Aichi Virus, Norovirus, Astrovirus, Enterovirus, and Rotavirus Involved in Clinical Cases from a French Oyster-Related Gastroenteritis Outbreak ArchiMer

Following a flooding event close to a shellfish production lagoon, 205 cases of gastroenteritis were linked to oyster consumption. Twelve stool samples from different individuals were collected. Analysis showed that eight samples were positive for multiple enteric viruses, and one stool sample had seven different enteric viruses. Analysis of shellfish implicated in the outbreak allowed detection of the same diversity of enteric viruses, with some viral genomic sequences being identical to those obtained from stool sample analysis. Trois points de suivi de tellines ont été échantillonnés de manière irrégulière entre juillet 2006 et décembre 2008, dans le cadre de l’étude de la zone n°11.21 « Bande littorale de Port la Nouvelle à la Franqui », avec le concours du Comité Local des Pêches de Port Vendres et la Prud’homie de Bages-Port la Nouvelle pour la réalisation des prélèvements. Le traitement des données acquises, permet d’estimer en B la qualité microbiologique de la zone n°11.21 pour le groupe 2 selon le règlement (CE) n°854/2004. Après un rappel des objectifs, du fonctionnement et de la méthode d’interprétation des résultats du réseau de contrôle microbiologique (REMI) et du réseau de surveillance chimique (ROCCH), ce rapport comprend un bilan national et décrit le programme annuel 2018 de la région Occitanie. Il présente l’ensemble des résultats obtenus, en particulier l’estimation de la qualité microbiologique et chimique des zones de production de coquillages classées. En 2018, 28 zones de production ont été suivies par le REMI en Occitanie dont 12 dans l’Aude, 14 dans l’Hérault, 1 dans le Gard et 1 interdépartementale Hérault-Gard. With 750 producers, 2750 tables for breeding, 13 000 tons of oysters and 2 500 tons of mussels marketed every year, the shellfish production of the Thau lagoon represents at least 10 % of the national French production and a direct turnover of 33 millions € (Rey Valette, 2004). The Thau lagoon is a semi-enclosed coastal system sensitive to faecal inputs from the watershed (280 km2). In June 2004, the Autorithies classified the Thau lagoon as a « class B » area, from which live bivalve molluscs can be marketed for human consumption only after depuration. Until then, shellfish used to be collected for direct human consumption. The yearly shellfish harvest on Thau lagoon (75 km2) is about 13 000 tons of oysters and 4 000 tons of mussels, and represents 10% of French shellfish harvest. In the microbiological monitoring network of French shellfish harvest areas, managed by Ifremer, a total of 2 374 shellfish samples were collected on Thau lagoon and analysed (Escherichia coli) on 9 sampling stations between 1997 and 2006. Despite a population increasing rate of 15.6% between 1999 and 2006 on the Thau lagoon watershed, the shellfish faecal contamination level is stable between 1997 and 2006, and corresponds to B sanitary standard, authorizing marketing for human consumption after purification.
