Genetic structure and gene flow in French populations of two Ostrinia taxa: host races or sibling species? Inra
Malausa, T.; Dalecky, A.; Ponsard, S.; Audiot, P.; Streiff, R.; Chaval, Y.; Bourguet, D..
Most models of ecological speciation concern phytophagous insects in which speciation is thought to be driven by host shifts and subsequent adaptations of populations. Despite the ever-increasing number of studies, the current evolutionary status of most models remains incompletely resolved, as estimates of gene flow between taxa remain extremely rare. We studied the population genetics of two taxa of the Ostrinia genus — one feeding mainly on maize and the other on mugwort and hop — occurring in sympatry throughout France. The actual level of divergence of these taxa was unknown because the genetic structure of populations had been investigated over a limited geographical area and the magnitude of gene flow between populations had not been estimated. We...

Genetics of recent habitat contraction and reduction in population size: does isolation by distance matter? Inra
Leblois, R.; Estoup, A.; Streiff, R..
Fragmentation and loss of natural habitats are recognized as major threats to contemporary flora and fauna. Detecting past or current reductions in population size is therefore a major aim in conservation genetics. Statistical methods developed to this purpose have tended to ignore the effects of spatial population structure. However in many species, individual dispersal is restricted in space and fine-scale spatial structure such as isolation by distance (IBD) is commonly observed in continuous populations. Using a simulation-based approach, we investigated how comparative and single-point methods, traditionally used in a Wright-Fisher (WF) population context for detecting population size reduction, behave for IBD populations. We found that a complex...

Haldane's rule in Carabus : interspecific mating between C. punctatoauratus and C. splendens using experimental tests and molecular markers Inra
Brouat, C.; Meusnier, S.; Veyrier, R.; Streiff, R..
Carabus splendens Olivier and Carabus punctatoauratus Germar (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Carabini) are ground beetles found in sympatry in forests in the eastern Pyrénées. We investigated potential interspecific mating using crossing experiments under controlled laboratory conditions and paternity analyses based on microsatellite markers. We show that under laboratory conditions, interspecific mating produces viable and fertile offspring. Although hybrid males were sterile, females were fertile and thus reproductive isolation between the two species is far from complete. We discuss the results in relation to species integrity due to pre- or post-zygotic barriers, and compare them to a previous study quantifying hybridization between the two species in natural...

Modeling survival and mark loss in molting animals using capture, dead recoveries and exuvia recoveries Inra
Besnard, A.; Piry, S.; Berthier, K.; Lebreton, J.D.; Streiff, R..
Capture-mark-recapture (CMR) analyses aim primarily at estimating relevant life history parameters, despite the fact that some individuals are not always recaptured, even if alive on the study site. Applying such approaches to species with a complex life cycle, such as insects, remains challenging because each change of stage tends to cause mark loss through molting. We developed a multistate model based on three exclusive events ("dead,'' "surviving and molting,'' and "surviving and staying in the same larval stage'') to estimate probabilities of survival and mark loss. Estimates of biologically relevant parameters were derived from those of the probabilities of transition between these states. The model was applied to data from radio-tracking diodes...

Organisation spatiale de la diversité génétique et flux polliniques dans une chênaie mixte Inra
Streiff, R.; Ducousso, A.; Kremer, A..
