Abschätzung der Auswirkungen der Krautfäule auf den Bio-Kartoffelbau in verschiedenen Europäischen Ländern, sowie Inventar der angewendeten Anbau- und Pflanzenschutzstrategien Organic Eprints
Tamm, L.; Smit, B.; Hospers, M.; Jannsens, B.; Burma, J.; Mølgaard, J.P.; Lærke, P.E.; Hansen, H.H.; Bertrand, C.; Lambion, J.; Finckh, M.; Schüler, C.; Lammerts van Bueren, E.; Ruissen, T.; Solberg, S.; Speiser, B.; S., Philip; M., Wolfe; Leifert, C.

Assessment of the Socio-Economic Impact of Late Blight and State of the Art of Management in European Organic Potato Production Systems Organic Eprints
Tamm, L.; Smit, A.B.; Hospers, M.; Janssens, S.R.M.; Buurma, J.S.; Molgaard, J.-P.; Laerke, P.E.; Hansen, H.H.; Hermans, A.; Boedker, L.; Bertrand, C.; Lambion, J.; Finckh, M.R.; Schüler, Chr.; Lammerts van Bueren, E.; Ruissen, T.; Nielsen, B.J.; Solberg, S.; Speiser, B.; Wolfe, M.S.; Phillips, S.; Wilcoxon, S.J.; Leifert, C..
In Europe, late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans, is the most devastating disease affecting organic (and conventional) potato production. Under suitable environmental conditions the disease can spread rapidly and it can cause complete crop loss. The extent of damage due to late blight depends on several factors: in organic production systems these factors include climate, choice of variety, soil management and use of crop protection agents such as copper. Therefore, the extent of economic damage varies between European regions. Council Regulation (EEC) No 2092/91, amended by Commission Regulation (EC) No 473/2002 of 15 March 2002 regulates the use of copper in organic agriculture. Copper has been the single most important control agent in...

El fosfonato potasico en la agricultura ecologica Organic Eprints
Garcia-Ruiz, R.; Speiser, B.; Adler, C.; Klederer, M.; Micheloni, C..

This volume contains proposals for criteria for evaluation of plant protection products, fertilisers and soil conditioners1 to be used in organic agriculture. These ideas were developed in the course of the European Union (EU) Concerted Action project ‘ORGANIC INPUTS EVALUATION’ (QLK5-CT-2002-02565). For more information on this project see the end of this volume or visit the project website www.organicinputs.org. The documents in this volume are proposals elaborated by the project consortium and external experts. They were discussed with a broader audience at a public conference held in Brussels on October 13, 2005, and have been amended accordingly. Our proposals also include a “criteria matrix”, which is in Microsoft Excel format, and therefore stands...

Evaluation and registration of plant protection inputs for organic farming Organic Eprints
Speiser, B.; Tamm, L.; Schmid, O..
Organic farmers may only use those plant protection products which are listed in Annex II B of the ‘Organic Regulation’ 2092/91 and also registered for use at national level. At present, new compounds may only be listed in Reg. 2092/91, if they do not come into direct contact with the crop (although in perennial crops, contact outside the growing season of the edible parts is possible), which is a major obstacle for progress. The EU-funded ORGANIC INPUTS EVALUATION project aims at making Reg. 2092/91 more flexible with regard to new products, while safeguarding the principles of organic farming. Registra-tion under the ‘Pesticide Directive’ 91/414 represents a considerable financial hurdle. The REBECA project will propose registration requirements which...

Facilitating the registration of biocontrol organisms, plant extracts and semiochemicals in Europe Organic Eprints
Speiser, B.; Tamm, L.; Bale, J.; Fjelsted, A.; Hokkanen, H.; Menzler-Hokkanen, I.; Kuhlmann, U.; Strasser, H.; Hauschild, R.; Strauch, O.; Ehlers, R.U..
The legal regulation of plant protection products (Dir. 91/414/ EEC) is a bottleneck in the market introduction of new microbial biocontrol agents, plant extracts and pheromones. In contrast, invertebrate biocontrol agents (“beneficials”) are not registered at EU level. The EU-funded project REBECA suggested improvements to accelerate the regulation process and make it more cost-effective, without compromises to the level of safety. Representatives of all stakeholder groups participated in the REBECA workshops. The EU Commission and Member States are encouraged to improve the registration of biocontrol organisms, plant extracts and semiochemicals at EU and/or national level. The full proposals can be found at www.rebeca-net.de.

Genetic structure and pathogenicity of populations of Phytophthora infestans from organic potato crops in France, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom Organic Eprints
Flier, W. G.; Kroon, L. P. N. M.; Hermansen, A.; van Raaij, H. M. G.; Speiser, B.; Tamm, L.; Fuchs, J. G.; Lambion, J.; Razzaghian, J.; Andrivon, D.; Wilcockson, S.; Leifert, C..
Genetic variation and pathogenicity of Phytophthora infestans isolates collected from organic potato crops of the susceptible cv. Bintje and the moderately resistant cv. Santé were assessed in France, Norway, and the United Kingdom in 2001 and in Switzerland in 2001 and 2002. Population structures differed considerably between the four P. infestans populations. Those from France, Switzerland and the UK were mainly clonal populations showing restricted levels of genetic diversity, whilst those from Norway were mixed A1 and A2 mating type populations with high levels of genetic diversity, suggesting periodical sexual reproduction. Isolates collected from cv. Bintje were on average more aggressive than or comparable to isolates from cv. Santé. Race complexity...

Improvement of late blight management in organic potato production systems in Europe: field tests with more resistant potato varieties and copper based fungicides Organic Eprints
Speiser, B.; Tamm, L.; Amsler, T.; Lambion, J.; Bertrand, C.; Hermansen, A.; Ruissen, M. A.; Haaland, P.; Zarb, J.; Santos, J.; Shotton, P.; Wilcockson, S.; Juntharathep, P.; Ghorbani, R.; Leifert, C..
Late blight of potatoes, caused by Phytophthora infestans, is particularly difficult to prevent or control in organic agriculture. In this study, the host resistance of selected varieties to foliar and tuber blight and their yield under organic growing conditions were assessed in trials carried out in four countries (Switzerland, France, England and Norway) in 2001 and 2002. The objective was to identify new, more resistant varieties which might replace some of the more susceptible varieties which are currently grown in organic agriculture. In each country, five test varieties were compared with two reference varieties, identical for all sites, and with two locally popular varieties. In addition, the effect of copper fungicides was assessed for all...

Translocation of phosphonate from frigoplants to fruits in strawberries Organic Eprints
Speiser, B.; Schärer, H.-J..
We analysed the phosphonate contents in commercially available strawberry frigoplants and in the fruits grown on these plants. The results show that phosphonates can be translocated from frigoplants to fruits. Thus, strawberry growers may be confronted with phosphonate residues even if they have not applied phosphonates themselves.
