A full belly and colostrum: two major determinants of filial love Animal Physiology

The establishment of filial bonding in sheep relies on the success of the first suckling bouts. Previous work has shown that colostrum ingestion facilitates the development of a preference for the mother. We conducted a series of experiments to investigate the influence of quantitative and qualitative factors linked to fluid ingestion. The first experiment demonstrated that the procedure was not detrimental to the mother-young interaction and did not cause any harm to the lamb. In a second experiment, lambs could interact with their dam but were deprived of suckling during the first 12h after birth (the udder was covered) and fed via a nasogastric tube in the presence of their mother on seven occasions. A new tool for induced spawning : the use of 17alpha-hydroxy-20beta-dihydroprogesterone to spawn carp at low temperature Animal Physiology

The efficiency of different hormonal treatments to induce ovulation of carp at low temperatures (13-15°C) was tested. "Priming" with a low dose (0.6 mg/kg) of carp pituitary extract was found necessary for a subsequent successful treatment with 17alpha-hydroxy-20beta-dihydroprogesterone (17alpha-20beta P) (2 mg/kg) 1 day later. The eggs produced by this method showed satisfactory fertilization (75-96%) and hatching success (70%). On the other hand, normal hypophysation (5.4 mg/kg) following priming resulted only in partial ovulation and oocyte resorption at this temperature. Priming was shown to increase the gonadotropin level in plasma from about 2 to 35 ng/ml and to induce germinal vesicle migration toward the periphery...

A NLRR-1 gene is expressed in migrating slow muscle cells of the trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) embryo Animal Physiology

NLRR-l (neuronal leucine-rich repeat-l) is a transmembrane protein that functions as a cell adhesion molecule regulating morphogenesis. Previous study in the mouse reported that somitic expression of NLRR-1 is restricted to the dorsal lip of the dermomyotome that gives rise to the epaxial muscle. Here we report the expression of a NLRR-1 gene in the trout developing somite. Whole mount in situ hybridisation showed that NLRR-l transcript accumulated in a rostro-caudal wave in the adaxial slow muscle cells that are initially found deep in the somite, immediately adjacent to the notochord. A study of salmon (Oncorhynchus tschawytscha) pituitary gonadotropin dissociation Animal Physiology

Urea (8 M) treatment of salmon gonadotropin results in the dissociation of the hormone into two subunits. These subunits were separated using DEAE-cellulose chromatography and gel filtration on Ultrogel ACA 54, and studied for their molecular weights, electrophoretic, biological, and immunological properties. Molecular weights of the alpha and beta subunits were, respectively, 12,500 and 17,000 as determined by gel filtration and sodium dodecyl sulfate-gel electrophoresis. In anionic polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, 7.5%, the alpha subunit, migrated more rapidly (Rf = 0.67) than the native hormone s-GtH (Rf = 0.38), and the beta subunit did not migrate. La 17 alpha hydroxy-20 beta dihydroprogestérone injectée (2 mg/kg) à des femelles dont les ovocytes sont au stade de la « vésicule germinative semi-périphérique » permet d'obtenir un groupement des ovulations entre 5 et 9 jours après le traitement. La 17alpha-hydroxy-20 beta-dihydroprogestérone (pregn-4-ene-17 alpha, 20 beta-diol-3-one) induit la maturation in vitro d'ovocytes de truites arc-en-ciel, Salmo gairdnerii, entourés de leur follicule. Avec 97 % de maturations vitellines à la concentration de 22 ng/ml, il représente le stéroïde le plus efficace éprouvé jusqu'à présent. « Progestagène » connu chez les salmonidés, son rôle physiologique possible est discuté.

Des extraits hypothalamiques de Carpe ou de Truite stimulent la sécrétion in vitro de LH par des hypophyses de Bélier. lnversement des extraits hypothalamiques de Bélier stimulent la sécrétion de c-HG par des hypophyses de Carpe. Ce résultat permet d'étendre aux Poissons la non spécificité des hormones hypothalamiques gonadotropes déjà montrée in vivo et in vitro à l'intérieur de la classe des Mammifères, et entre les Mammifères et les Oiseaux.

We investigated if absolute (nocturnal) or relative (ratio nocturnal/diurnal) plasma melatonin concentrations were associated with the seasonal ovulatory activity in Ile-de-France ewes. Ninety-six and 121 ewes in two different groups of the same flock were used to determine the potential existence of a relationship between melatonin concentrations at the summer and winter solstices, and the dates of onset and offset of the ovulatory activity, respectively. Analysis of an Hertwig effect in the rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri Richardson) after fertilization with gamma-irradiated sperm Animal Physiology

In this work, we tried to optimize gamma-treatment of sperm to obtain large numbers of haploid gynogenetic embryos after fertilization. The analysis of increasing doses showed a typical Hertwig effect in all cases, but we found wide between-male variations in the most efficient dose. This variability was reduced by mixing several irradiated samples collected from different males or given different efficient doses. Androgen and estrogen treatments alter steady state messengers RNA (mRNA) levels of testicular steroidogenic enzymes in the rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss Animal Physiology

Recent investigations have shown that estrogens have profound inhibitory effects on steroidogenic enzyme gene expressions before and after testicular differentiation in the rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. This present study bring new data on juvenile rainbow trout treated with estrogens and androgens. Following a 8 days oral treatment of juvenile male with 17-ethynyl-estradiol (EE2, 20 mg/kg diet) or 11-hydroxyandrostenedione (11OH4, 10 mg/kg diet), we observed a fast and marked decrease of steady-state mRNA levels for 3HSD, P450scc, P450c17, and P450c11 enzymes in the testis. Les possibilités d'un contrôle de la reproduction des poissons sont basées sur une bonne connaissance de la gamétogenèse, de son contrôle endocrinien et de son déroulement au cours du cycle reproducteur annuel. On examinera le rôle clé joué par le complexe hypothalamo-hypophysaire qui intègre les facteurs de l'environnement et répond en élaborant et sécrétant une ou plusieurs hormones impliquées dans le développement des gonades. Ces dernières vont, grâce à la sécrétion de stéroïdes sexuels, solliciter d'autres organes comme le foie, et mobiliser des réserves corporelles pour les intégrer sous forme de vitellus dans les ovocytes.
