A simple biodiversity assessment scheme supporting nature-friendly farm management Organic Eprints

Farmers are important actors for regional development and biodiversity protection. Agri-environment-climate measures (AECM) are therefore a central tool of the European Union to support its biodiversity conservation policy. AECM generally reward farmers for fulfilling predefined management actions or avoiding specific practices. In contrast, result oriented AECM are intended to reward farmers for the outcome of nature friendly management practices. This approach gives more flexibility in management and hence promotes farmers engagement and autonomy. Besides educational activities and agricultural advisory services farmers need user friendly tools to assess biodiversity in order to meet result oriented AECM. An innovative approach to enhance biodiversity on farmland: the credit point system Organic Eprints

Background and objectives - Agri-environment schemes (AES) aim to reverse the decrease in farmland biodiversity. - The implemented AES did not result in a general increase in farmland biodiversity. - There is a need of innovative tools to motivate farmers to enhance biodiversity on their farms. - Objectives: (1) Develop a simple tool with which farmers can assess individual efforts for biodiversity on their farms. (2) Evaluate the effect of advisory support to optimize ecological and economical aspects for individual farms.

Application of phenology models for Climate Services Organic Eprints

Global warming is expected to accelerate the development of plants and insects leading to earlier occurrence of phenological stages than under today’s climate. This can alter the exposure of plants to extreme climate events and further change the synchrony between host plants and pest insects. Assessing the implications of earlier development for the exposure to risks is necessary to inform adaptation. Assessing climate change impacts on fruit plant and pest phenology and their synchrony: the case of apple and codling moth Organic Eprints

Temperature is a main climatic driver of plant phenology and the dominant abiotic factor directly affecting insect pests. Global warming is therefore expected to accelerate the development of plants and insects alike. In the case of multivoltine pest species, it was shown that higher temperatures lead to the appearance of additional generations toward the end of the warm season (Stöckli et al., 2012), which also has implications for pest management. The same effect was shown for the timing of flowering termination of apple trees (Stöckli and Samietz, 2015), the time when a pest can attack a fruit. Comparing two models of the diurnal temperature cycle for simulations of crop and pest phenology under climate change Organic Eprints

Air temperature is the most important determinant of crop and pest phenology. Developmental rates of organisms are thus usually modelled as a function of growing degree-days. These can be evaluated based on either daily or hourly temperatures. However, as climate model do not provide reliable information at high temporal resolution, statistical or empirical models are needed to generate hourly temperature data for assessing crop and pest phenology under climate change. We present the comparison of two approaches for generating hourly temperatures from daily values of the minimum (Tmin) and maximum (Tmax) temperature. Das Projekt "Mit Vielfalt punkten" Organic Eprints

Es gibt verschiedene private landwirtschaftliche Initiativen, die zum Ziel haben, die Biodiversität am Markt in Wert zu setzen. Typischerweise bauen sie dabei auf staatlichen Programmen auf und ergänzen deren Instrumente oder Anforderungen. Hier werden einige Resultate des Projekts «Mit Vielfalt punkten – Bauern beleben die Natur» präsentiert, das seit 2008 von der Schweizerischen Vogelwarte Sempach und dem Forschungsinstitut für biologischen Landbau (FiBL) sowie den Landwirtschaftsorganisationen Bio Suisse und IP-Suisse durchgeführt wird.

Strategies to stop the loss of biodiversity in agriculture areas will be more successful if farmers have the means to understand changes in biodiversity on their farms and to assess the effectiveness of biodiversity promoting measures. There are several methods to assess on-farm biodiversity but it may be difficult to select the most appropriate method for a farmer’s individual circumstances. Interreg-V Oberrhein: Nachhaltiger Pflanzenschutz gegen invasive Schaderreger im Obst- und Weinbau (InvaProtect) Organic Eprints

30 Partner aus Deutschland, Frankreich und der Schweiz gehen im Rahmen von InvaProtect gemeinsam der Frage nach, wie heimische Arten durch geeignete, nachhaltige, integrierte Pflanzenschutzmaßnahmen vor invasiven Schaderregern geschützt werden können. Hierzu müssen die notwendigen Grundlagen für die gesamte Oberrheinregion in den 3 angrenzenden Ländern erarbeitet und umgesetzt werden. Das Projekt, das 2016 begonnen wurde, hat eine Laufzeit von 3 Jahren. InvaProtect verfolgt das übergeordnete Ziel des nachhaltigen Pflanzenschutzes vor invasiven Schaderregern im Obst- und Weinbau am Oberrhein. Schwerpunkt ist die Kirschessigfliege. During intensificaton of agriculture plant diversity decreased parallel with the decline of wildbee species richness. But wildbees are important pollinators for different crops and wild plants. Farming intensity and landscape infrastructure are key-drivers altering species composition and population densities of wildbees. We found, that extensive meadows and pastures, herbaceous strips beside hedgerows, flowering stripes and organic cereal fields can be valuable habitats for wildbees, also for endangered and oligolectic ones. The habitat-types included various plant species and landscape elements that are meaningful for many wildbee species.
