The aim of the CIPREA cruises (1978-1980) was the study of the equatorial upwelling in the Gulf of,Guinea. The objectives of the program were both, physical and biological. The physical objective consisted in a description of the processes of the equatorial sea surface cooling and nutrient enrichment in summer. The biological objective was the assessment of the planktonic production in the equatorial upwelling. Each of these objectives required different means : deep moorings equipped with current meters and thermistance chains for the first one, transects and long-duration stations for the second one.
