A Credit Point System for assessing and enhancing biodiversity at the farm scale – and beyond Organic Eprints

Conclusions The Credit Point System is a suitable tool to assess biodiversity at the farm scale. The resulting CPS score reflects biodiversity efforts made by farmers on their land. The CPS as an assessment tool and the uptake of biodiversity directives in a label programme for sustainable and wildlife friendly foods have opened up new perspectives towards promoting farmland biodiversity at a large scale.

Im Projekt „Mit Vielfalt punkten – Bauern beleben die Natur“ erforschten und erprobten das FiBL und die Vogelwarte Sempach seit 2009 Massnahmen und Instrumente, um die Biodiversität auf Landwirtschaftsbetrieben wirksam zu fördern. Es hat sich gezeigt, dass die Produktion von Nahrungsmitteln sehr wohl mit der Erhaltung und Förderung der Biodiversität vereinbar ist, ja sogar ökonomische Vorteile bringen kann. An der Schlussveranstaltung vom 30. Juni 2017 wurden die wichtigsten Resultate einem breiteren Publi­kum vorgestellt und deren Stellenwert für die Weiterentwicklung nachhaltiger Produktions- und Er­nährungssysteme mit Akteuren aus Verwaltung, Politik und Markt beleuchtet und diskutiert.

Biodiversity at the farm scale: A novel credit point system Organic Eprints

Farmland biodiversity has often been assessed, but seldom at the farm scale, although it is ultimately the farm level at which decisions are taken. Therefore, a credit point system (CPS) was developed based on 32 options known to enhance farmland biodiversity. It was verified whether the resulting CPS score and farm-scale biodiversity are correlated considering four indicator groups (plants, grasshoppers, butterflies and birds) on 133 farms in the Swiss lowland. We further compared the suitability of the CPS score in reflecting farm-scale biodiversity to three alternative habitat measures, i.e. the amount of ecological compensation areas (ECAs, i.e. agri-environment scheme options), ECAs with a high ecological quality and valuable semi-natural elements...

Generic calibration of a simple model of diurnal temperature variations for spatial analysis of accumulated degree-days Organic Eprints

Accumulated growing degree-days (aGDD) are widely used to predict phenological stages of plants and insects. It has been shown in the past that the best predictive performance is obtained when aGDD are computed from hourly temperature data. As the latter are not always available, models of diurnal temperature changes are often employed to retrieve the required information from data of daily minimum and maximum temperatures. Organic farmers face the same potentially severe pest problems as their colleagues in integrated pest management (IPM) and conventional farming systems. Ein Grund für den anhaltenden Rückgang der Biodiversität in der Kulturlandschaft ist der Mangel an qualitativ wertvollen Biodiversitätsförderflächen (BFF). Sehr viele Landwirtschaftsbetriebe haben das Potenzial, die Qualität ihrer BFF zu erhöhen. Ein Ansatz, um dieses Potenzial zu nutzen, ist die gesamtbetriebliche Beratung, die nicht nur ökologische, sondern auch betriebswirtschaftliche Parameter berücksichtigt. Ein Vergleich zwischen beratenen und nicht beratenen Betrieben nach sechs Jahren zeigt, dass beratene Betriebe mehr und qualitativ wertvollere BFF anlegen und pflegen als die Vergleichsgruppe. Mit Vielfalt punkten – Bauern beleben die Natur - Jahresbericht 2015 Organic Eprints

Im Projekt «Mit Vielfalt punkten – Bauern beleben die Natur» (MVP) war das Jahr 2015 von Feldarbeiten geprägt. Zum letzten Mal wurden auf 47 Betrieben ökologische Daten erhoben. Es waren die gleichen Betriebe die schon 2009 und 2012 besucht wurden, und von denen die Hälfte im ersten Jahr ökologisch beraten wurde. Die Kontrolle und Verarbeitung der Felddaten zum Vorkommen von Pflanzen, Heuschrecken, Tagfaltern, Vögeln und Lebensräumen ist zurzeit im vollen Gange. Die Auswertungen im kommenden Jahr werden zeigen, ob sich die ökologische Beratung und die von den Landwirten in der Zwischenzeit umgesetzten Massnahmen messbar positiv auf die Biodiversität ausgewirkt haben. 2016 war das letzte Jahr im Projekt „Mit Vielfalt punkten“ (MVP). Der Höhepunkt war sicher die Publikation des Handbuches „Biodiversität auf dem Landwirtschaftsbetrieb“. Dieses Werk liefert Bauernfamilien und Beratenden verständliche und wertvolle Informationen zur Förderung der Biodiversität. Ein grosser Teil des Inhalts beruht auf Erfahrungen aus dem Projekt MVP. Das Handbuch fand in Presse und Öffentlichkeit eine grosse Beachtung. Die 8500 deutschen Bücher waren bald ausverkauft und eine zweite Auflage wurde gedruckt. Die Auswertungen derjenigen Betriebe, die 2009 eine gesamtbetriebliche Beratung erfahren haben, zeigt, dass die beratenen Betriebe heute deutlich mehr Biodiversitätsförderflächen (BFF) und vor allem mehr BFF der Qualitätsstufe II aufweisen...

Holistic approaches to pest management that aim at maximising self-regulation and resilience of orchards are a key goal in organic farming (see chapter 2). Pest management starts even before planting an orchard by site selection, orchard layout, planting systems (tree densities and pruning system), choice of cultivar and rootstock as well as cultivation techniques. Cultivation techniques and measures applied for disease control can also influence the dynamics of pest insects within orchards and need to be included in a holistic system view. Agricultural intensification leads to large-scale loss of habitats offering food and nesting sites for bees. This has resulted in a severe decline of wild bee diversity and abundance during the past decades. There is an urgent need for cost-effective conservation measures to mitigate this decline.
