Effective recycling agriculture around the Baltic Sea: background report Organic Eprints

In this report the historical background and present situation of the plant nutrient balances and surplus of plant nutrients within the agricultural sector in the eight countries of the Baltic Sea catchments area (Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Denmark, Germany and Russia) are presented and analysed. The Baltic Ecological Recycling Agriculture and Society (BERAS) project is evaluating the consequences of converting the whole agricultural sector according to recycling principles. Evaluation of nitrogen utilization by means of the concept of primary production balance Organic Eprints

Primary production balance (PPB) indicates the ratio (*) between harvested nutrients and nutrients put into crop production from outside the system (=primary nutrients). The PPB is independent of the final output (crop vs. animal products) and can be used to evaluate different systems (farms). The utilization of nitrogen (N) was evaluated by means of the PPB on nine organic farms, stockless and mixed ones, in eastern Finland. The mixed farms were able to reach a remarkably higher primary production balance (1.0 – 1.2) compared with the stockless ones (0.5). Values higher than 1.0 indicate recirculation of nutrients. Other components of the high PPB were legumes as nitrogen source and optimum livestock density.

Evaluation of nutrient (nitrogen) efficiency - the concept of primary nutrients Organic Eprints
Seuri, Pentti.
Initial method by Seuri (2002, 2013) to evaluate nutrient utilization was improved. The system boundary was set to the new place covering the total target system including also the “invisible” processes outside the target system. The substitutive method is presented in the case of missing data of processes outside the target system. This study underlines the importance of understanding the total system instead of trying to improve single sub system.

Global set har menneskene på jorden udnyttet alle de vedvarende ressourcer, når vi når til septembermåned, og vi kan kun overleve resten af året ved at bruge af de lagrede ikke-fornybare ressourcer. Vi har faktisk brug for halvanden jordklode for fortsat at kunne producere alle de varer vi forbruger, men vi har kun én!

Localisation and recycling in rural food systems - impact and solutions Organic Eprints

The aim of the study was to assess the impact of an increased share of local organic food based on local resources, especially on increased recycling (i.e. the impact of increased locality or localization), on sustainability of rural food systems around the Baltic Sea. Obstacles and solutions for sustainable localization and recycling were also identified. In addition to these main objectives, a methodological interest in developing interdisciplinary research processes was also incorporated. Nitrogen and phosphorus leakage in ecological recycling agriculture Organic Eprints

Nitrogen Utilization in Integrated Crop and Animal Production Organic Eprints

The principles of organic production are based on integration between crop and animal production and self-regulated nutrient intensity. A comparison between specialized dairy and crop farm models and an integrated dairy and crop farm model showed 24 % higher total production per area and higher nitrogen utilization in the integrated system. The main factors were more efficient nutrient circulation, better utilization of legume crops and low intensity of nitrogen on non-legume crops.

Nutrient utilization with and without recycling within farming systems Organic Eprints

The main purpose of agriculture is food production. There are always limited resources available for food production, thus the resource efficiency is always the key issue. The modern agriculture is using resources like external nutrients (fertilizers) and non renewable energy in large scale. Optimizing nitrogen utilization by integrating crop and animal production Organic Eprints

The farm model was built according to the data from 9 Finnish organic farms. 20% of area produced cash crop and 80% was used as fodder in milk production on the farm. The model indicates that there is high potential (up to 30% compared to Finnish average) to reduce nitrogen losses in agriculture. The key factors are integration between crop and animal production, limited nutrient intensity according to the system itself and BNF. The crop rotation used in model can support milk production with relative high intensity. In this model no external fodder is used, however, it may be necessary to have a small amount of high quality processed protein concentrate, if the annual milk yield exceeds 8000 kg/cow. In stockless organic farming even 2-4 fold field area is needed to produce equal amount of product compared to conventional farming without fallowing. Integration between livestock farms and stockless farms is in a key role to improve farming.

Results of plant nutrient balances in the BERAS countries : Finland Organic Eprints

The potential of ecological recycling agriculture (ERA) for improved nature resource conservation and reduced environmental impacts in the Baltic Sea drainage area Organic Eprints

By integrating crop and animal production on a farm or farms in closed cooperation combined with soil formation legume crops in balanced crop-rotations it will be possible to maximize the efficient use of nutrients in manure, minimize inputs of limited nutrient resources, minimize nutrient surpluses and reduce the input of nutrients to the Baltic Sea by more than 50 %. This will be the basis for recommendation to convert the agriculture in the Baltic drainage area.

Water discharge and nutrient leaching from organic mixed crop rotation Organic Eprints

Water discharge and nutrient leaching studies were conducted in an experimental field under organic farming practice for 20 years. The water discharge measurements cover five years out of a six-year crop rotation. The water discharge for the whole year was 1520 m³/ha (=152 mm). More than 2/3 of the total discharge occurred in April-May. The total precipitation for the whole year was 680 mm. The total amount of N in the drainage runoff was 11.5 kg/ha and the flow-weighted average content 7.5 mg/l. The total amount of P in the drainage runoff was 48 g/ha and the flow-weighted average content 0.031 mg/l. 85 % of the total P was dissolved reactive phosphorus (DPR).
