary scenarios: a review on methods Organic Eprints
Frehner, Anita; Müller, Adrian; Schader, Christian; de Boer, Imke J.M.; Van Zanten, Hannah H.E..
Dietary patterns have manifold impacts on human health and the environment. Impact assessments are employed to compare impacts of single food items or of diets as a whole, either in their current state or for theoretical scenarios. However, conclusions from impact assessments focusing on theoretical scenarios are diverse, and occasionally even contradicting. The role of animals and types of production are key aspects of these discussions. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyse the methodological choices that cause these differing conclusions. We find that consideration of food-system-wide consequences of dietary change in the impact assessment, differentiation between land use categories, and production units are central for determining which...

Environmental impacts of organic and conventional agricultural products - Are the differences captured by life cycle assessment? Organic Eprints
Meier, Matthias S.; Stoessel, Franziska; Jungbluth, Niels; Juraske, Ronnie; Schader, Christian; Stolze, Matthias.
Comprehensive assessment tools are needed that reliably describe environmental impacts of different agricultural systems in order to develop sustainable high yielding agricultural production systems with minimal impacts on the environment. Today, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is increasingly used to assess and compare the environmental sustainability of agricultural products from conventional and organic agriculture. However, LCA studies comparing agricultural products from conventional and organic farming systems report a wide variation in the resource efficiency of products from these systems. The studies show that impacts per area farmed land are usually less in organic systems, but related to the quantity produced impacts are often higher. We reviewed 34...
