Irrigated paddy fields are the rice growing areas having high yield potential. Two significant factors enhancing high yield are the well-adapted variety and appropriate management. PSL05101-93-1-32 is a promising rice line derived from the 3-way cross of PSL00508-3-1-1-4/IR66738-118-1-2//IR67966-188-2-2-1 in 2005. It has as high yield potential as 965 kg/rai (6.03 t/ha). The average grain yield is 730 kg/rai, greater than PSL2, CNT1 and RD47 varieties by 14, 13 and 7%, respectively. The maturity is 115 days after sowing by transplanting method. Plant height is 83-90 cm. This promising line is a non-glutinous long grain rice having straw-color husk. The paddy rice seed dimension is 10.4×2.61×2.10 mm in width × length × thickness, respectively. The paddy...

In wet season, rainfed area in Lower Northern of Thailand has has an abundance of soil and water availability which is suitable for growing a photoperiod-sensitive rice with high yield potential. However, favorite rice varieties often have low yield and are susceptible to rice pests. Breeding for high yield and resistance to disease and insect pests while maintaining good eating quality is, therefore, the major approaches in changing rice varieties for good qualities, increased yield and adequate consumption. A promising lines, PSL97060-17-CNT-1-2-1, was obtained from three-way cross between KLG88028-22-1-2-2 and F1 of SPR88096-17-3-2-2 and IR60 at Phitsanulok Rice Research Center. Selection in F4-F6 was subsequently conducted at Chai Nat Rice Research...

Recently, the outbreak of brown planthopper in irrigated paddy fields in the lower northern region was found frequently due to continuous rice growing resulting in low yield of rice production. RD49 is a non–glutinous rice which is insensitive to photoperiod. This line was obtained from 3–way cross, PSL00508-3-1-1-4 /IR66738-118-1-2//IR68544-29-2-1-3-1-2. The average yield is 733 kg/rai which is 26, 15 and 6% greater than those of Chai Nat 1, Phitsanulok 2 and RD47, respectively whereas the maximum yield potential reaches 939 kg/rai. The plant type shows moderately strong culm with about 95 cm height, 102-107 days to maturity for seed broadcasting and 116 days for transplanting. The line is moderately resistant to brown planthopper and resistant to rice...

The brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) has been a major pest in irrigated rice growing areas of central and lower northern region since 1975. The monitoring of population density is very important for forecasting the BPH outbreak. Light trap, an effective tool for monitoring the outbreaks of BPH was conducted in hot spot areas. A light trap was set in Khlong Luang Rice Research Center while surveying in farmers’ fields in hot spot areas of BPH outbreak in Bangkok and Nonthaburi province were investigated during January 2011 to November 2012. The number of BPH caught from light trap was counted everyday throughout the year. The results showed that light trap could collect big number of BPH. The peak of BPH in light trap was in March of each...

Brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), is a major insect pest of rice in Thailand. Because of their ability to adapt to host plant and environment, the BPH becomes an extremely destructive pest and difficult to control. The purpose of this research is to monitor the insecticide resistance of BPH in North Eastern (NE) Thailand. The BPH populations were collected from the outbreak areas in 9 provinces during 2011 to 2012. The toxicity (LD50) of 10 insecticides was conducted using Topical bioassay method. Results showed that the BPH populations from 7 provinces were resistant to ethiprole and isoprocarb. The Nong Bua Lam Phu population was the widest spectrum of resistance to the tested insecticides, whereas, the BPH population from Si Sa Ket was...

Efficacy test of pericarps of soapberry (Sapindus emarginatus Wall) to control golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata Lamarck) was conducted in 2 x 5 meter rice field plots at Prachin Buri Rice Research Center in 2013. RCB design was used in this experiment. Five plots were treated with suspension of pericarps of soapberry at rates 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 kg/rai and compared with other two plots which one treated with suspension of tea seed cake (3 kg/rai; control 1) and another was untreated (control 2). In each plot contained 30 different sizes of snails. The results showed that in 48 hours after treated with soapberry and tea seed cake, the percentage mortality of golden apple snails were more than 50 and significantly different to untreated plot. In 15 days...

(Mirid bug , Cyrtorhinus lividipennis Reuter) Thai Agricultural
Sukanya Arunmit; Wantana Sriratanasak; Jintana Chaiwong.
Brown planthopper (BPH) is a major insect pest of irrigated rice cultivation areas in lower north, central and northeast Thailand. The field experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of nine insecticides to control BPH in farmers’ fields at Suphan Buri, Nakhonayok and Ubon Ratchathani provinces. The results showed that the sulfoxaflor 50 % WG and pymetrozine 50 % WG were the most effective insecticides. The ratios of BPH/mirid bug (MB) in the buprofezin and pymetrozine fields were lower than other fields, which may indicate the less toxicity to MB compared with other insecticides. Moreover, toxicity of each insecticide to MB was investigated using a leaf dipping method and the result indicated that pymetrozine 50 % WG was the lowest toxicity to...
